5.0 classic | Hewitt | January 1st 08 | Sing the Sorrow was a turning point for AFI. It still bears faint traces of their past punk and hardcore roots, but fused with a new direction containing more rock and pop influences. This CD has a lot of variety going on. From the dark, anthemic opener, to the punk verses of Dancing Through Sunday and its more poppy choruses. To the short electronic passage in Death Of Seasons to the backing choirs of ...but home is nowhere. Sing the Sorrow has a little something for everyone. Vocally and lyrically it's a big progression for the band, using elements of their past and fusing them with a newfound direction.

3.5 great | Damrod EMERITUS | June 21st 06 | "Sing the Sorrow" was the first album I got to know by AFI, and so far it's my favorite. What I really like about this album is the combination of Punk like tones combined with an epic aspect. That comes from the multi-voice choruses, string arrangements and similar aspects of the music. The musical work is quite solid, though not overly extraordinary. What makes it good is how all the instruments work together to set the mood of the songs.
What keeps me from giving this a higher rating is that I sometimes feel the songs sound too much the same. It might be epic, but at the core it's still inspired by more simple Punk like music. Here and there riffs and structures seem recycled, which spoils the relistening value for me to an extend.
Still, a very good 3.5 ot of 5 from me.Fun to listen to, though not all day and night long

5.0 classic | indietrash | September 18th 07 | "Sing the Sorrow" is ridiculously good. There's not a single song on this album that qualifies to being a «bad» song. The guitars are cutting the bass is driving; the drums are flowing; the vocals are intense; all is well. The energy found on "Sing the Sorrow" is pure magic. And they actually maintain the high level throughout all 14 tracks (fifteen or sixteen songs, depending on if you count the spoken word as its own song). Fantastic stuff. But what impresses me the most is that whenever I put this album on, I'm just as impressed as I was the last time I did so - or even more. This is a gem that will forever be one of my favourite albums. This is a classic.

5.0 classic | Honeymoon_Croon | August 6th 06 | Ahhhh.... AFI. A band most of my friends hate. Maybe it's because they think Davey sounds like he's wearing a testicle clamp. Or maybe they think that AFI is wrist-cutty music. Those friends are wrong. While the lyrics maybe melancholy, they are beautiful at the same time. The muscianship definitely kicks arse. Both Leaving Songs are great, as well as Silver And Cold and ....But Home is Nowhere (which was a great choice for a closer).

5.0 classic | ilikemusicthatsucks | May 6th 08 | I can agree with the many others here who say this album changed their life. Before this album, I had been on a steady diet of classic rock only. Coming out of my Linkin-Park-and-Limp-Bizkit-listening preteens, I had decided "today's music sucks". I started slowly getting into modern rock again when I saw these guys on tv. Then I heard this album and I started to change my mind. The intro absolutely amazed me. Even now, every time I listen to this album I notice something new that just astonishes me. An underrated classic.

5.0 classic | alliefilth | October 15th 07 | I gave AFI's "Sing the Sorrow" a perfect score because I believe that this is their best album yet. Every song is perfect and I wouldn't change any of them. This is the first album I ever heard of AFI's as well.

0.0 | NOTINTHEFACE | January 19th 07 | This is the definitive AFI album. This is also THE definitive album. Nothing I have heard before or since has moved me to the degree that Sing the Sorrow has. Everything on this album is perfect, from the chilling intro to the atmospheric hidden track "This Time Imperfect" (arguably AFI's best song). My favorite album ever.

5.0 classic | letitbebroke | October 22nd 06 | I see 'Sing the Sorrow' as the best album made by AFI to date. Thuogh Decemberunderground has its moments it would be very hard for AFI to further 'Sing the Sorrow'. Every song on the album has a meaning and is portraying Davey's emotions with precision. I feel that in 'sing thee Sorrow' the band has worked on their musical technique and also perfected it, in many ways the album has more complicated riffs compared to their previous albums showing the continual progress they are making. Afi have made their own syle come alive and there is no band alive that comes close to the style AFI have erected for themselves. This is a must have album, showing the peak of A Fire Inside.

4.5 superb | ChuppaC | September 19th 20 | I consider myself lucky to have listened to this, my first AFI album, without any knowledge of their punk roots, allowing me to enjoy this album simply for what it is: beautifully written goth poetry set to music.

4.0 excellent | c0nf1n3d | October 30th 18 | "Sing the Sorrow" thrives off of the singles, and (mostly) still manages to be good even in its other tracks. Lead single "Girls Not Grey", to this day (written in 2018), is a ridiculously catchy song with an exceptional bridge. "Leaving Song", parts 1 and 2, are both contrasting yet manage to be more winners in this album. "...but home is nowhere", while not a single, is a weird closing track that oddly is effective in how it spaces out the (essentially) 2 songs with unique/cool sound mixing in between. The real standout among all of these though is "Silver and Cold". It's the catchiest song the band has written to this day, and in some ways...almost 'chilling' too in its lyrical content and songwriting.
Bump |
1.5 very poor | EasterInTheBatcave | February 5th 17 | Some catchy choruses ("Silver and Cold," "Girl's Not Grey"), but I can't totally get into this record. I'm clamoring for more instrumental excitement, and I'm not big on these screams. The dark atmosphere is effective, though, and I like the unexpected touches (the end of "Death of Seasons").

4.0 excellent | Jared Floryan | February 28th 15 | A brief summary of AFI's sixth full-length album Sing the Sorrow: the amount of positive reception it got at the time of its release up to now is no joke. Personally, I wouldn't dare say it's the band's #1 recording. True, the group had issued a darker and arguably mature album which leaned more towards alternative rock and post-hardcore than it did AFI's punk roots, though what I definitely adored about Sing the Sorrow's predecessor The Art of Drowning is somewhat missing here. However, this is far from a bad offering and features very nostalgic songs in "Silver and Cold" as well as "Girl's Not Grey". The songwriting is mostly in tip-top shape, but there are those rare moments when this album's sophisticated feel (compared to earlier efforts, of course) feels kinda phoned in; "Dancing Through Sunday" - while on its own a great tune - is pretty forced because AFI are trying a bit too hard via recalling their earlier years, which showed us a different, inexperienced (disposition-wise) band. Let's just say that, at the very end of the day where paper airplanes suddenly took over our universe, Sing the Sorrow will make both teenage girls and boys and even a fine smorgasbord of purists jizz themselves.

4.5 superb | SlowlyFallingAwake | April 9th 13 | Great sing-along album and definitely the best effort AFI's pulled out so far. For me, anything beyond this album went downhill.
Bump |
4.5 superb | Quaid | September 5th 12 | For me at least, Sing the Sorrow combined AFI's previous hardcore/punk exploits with a new poppy direction perfectly. It's a shame they couldn't get that balance afterwards.
Bump |
5.0 classic | JackSparrow | August 27th 12 | In my top 3 favorite albums, every song on this album is perfect. From the dark, synth intro to the gang chants in The Leaving Song Pt II through the sheer beauty that is This Time Imperfect, this album is flawless.
Bump |
4.5 superb | Activista anti-MTV | February 10th 12 | A polished effort from a band that has demonstrated superlative abilities. AFI is definitely the cream of whatever crop they are currently in. This LP represents a break from their previous efforts in that they are less hardcore/punk and more rock oriented. AFI is continually growing in new and different directions as they progress as a band and as individuals. Very happy to have had the privilege of listening to this band over the years.
Bump |
4.5 superb | WhiteTieBlackJacket | March 9th 11 | Sing the Sorrow is the stuff of legend. You will be hard pressed to find a higher-minded combination of well devised lyrics, guitar work that makes each song an individual, and a vocal delivery which ranges from punk screaming to harmonious singing. The group vocals assisted by the Despair Faction only help. Plus, this record has Death of Seasons. Sick.
Bump |
4.5 superb | promiseswept | February 10th 11 | This Celluloid Dream, Girl's Not Grey, and The Leaving Song Part 2 are my favorites on this CD. It's pretty much AFI at their finest: not too punk or scream laden, and before they were mainstream. Classic listen
Bump |
4.5 superb | AtavanHalen | January 16th 11 | Something about albums that take the middle ground between where a band came from and where they were headed, mixing the best aspects of both, seem to do it for me the most. It would definitely explain why Rubber Soul is my favourite Beatles - and, indeed, why I love Sing the Sorrow so much. A dazzling, dark spectacle, AFI's shining moment brings their punk rock roots into a melodic progression. From the churning melodrama of "The Leaving Song Part 2" to the fist-pumping "Bleed Black" and beyond, Sing the Sorrow ultimately encompasses everything that makes A Fire Inside worth listening to.

5.0 classic | CutMan | July 30th 10 | Out of nowhere, not only a new sound, but one they had mastered immediately. They haven't topped it since, and that's okay, because albums like this don't just happen all the time. Dark, emotional, cohesive, and filled with great songs, this album will always be remembered by me, and I suspect many, many others.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | Xenorazr | May 30th 10 | AFI tackle a change in styles with Sing the Sorrow, which manages to be a surprising solid album with its fair share of stronger moments. While it might be easy to dismiss the group for their attire and cliche imagery (especially with their two most recent albums), what can't be denied is how catchy some of the songs get and that there is some decent to good musicianship to find here.

4.5 superb | actappalled696 | September 18th 09 | Such amazing hodgepodge of genres - this album is made to seem like a classic by many and garbage by many others. I'd have to side with the more pessimistic view - while taking a journey from their punk roots to a more emotional, aesthetic realm of rock music, they kept me as a diehard fan.

I like this direction they went in - with the exception of the singles, this album is perfect. I can listen start to finish almost. Death of Seasons and Paper Airplanes are amazing. These lyrics touch me and the music is very catchy.

4.5 superb | greyeffect | May 31st 07 | Solid album, such a step forward from The Art Of Drowning. Excellent drumming, guitar work, vocals and bass. The only weakness in my opinion is the often repetitive nature of the album. Never the less it's a fantastic album.

0.0 | La Revolucion | March 24th 07 | AFI changed their sound rather drastically for this album, going from the simpler punk of their previous work to a new, better-produced and more fleshed-out style of songwriting. Thankfully, the result is excellent. Every single song stands out as a possible hit single, with no exceptions. "Girl's Not Grey" takes the cake as hit-singliest, however, and what do you know? It was, and gave AFI some much needed mainstream attention.

4.0 excellent | clairvoyant | January 22nd 07 | This album took a long time for me to digest. When I first purchased the album I was ready to see something along the lines of Black Sails in the Sunset and The Art of Drowning, obviously, but I was extremely disappointed. I found emo, and some very depressing music.
Eventually, however, I began to enjoy it, the musicianship on this album is very good. Although some songs are tiresome, there are a lot of classics such as Silver and Cold, Dancing Through Sunday, and Paper Airplanes.

4.5 superb | bdizfoshiz | November 14th 06 | This is AFI's best album, no question. It's so much more well-rounded musically than any of their stuff that came before it, and with Decemberunderground they prettymuch killed themselves, but anyway... great album. One of the most musically flawless albums I've heard.
