Great debut by one of the most important bands of progressive metal the last 10 years."Celestial Elixir" is not only a great ending to the album, but one of my favorite songs of all time. "Streams", "Sun" and the title track are also great songs and one of their best songs!

Let's talk a bit about p r o g. While some stans praise its artists' dexterity and composition skills, some stooges blatantly criticize it for how soulless and wanky it is. Spoiler: it's a bit of both, and Haken's first album is a good case study. The musicians are all extremely talented, the soundscape is wide and incorporates elements of Eastern and symphonic music, nods to the 70s prog greats, and ofc Dream Theater's iconic sound. On the other hand, it doesn't do much to me. Regardless of the quite cheesy vocals - a minor complaint per se, all prog clean vocals are cheesy - it sometimes sounds empty to me. I know, that's a paradox given how much is going on. Yet, I don't headbang although it's a metal record. I don't get lost into the epic music although the long instrumental passages are specifically meant for that. Will have to jam some more modern prog to see if this sentiment holds up.

An album that shows so much potential, but is unfortunately way too bloated. The opener, Streams and Closer (especially) showcase Haken?s amazing talent in cramming loads of ideas into one track succesfulky. The other tracks however are mostly filler-feeling ballads etc. There is no doubt that these guys can both write and play, they just need to focus it a bit more.

Aquarius is the debut album of the progressive metal band Haken. Its lengthy compositions tackle the concept of a mermaid sold into circus servitude only to later die a martyr in the cause against global warming. There is clear influence of Portnoy era Dream Theater with the musical tones and texture yet the vocals delivered by Ross Jennings are far more operatic rock by nature. Clocking past 70 minutes is quite ambitious and may appear a bit demanding to a new audience however progressive rock fans will appreciate this unique ride.
