Technically, every Sabbath album having Dio means instant excellency. Not as stunning as Heaven and Hell, but behind the bloody and brutal artwork there is yet another very memorable heavy metal-doom record.

The riffs are absolute monsters, songs are like a perfect combination of Sabbath and DIO. Mob Rules riff is one of the best riffs of 1980s. Turn Up the Night is a classic opener and almost like Iron Maiden or Thin Lizzy.

Yes Mob Rules is better than Vol. 4. There I said it. That being said however, it's almost as good as Heaven And Hell in most aspects, retains most of that album's highlight qualities, sports some excellent tunes, and sports heavier production values, but the freshness of H&H is sadly missing. "Turn Up The Night" is a fine opener if in the vein of "Neon Nights" in structure and familiarity, and some of these tunes are a bit similar to H&H's tracklist to a slight fault. That being said, "The Sign of The Southern Cross" is another masterwork for the band, enveloped by the doom that defined Sabbath's earlier works while Ronnie James Dio's vocals pour out with a sense of passion that most singers could dream of having. Despite lacking the charisma of H&H, Mob Rules is an excellent followup not lacking in the elements that made the preceeding album so great, and it stands out in their catalog as one of their finest.

It makes sense that Dio left for a solo effort after this album, as it is the first time that Sabbath's instrumentals are overshadowed by the vocals. That's not to say that the same great Sabbath riffs are absent, as they are still there; however, some of them seem to stagnate a bit given they take a backseat. Mind you, this stagnation is only on a couple of songs, meaning it is still a great album.

A truly underrated effort with the Black Sabbath name on it. I could argue that this is my favorite Sabbath album. Dio shows that he is much more powerful vocalist than Ozzy and Tony Iommi totally kicks it into high gear with this album. I had the title track on infinite loop as a kid; I could'nt get enough of that song. IF YOU LISTEN TO FOOLS, THE MOB RULES.

Even though Mob Rules stood no chance of topping the likes of Master of Reality or Paranoid, it's still a very good record, and the best of the classic Dio Era. Even though the album does have a filler track, the rest is highly inspired, even more so than Heaven & Hell. For one, Appice does a fine job on drums; also, Iommi's guitar work easily tops that on the previous record. It's easy to see why Dio left though: he had no business staying with a band that had pretty much released it's last truly great album.

Another lineup change, Appice replaces Ward. While this loss is felt, Iommi, Butler and Dio craft amazing songs. Where Heaven and Hell had more of a classic rock vibe, this record is heavier and much darker.

The previous is slightly better however Mob Rules still an amazing record. All songs are very cool but my favourites are Turn Up the Night, Voodoo, The Sign of the Southern Cross, Falling Off the Edge of the World and specially The Mob Rules. This last song has a great solo from Mr. Tony Iommi.
