Almost everybody's going to anoint Kanye's MBDTF or Big Boi's first solo as the best hip-hop record of the year. I'm going to anoint this as the best hip-hop record of last year discovered this year.

Considering that this is the first record from the 18-year-old Tyler The Creator (founder of LA rap crew Odd Future), and that he composed the beats, lyrics and music virtually by himself, you have to hand it to the kid. Bastard could easily pass as a veteran's record with the hard-as-fuck lyrical content and ridiculous flows coming out of Tyler's mouth. From the opening title track all the way to "Inglorious", Bastard is a high-energy, passionate record replete with fantastic wordplay, production and beats that seems to mesh the free-association of Ghostface's Supreme Clientele, Lil' B and e-40 with the horror/shock rap of the 90's like Necro, Cage, and Kool Keith, with some evil Neptunes synths/keys on top of that. With all of that, there's a surprising vulnerability underneath it all, with constant mentions to Tyler's deadbeat father, family problems, etc. - there's some REALLY heavy shit on this record (think DMX's "X Is Coming" only turned up to 15 on the "That's Fucked Up!" Scale). If there was a paternal-minded counterpart to Marshall Mathers LP, Bastard is probably the closest to it. VCR/Wheels, AssMilk, Jack And The Beanstalk, Blow, Seven, Bastard, French!, and Slow It Down are all some of the best hip-hop tracks of 2010 without doubt (yeah it came out X-Mas 2009, whatever). Go to oddfuture.com and download this for free right now, and watch for amazing things to come in the near, odd future. A few hairs short of a modern classic.

Bastard is Tyler the Creator's debut mixtape. Bastard, in my opinion, has a pretty cool concept where Tyler talks to his therapist and guidance counselor, Dr. T.C. Tyler's lyrics were dark and horrific, yet funny and satisfying. His flow and delivery were pretty good and I loved the production. Bastard really shows Tyler, the Creator's potential as an artist. But Tyler could definitely improve on some areas and I felt like he relied too much on shock value. But I really like the chemistry between Earl and Tyler on this album and I feel like they compliment each other well. Bastard is probably Tyler's edgiest release and is one of the best rap projects of 2009. Bastard is a great mixtape with good lyrics and lots of shock value I highly recommend this mixtape.

This album is, without a doubt, Tyler's most consistent and overall best album he's put out so far. His lyrics are personal without sacrificing wordplay, and the sinister production on this thing is excellent. He lays it all out for you in the form of a therapy session, and is unapologetic about everything he has to say. Granted, it may get a little drawn out towards the end, and thus, loses a bit of steam, but the album is consistent in what it does, which is draw out Tyler's life as it is: Depressing, funny, strange, and eventful.

Too many highs and lows. I love Tyler for his creative and smart rapping but when the album gets to Slow it Down and the other more RnB influenced shit I get to pressing the next song button. I want my Ace the Creator raw and unrefined. Still a good one overall. The OFWGKTA collab album is better IMO.
