I actually thought this guy had potential, as he has a half decent voice and I liked that he was doing something a little different in mainstream pop. Took the time to listen to this, and my opinion rapidly changed on him.
He has no variation in his vocals at all, every song sounds very similar and as for the lyrics? Hands down, he is the worst lyricist around today. Also, having to hear "Grenade" and "The Lazy Song" pretty much every time I have to listen to the radio makes me want to rip my ears off.
Tyler, The Creator, you know what to do.

Bland shit. Although his 2016 24K Magic mainly was Bruno taking what the funk greats had already done with 2010s pop appeal, this first album just rehashes tropes and sounds used by 2000s mainstream female pop. Maybe that's just a question of taste, but whereas 24KM was a mindless but fun record, this one is mindless and it ain't fun. No passion, no technique. 1.6

I don't consider Bruno Mars an untalented musical artist, but it really fails to show through his music. He can sing, but most of the time he sounds like he's pushing too hard to be in a range he shouldn't be in.

It's become common for artists today in the charts to release single after single where the sound of each is indistinguishable and there is little variation to them. This is true of Bruno Mars. The guy has some potential and has proven that he can write a song (he co-wrote Cee Lo Green's Fuck You) however this is a truly unlistenable album with derivative and soppy songs that would make even true romantics squirm at the sheer awfulness of the lyrics ("Is it the look in your eyes, or is it this dancing juice?"). As somebody who's a total hipster when it comes to music, I listened to this album with an open mind and I regret it completely.

This is a pathetic effort from a man that could have actually gone somewhere. His voice is not so much unique but certainly distinctive and interesting but the album is marred by awful and downright lazy songwriting. Some of the staples of the album include God awful lyrics.
However, Grenade is a simple and catchy tune that people seem to take too literally but the real highlight is Just The Way You Are - an uplifting and anthemic ballad. But the rest is jam-packed with filler and or worse such as the Lazy Song, which could have more accurately been as utter trash.

"The Other Side" is the album's main highlight but it can not save this album from total atrocities like "The Lazy Song" and "Just the Way You Are." Some other songs are mediocre, all of it lacks any attempt at originality

A few of the songs are catchy as all get-out, but overall, the songwriting is rather cliche. Worst of all, "Grenade" may be one of the dumbest songs ever written, and it's frustrating that it gets stuck in the head so easily. Under what scenario would he ever have to catch a grenade for someone? Are he and his girlfriend at war? Sorry, Bruno... Maybe she won't die for you, too, because she's worried you're insane.
