SikTh came out of my local scene not so long ago, so seeing this album become so acclaimed was a great thing, personally, for a lot of people I know. So there is a temptation to over-rate this slightly, inspiring as it was to hear that songs as good as "Scent Of The Obscene" and "Skies of Millenium Night" could be made in my surroundings. Yet, there are a couple of true clunkers here; "Can't We All Dream" might be the single worst song I own. So, it's an inconsistent record, and it occasionally falls fowl of its own ambition. It's still thrilling, though. The two aforementioned tracks, "Peep Show", the two "Emerson" interludes, and the Nick Cave cover "Tupelo" are all stellar tracks, brimming with energy and invention. Their ambition might hold them back, but as Death Of A Dead Day revealed, it's also their strength, which is what makes this unrestrained recording the finest SikTh release yet. Interesting fact: one of the members of SikTh is currently living with a girl I know. She's a major Shins fan. The plot thickens.

as the first sikTh album i dived into, right off the bat, i noticed the gorgeous dual vocals. if those weren't enough to give this album atleast a 3, the transitions, structures and instrumentation are tightened up to perfection. it's a fast-paced, aggressive record that catches your attention over and over again as the energy changes from ruthless, to triumphant, to anguished. the tiny details like the spoken word, and odd moments that aren't typical to a metal album are fantastic and add so much to the listening experience. the only regret on this album is when it takes that impressive musicianship for a loop of wankery and ends up sounding like cheesy power metal every now and then.

Now why couldn't PtH take a hint from these guys and DEP and make good music? This album is just about on-par with Death of a Dead Day and which one is better is honestly up to personal taste. Definitely one of the better math-core bands out there even if the vocals get a bit grating every so often. 4.1/5

Heavy, intense and strange really sum up this album - the weirdness doesn't detract from how awesome it is though, and songs like topelo keep me coming back to this album again and again. first 5 songs are ridiculously catchy too

A tad bit more offensive and in-your-face than the astounding "Death of a Dead Day" but a little less focused and simply to extreme at some points. While being inferior to Death of a Dead Day, this album is still pretty damn awesome in it's own right.
