Volume One of Teargarden, entitled Songs for a Sailor, starts off a little shaky for me. While I appreciate the piano intro on “Song for a Son” and how reminiscent it is of Mellon Collie, it soon shows that Corgan is exploring a strange new direction with organs, synthesizers and seventies psychadelia. His research into the phases of the Tarot is also a little different as a theme for the music and comes off a bit soft, despite a few killer guitar solos intermixed through the EP. “Widow Wake My Mind” is a bit dull and then “Stitch in Time” gets all retro with a sitar and some dreamy-pop vibes flowing through it.
