73 minutes of stunningly beautiful compositions, vocals and production. 'Iconoclasts' sees Hausswolff maximizing the efforts of herself vocally and the many musicians put to task to bring 'Iconoclasts' to life creating songs that are at times epic and loud but also have moments of mystery, sombre and melancholy. It is hard to even choose a place to begin with the dense instrumentation and harmony created on this record. Some moments that exemplify this: the duet in 'The Whole Woman' which sees Anna and Iggy harmonizing over beautiful string sections and guitars, 'Facing Atlas' which pairs Anna's church organ with loud vocals and mixed percussion, and 'Stardust' which provides a nice upbeat track that gets great use out of sax, woodwinds, synth and provides some of the best vocal work on the record. And then there is 'The Iconoclast', a true masterpiece which encapsulates everything AVH is capable of as a songwriter and a performer. This music sounds sublime on these recordings but I can only imagine how magnificent this body of work would be in a live environment. Hopefully that can come to life somewhere, someday.
