Cool experimental half live, half studio cuts album from KC. Good performances from Bruford and Fripp, but poor lyrics from Wetton. Overall, it's not on par of what this itteration of KC is capable of (i.e. Larks' Tongues.. and Red) but is still great nonetheless

Plain old boring. Robert Fripp's improvisational album falls short due to no structure to be whatsoever, and nothing even remotely catchy in the album. The mindless improvised sessions go nowhere, build no momentum and have no resolve. Anyone looking to pick up some King Crimson albums should skip this one and get Lark's and Red instead.

My shared favourite KC album so far. This one again takes the jazz influences up a notch being full on improv, but has a lot of the heavier rock edge. The 2nd and 3rd to last tracks are a bit meh, but the amazing closer saves the 3.5.

Improvisational jazz prominently resides in Starless and Bible Black, featuring the musicianship talent of King Crimson. Aside from The Great Deceiver and Lament, the tracks were recorded in live performance. The more appreciative moments of this record are its quieter moments, often involving a single instrument, patiently building up to a crescendo with accompaniment at the appropriate moment to great effect. Trio accomplishes this perfectly. Admittedly the album is not immediate or accessible by its nature and demands concentration from the listener. Not unlike learning a second language, once locked in, a new world opens: ruled by the Crimson King.

It's not that this and Lark are taking the magic of Red for me, but I can definitely see the same features perfected there (both closers f.e.) and glued to a more interestingly challenging songwriting and emotional delivery...I guess that's why I fived Red...

The improvised instrumentals might seem boring and overindulgent at first listen, but the beautiful Trio and the slithering The Mincer are completely improvised and are still amazing. This lineup was full of improv masters. For that reason, I would almost give this a 4.5. Even though I'm not, every second of this album is worth at least a couple listens, especially The Great Deceiver and The Night Watch.

Some of the most bizarre music I've ever heard, but at the same time, it's daring, chaotic, engaging, trippy, and captivating. King Crimson take you to another dimension, simple as that. It would be a crime to describe them simply as a progressive act. They're in a category of their own league.
