0.0 | bloc | April 9th 10 | Probably one of the most hyped up releases of the year so far, and Periphery's self titled is well deserving of it. I must admit that I was unimpressed with the opening tracks, particularly the first two; they consisted of the usual chugs and polyrhythms while the vocals were totally average (ie. they were not demonstrating their potential). However, once I entered the middle portion of the album, I knew I was listening to some very special songs. Not only was there more variation in the music (leads and solos) but the vocalist really started to show his range, holding out long notes full of passion and sizzle. As if three guitarists wasn't enough, the album is packed with atmospheric pads in the background plus a few bits of drum programming, which really bring out that Animals as Leaders type of vibe. Another highlight of the album is the wonderful production, although it should be no surprise considering we have veteran musician Bulb in the front seat.

3.0 good | asdemonsburn | April 16th 10 | Looks like Spuntik has found a new band to worship. In between moments of memorability and groove, Periphery shows how to baffle the listener with un-originality, both in the vocal and guitar department. The juxtaposition of clean (sometimes annoyingly over-poppy) vocals and crunching 8-string guitars mesh well at times while others it feels like a chore to listen to. Boring, standard, and generic growling doesn't help matters either.
Inspired and un-inspired moments litter the album, sometimes from song-to-song, sometimes within a song. If you can't tell by now I'm saying this album is inconsistent. Bottom line: Cut out the fluff and the album would be much better at 45-50 minutes instead of an overbearing 73 minutes. Periphery has been overrated on this site into the next hemisphere by fanboys.

4.0 excellent | AlexTM510 | April 12th 10 | A near 4 years in the making-it was pretty obvious that these songs were going to be magic based on Misha Mansoor (AKA Bulb) output of the solo instrumentals he was making (via guitar plug-ins and fake drums-which sounded pretty good already). But with the songs finally properly recorded with a vocalist who can sing like an angel and growl and scream with gusto-Periphery have stumbled into something that is truly groundbreaking.rQuite frankly you could call this Meshuggah with melody-but these melodies not only intertwine in all the guitars and downbeat drums-they soar and will absorb you. Quite simply this is an exceptional debut from the 6 piece from DC that will start a new revolution of new bands probably ripping them too much but it was about time something like this would come out. An excellent Metal Album for 2010.

0.0 | K. Prince | April 16th 10 | Periphery, in more ways than not, is an album that warrants the hype that it receives. The technicality, flow and prowess of the band is astonishing at times - when the band has their shit together, they really make the wheels turn. On the other hand, Periphery also is way too long to stomach in one listen and has an overwhelming amount of aimlessness and repetition - vocal melodies are easily forgettable, Meshuggah chugging gets uninventive and the incessant recycling of ideas tarnishes the sacred name of Bulb. But don't get me wrong, Periphery still rules despite its disadvantages.

0.0 | | September 26th 12 | The album that separates the men from the boys. The boys who denounce this album are the same boys who sit in their mothers' basement all day weeding through 5th rate death/thrash albums pretending there's a difference between said albums. These kids, like the plebeians they are, use words such as "disjointed/random", "meaningless/pointless" and even "ironic/hipster", hah, to refer to this type of metal. I even saw some dude spout the term "ironic chords". What exactly is an ironic chord? A minor major seventh chord?rThis album, in terms of aesthetics, harmony and linear progression, is objectively superior to most metal, but metalheads don't like it because the logo isn't bloody enough.

4.5 superb | Shadein | April 10th 10 | They utilize three guitarists very well and it creates a unique sound. The bass and drums are just as good. The vocalist has a very high range of singing and decent screaming. His voice may irk others, but it doesn't bother me. The production is astounding, as it should be when listening to great music like this. All well-structured songs and the epic Racecar make this album one of my favorites of all time. I hope they have a long career and continue making music.

4.5 superb | Kronzo | January 5th 11 | I'm not sure who will agree with me here. But this is one of the sexiest metal albums I've heard in awhile. While it seems to be a mixture of other bands sounds, it is still a sound that hasn't been heard before (At least to my knowledge). Kudos to these guys.

4.0 excellent | Lempard | April 22nd 10 | Great album. I don't understand the disdain for the dudes scream. It's fairly unique, somewhat intelligible, and better than the 3 movies of the same name. It's certainly not as bad as hearing your estranged daughters scream over the phone as she is taken by an Albanese gang of human traffickers, because you reluctantly allowed her to travel to Paris with her friend Amanda, despite your better judgement as an ex-Secret Service agent.

0.0 | maxd89 | April 15th 10 | HAVE YOU ALL HEARD THIS ENTIRE CD?! THE ALBUM DOESN'T COME OUT FOR 4 DAYS. YEAH, SOME OF YOU MIGHT HAVE HEARD THE ENTIRE CD OFF TORRENTS BY NOW, BUT DON'T RATE THIS IF YOU HAVE ONLY HEARD 3 SONGS OFF YOUTUBE. CASE EXAMPLE: Qwe Qwetherington said "am i gonna hate this?" and rated the cd a 0.0! IF HE IS ASKING THAT QUESTION THEN HE OBVIOUSLY HAS NOT HEARD THE ALBUM! IF YOU ARE IN THE SAME POSITION, DON'T BE A DOUCHE BAG AND GIVE THE ENTIRE ALBUM SOMETHING ALONG THE LINES OF A 3.0 WHEN YOU HAVE NO IDEA WHO THIS BAND IS

0.0 | Motiv3 | April 13th 10 | Periphery according to some can be compared as a 'more melodic meshuggah' and to some extent i agree. Yet despite the heavy Meshuggah influence and chugging, Periphery expand beyond that, way beyond that with futuristic electronic beats and atmosphere, capitivating intertwined melodies and some of the best clean sections you will hear all year. It is true that Periphery wear some of their influences on their sleeve but they do not go into the realms of a carbon copy, using their influences in a sophiscated way, creating an album which has the feeling of familiarity but also the notion of innovation and uniqueness. Periphery, hopefully have a long and bright future ahead of them.

4.0 excellent | iswimfast | May 3rd 10 | As more of a mainstream music follower, I find the vocals to be the key in what makes this band a genre bridging one. 3.5 great | NeutralThunder12 | April 15th 10 | Mathcore, all that technical stuff, has been growing on me lately. Whether it's old Meshuggah, Cynic, Dillinger Escape Plan or Converge, I just have been loving it. But this has done it. The album deserves a 4, but a 4.5 is the personal rating, I'm a guitar player so... this is just crazy. The technicality and odd time signatures are never awkward surprisingly, which is a problem that many math bands have. It simply flows fantastically. The melody and altered clean vocals on this record are original and refreshing, especially for the genre. This blew me away. The main downside is that without the original and diverse vocal work, the music itself has been done before, but only so many have topped this is the genre-no joke. One of my favorites from the year. If only it was a little shorter, take out the poor tracks, and you have a math masterpiece.

This band is for fans of Sikth, Animals as Leaders, The Faceless, BTBAM, any of Bulb's other work, etc., etc. I didn't listen to any of this material without/with other vocals, so I can't judge as to whether it was better before. However, as a new Periphery fan, this is some of the best stuff I've heard since Death of a Dead Day.

2.8 good | Erwann S. STAFF | September 19th 19 | Hey I actually liked some guitarey stuffey on this one. Still not a fan of the chuggy chug chug and the whiney whine whine, but it's my favourite Periphery release.

4.5 superb | TheFourthCircle25 | April 18th 15 | There is a lot to love about Periphery's S/T. Musically, it's very ambitious, and that ambition follows through. All three guitarists are able to deliver catchy, heavy, sometimes chaotic riffs reminiscent of Meshuggah, Sikth, and The Dillinger Escape Plan. Spencer Sotelo's vocals, while not as good as they would later become, help to keep the pace going, and he is able to transition back and forth between heavy and clean. At 72 minutes it never feels boring and each song sticks out in their own right. Considering what the band would release later on in their career (the Juggernaut double album, to be clear), this album shows more so the potential that Periphery had and would later gain as they moved forward. However, it's still an album that many should go check out, as it is a perfect example of modern progressive metal. 9/10

0.0 | DjentyNerdo | September 1st 14 | Undoubtedly an album that has attracted more skepticism than it has gained fans, Periphery's first effort at creating an album exclusively dedicated to making a guitar sound like a duck not only sounded original, but also produced an entire new template for many other musicians to build upon. Sure, Meshuggah was first but does that really mean it's better? (imo) Not really.
Bump |
4.5 superb | VisceralUproar | January 26th 13 | Misha's riffs are instantly memorable and groovey, and Spencer's vocal delivery is equally brutal and melodic as it flows across the reworked instrumental tracks as if they were written just for him. A staple for djent lovers everywhere.

3.0 good | CrazyFool84 | July 12th 12 | While definitely offering up some promising ideas on their debut, Periphery find themselves struggling to move past a barrier seemingly put up by the band's intent on calling back to a metalcore/post-hardcore influence. What you get with this self-titled is not a complete package, but rather the hope that there will be greater things to come in this band's future. Some more than competent musicianship makes up for the misdirection in the majority of this album?s tracks, but overall the vocals here are a matter of taste (or maybe just more than enough plays to get used to them). All in all, I?ll be checking out the one these guys just released (Periphery II?) mainly out of curiosity, and the aforementioned hope I managed to squeeze out of this one. While this really is more deserving of a 2.8 or so, I'll round up because I like a few of the riffs on here.
Bump |
3.5 great | Deuce8311 | May 31st 12 | A very promising release, Periphery showcases their never-ending talent. The vocal range was very impressive, yet it was done to a level that fits the songs and does not soften the heavy riffs. The album keeps the listener interested because they never can predict what they will hear next. That is in part thanks to excellent production. The only complaint I have is the length of the album. "Racecar" itself is over 15 minutes long. They were still able to keep me interested throughout the album though. Some interesting stuff from an interesting band.

Bump |
4.5 superb | Isaacbean | April 23rd 11 | Periphery is one of the most original bands out there. "Original" is almost impossible to come by, as things are just altered or changed, but not created entirely new, but Misha Mansoor, with his complete lack of musical theory, creates some of the most amazing riffs and song structures. The only thing I think could use work is the screaming. But the combination of that, and the WEIRDEST singing by Spencer really make this different, but in a GOOD way; no, a GREAT way.
Bump |
3.0 good | IAmKickass | April 16th 11 | Periphery has some great ideas up their sleeve, and there are moments here where those talents are displayed. Personally, I feel a lot of the songs are a little extensive in length and the album runs out of steam after the halfway point. This is an album that will have to grow on me, and with the right amount of time it might do just that.

1.0 awful | nick0307 | January 23rd 11 | Generally, I love 'djent'. Generally I'm all for 'djent'... But I find this album to be an abomination of the popular metal sub genre. Here is a list of things I strongly dislike about the album. The vocals, the mastering, the guitar tone, the album length, the song lengths, the song structures, the song titles, the album art, the "trying to be as technical and 'djenty' as possible" approach to songwriting and finally the overprecise over-compressed, quantized/computerized sound to everything (particularly the drums). There are some great moments with killer riffs, grooves, and great musical ideas, but as a whole I am so very disappointed by this album. I bought it on iTunes the day it came out, after being interested by the Bulb/Periphery recordings up on Youtube, but it just didn't live up to my expectations. I have listened to this many times and tried to give it a chance, but as much as I want it to be... it's just not my cup of tea.

3.5 great | laterenima | July 10th 10 | 'Letter Experiment' and the accompanying 'Spartacus: Blood and Sand' video, whilst not organised by the band, make this a worthwhile 3.5/5.
As many have said previously, Periphery take many aspects of bands such as Meshuggah and Between the Buried and Me to form a consistent, albeit overlong hybrid of the two. Integrating Meshuggah's polyrythmic patterns and making derivatives of BtBaM's technicalities in riff, much is ahead for Mansoor and his crusade of very interestingly named hybrid pioneers.
