It's still interesting to figure out just how the hell Jack and Meg pulled it off. A tumbleweed of dirty delta blues, DIY ethics, primal drumming, commanding, eccentric vocals and one flaming red guitar. Elephant created, ultimately, a summation of everything that is great about rock music - straight, no chaser - in the twenty-first century. "There's No Home For You Here" nails seventies-flavoured rock with layered harmonies, "Ball and Biscuit" is arguably one of the best jam tracks on record since "If Six Was Nine," "Little Acorns" still remains the most bizarre introduction of a song ever and "You've Got Her In Your Pocket" is beautifully delivered by a pensive Mr. White on his lonesome. That's not even getting started on the singles, which have remained staples of rock radio for very clear reasons.
Yes, we know Meg isn't a brilliant drummer. We know that Jack's solos aren't thought out and meander far too much for their own good. We know how sick you are of hearing every school band cover "Seven Nation Army." This is an imperfectly perfect creation. The fact that this record still holds up in such impressive manner, years after its conception, whilst many of its peers fell off the face of the earth, speaks volumes about these addictive, intense, diverse and more-than-excellent songs.

Elephant is an excellent album, one whose visceral impact and rare intensity will surely resound for decades in the hard rock world. Jack White uses distortion with mastery, but never employs it as a substitute for musical invention; on the contrary, it is White's unmistakeable style-strange and piercingly ferocious, over a simple but strong backbeat-that gives Elephant the edge over other garage rock artists. Even so, of course, that would count for little if White's songwriting were less assured or his lyrics weaker, but he delivers in spades. Elephant is a tad uneven, but when it pays off, it hits the jackpot.

This is my rock album of the moment, and so it shall stay for a long time. Another long
review would be irrelevant, which is why I'm planning to write one anyway. Meg White's voice
is awesome, by the way, so don't hate. It's just acquired slower than Jack White, where you
love his voice instantly. 'Ball and Biscuit' is an incredible song in its simplicity.

when i was younger i was brainwashed into liking this album but not anymore. while i understand that the rawness and simplicity of the whitestripes is what is supposed to give it an edge, i just feel like music should have a bit more, well, music put into it to be considered good. Most these songs are seriously just one or two very simple riffs played over and over

The White Stripes perfected the imperfection of garage rock with their greatest release, Elephant. Jack White brought some of his best lyrics and guitar work over a grand production job. The album has many fan favorites, and of course the infamous Seven Nation Army, which many fans have grown to hate for how large it made the band. Never the less, you would have a hard time finding a single bad track on the album, and really should be in any music collection.
