Anathema’s first studio offering in the last seven years is a pretty startling display of what this band can accomplish when firing on all creative cylinders. Though the band has been consistently honing their craft since making the shift from a death/doom metal band to a full-fledge progressive rock unit, something about “We’re Here Because We’re Here” screams focus. The tracks here flow pretty damn smoothly with each other, offering up a full album of music rather than some scattered songs, and the quality of musicianship on each is a marked improvement from the album’s predecessor “A Natural Disaster”. At time’s channeling Porcupine Tree, and others just holding their own with a unique sound, the choices made for this record – even down to HIM’s Ville Valo’s guest vocals - were all the right ones.

anathema really do know how to deliver, that's for sure. their first effort in 7 years is just as strong as their last album, along with being a distinct and welcome change in atmosphere, this album is varied and covers many different emotions and soundscapes that anathema have covered over the past two decades under a new veil of light. there are a few missteps here and there, the formulaic dreaming light and the quite frankly awful get off get out but for every 1 bad track there's 4 great ones (literally). really excited to see where they go next because even after 2 decades, i still think this band have a LOT to offer. :]

Every passage on the album is excellently executed and what it doesn't bring to the table in terms of technicality it makes up for in simple but exciting arrangements with every instrument working collectively to make the foundation of every song varied but at the same time keeping it very simple. And it's effective as hell; it makes for very catchy songs that stick on your mind like super glue without merry-go-normal run of the mill song structure. It's basically a genius musical formula.

Anathema’s first LP in seven years proves to be worth the wait as the Doom Metal turned Prog Rocker outfit release an album of magnificent proportions. The songs on We’re Here Because We’re Here take on epic proportions with sweeping melodies and a never ending sense of grandeur and beauty. Overall this is a very focused record with a very uplifting tone throughout. While the band thrives with its stirring tunes, I wish they would have branched out a bit more in sound and delivery maybe with an aggressive track or something off the beaten path to mix it up.

Immense album and probably the favorite one I've bought this year. The degree of emotional intensity captured is frankly amazing. What kind of distracts me though is that "A Simple Mistake" sounds exactly like a Katatonia song and "Get Off Get Out" sounds exactly like a Porcupine Tree song. Not that there's anything bad about those two excellent groups, but it's still distracting.

Fantastic album, however, Get Off, Get Out sounds like something off Deadwing by Porcupine Tree
Ironic that Steven Wislon did the mixing, i would've love to see his reaction to this similarity xD
