From the hook-laden, anthemic "Life", the ambient glory of "Sister", to the haunting choirs that close out "Voices In The Fan", the final four songs that define Devin's career and everything in between, this is a record that everyone must buy and could only have been written by a true genius.

Ocean Machine is still my favorite album released by Devin Townsend. From the more upbeat beginning down to the slower, deeper end, This release has everything anyone could ever want from Townsend. Bastard and The Death of Music are somewhere in my top ten songs ever.

Devin Townsend's first "true" solo album is indeed one of his best. As opposed to his more aggressive Strapping Young Lad stuff, 'Ocean Machine: Biomech' takes a lighter and more heartfelt turn, though it is still heavy in its own right. There is not a bad moment on this album, but the ending is where 'Ocean Machine: Biomech' truly shines. "Bastard" and "The Death of Music" are easily two of the best songs I've heard in my entire life, both melancholic, beautiful, and filled with raw emotion. Check out: The whole thing.

Ocean Machine: Biomech featured a mix of hard rock, ambient, and progressive rock. The album was the follow-up to the critically acclaimed City by Townsend's extreme metal band Strapping Young Lad. Townsend considered Strapping Young Lad a "little project" that he considered a "parody" and not the intended focus of his music, but lamented that Ocean Machine, which he described as "the music that was really close to me," was largely dismissed upon its release.

Devin Townsend had already proven he was a man of vision when it came to brutality and anger in music with Strapping Young Lad. But when he struck out on his own, to capture the other side of him, we discovered he was a man of many dimensions and emotions, with equal amounts of vision for whatever other feeling he decided to express, through whichever type of music he wanted to express it through.
