Most of the songs are interesting to good. But Tom Violence, Shadow of a Doubt, and Expressway to Yr. Skull are just incredible.

Robert Christgau: "The good parts are so good, for a while I thought I was enjoying the bad parts." I do agree, Bob: the first half and the closer are monster tracks, thanks partly to the band letting go of no wave to embrace their pop sensibilities - song titles referencing Madonna and Marilyn, wow much pop culture. The middle part of the record still plays within the noisy no wave template the band had previously built, and that pleases me a tad less tbh. I prefer the pop. And peepz in general dig the pop too: incorporating more pop into their sound, as well as moving to SST, made the band go out of the NYC art scene to the national stage. It's however not their final form yet. This like SSJ1 tier.

EVOL is the first Sonic Youth album where they took the noise they were experimenting with and started turning them into songs. Most tracks on here follow a similar blueprint: Start off with a mellow beat with some chill, stoner type singing, then EVOLve into some terrifying, sinister instrumental/noise section. They somehow balance these two moods very well, although some of the instrumental sections could be a bit abrasive, and really hard to wrap one's head around. There are a few moments where it seems like nothing is going on at all. It's still a record with a ton of replay value, and also features alot for the bassheads, as their is alot of emphasis on the kick drum, so it sounds really good. A great sign of what was to come from one of the world's most innovative bands. Best tracks are Tom Violence, Shadow of Doubt, Star Power and Marilyn Moore.

10; EVOL is a great album, in fact, I think it's perfect. It's my favorite SY album. It includes everything I love in my Sonic Youth: a dark atmosphere, catchiness, guitar experimentation, and long, droning outros. All of that can be heard in this song, which is why I love it so much. Still though, the rest of the album is perfect. The soft intro to the album with Tom Violence, interesting guitars and soft vocals with Shadow of a Doubt, the dancy Starpower, the poetic In The Kingdom #19, Green Light, which is my 2nd favorite song on the album, with a haunting guitar riff, Death to Our Friends, a great instrumental, the creepy Secret Girls, which is followed by the creepier Marilyn Moore, and it ends with the amazing Expressway To Yr. Skull. The album is perfect in my opinion.

Their first few records were just noise. Cool noise, but just noise. To me. But EVOL shows the progression to excellence. The vibe is dark and scary for the most part, but the music takes the listener to places that are from that. Not the best, but songs like "Tom Violence" are among the Youth's best.

Upon immediately putting this into my CD player, I noticed that the sound & lyrical content was quite dark, just
showing me what Sonic Youth was like before their popularity took off. The one thing I've always liked about this
band is that EVERY song sounds different from the others, this album has that notion perfectly solidified as it's
songs create a different atmosphere for the listening experience. Shadow For A Doubt is in my view Kim Gorden's
darkest moment on any SY album due to her singing style & lyrics on the song, which is kinda haunting. A great
album by a great band & worth picking up
