Shallow Graves was made up of mere breathing exercises compared to The Wild Hunt. Kristian Matsson expands his palette so far that the only troubadour worth comparing him to anymore is himself. Effortless, poignant, ardent, melodious... Consider this Swede just another songwriter in 2010 threatening to exhaust our choice of adjectives, armed with nothing but his guitar. In a year where I inexplicably (and somewhat embarrassingly) resisted the inevitable hype behind certain rrecords and flat-out refused to hand out a 5 to any in particular, The Wild Hunt is certainly the most-rdeserving of all the thrill surrounding it. Guitar on his lap and sweet, wavering voice on hand, Sweden's rKristian Matsson crafted 2010's most enchanting album. There's simply nothing to hate and everything rto love when it comes to The Tallest Man On Earth. From the sweet, soaring imagery to the jangly, upbeat rrhythms of Matsson's virtuosic guitar-playing... each part is a perfectly interlocking piece of the puzzle rthat, upon completion, adds up to the best album of the year. With every croon, every offbeat, wistful rmelody, I'm reminded again and again why folk was the genre that pulled me into music in the first place, rand why The Tallest Man sits atop the genre today. There's a fine line between what makes an album rexcellent and one that truly separates itself from the pack, from the drooling onlookers that couldn't rquite reach the levels of intensity, of strength of feeling, of catchiness or consistency. In 2010, The rWild Hunt defined what it meant to be on the other side of this line.

How can you not like a record with a cover like that? It's like Darnielle and Corgan had a baby in Sweden and it made beautiful, beautiful folk music that is at once whispery thin and insubstantial and at the other time incredibly fiery and affirming ("King of Spain," anyone?). Awesome

It's been a long time since I've heard an album this instantly and permanently lovable. Ha. 'Lovable.' What an embarrassing understatement. The Wild Hunt has moments of joy and of pain, of regret and of hope, but is always humbly triumphant in its devastating beauty. Every perfect melody soars so gracefully on every perfect, but different guitar part (the vocal parts aren't just reiterations of whatever the guitar's doing), and it's all carried along by Kristian Matsson's mastery of that special kind of poetry that you understand, and understands you, a little bit better each time you hear it. He effortlessly blends emotional statements that seem to express the inexpressible with pitch-perfect imagery, and when this is combined with the rich, brilliant guitar melodies (or piano, in the case of the earth-shaking closer, 'Kids On the Run'), he creates a rugged, arresting, and simply fucking perfect soundscape of life-affirming song. The Wild Hunt is a classic because I knew I'd never get sick of it the very first time I heard it.

Matsson takes his exceptional songwriting in "Shallow Grave" to another level with The Wild Hunt. this album is just the perfect folk album. some of the best lyrics i've ever heard, beautiful guitar/fingerpicking, and an unique, expressive voice that just grabs your attention (in a good way). there is not a dull moment on this album that features Matsson alone with his acoustic/piano. this is an album that i can throw on at any time, and no matter how much i listen, it never grows old.

I can thank Sputnik for introducing this one to me. After one listen I instantly loved this. Each song is flooded with tasty hooks, beautiful and powerful guitar chords topped with a unique and harshly intense singing style. The songs are all very sparse and raw in the instrumentation and production. The real magic here is within the melodies, chords and songwriting in general, despite the limit palette of tone colours and textures. Everything just reeks with honesty, passion and musical detail. The album features quite intricate guitar work with dynamic and wildly diverse vocals. An American folk music influence is quite evident as he strums and sings with his influences on his sleeve, however, the music still feels fresh, timeless and original. For anyone who enjoys to sing along to music, and can appreciate creative lyrics, this album is a must have. For any real music fan.

When the music of the modern day is looked back on by future generations, I’ll be damned if Kristian Mattson isn’t entered into the discussion. Mattson has struck gold with each of his releases; winning us over with a combination of vivid lyricism, heartwarming melodies, and a distinctive voice to say the least. The Tallest Man on Earth has crafted something incredible once again with his 2010 installment The Wild Hunt; where those aforementioned qualities seem to meld so intricately and passionately.

It's hard for me to say what's just so perfect about The Wild Hunt. There's something endlessly refreshing to hear something as simple as this. The Tallest Man on Earth, armed only with his acoustic guitar and distinctive voice, he needs no production flourish or layers of instrumentation to make his music good. The songs are amazingly expressive, and the album covers a whole range of emotions. There's the spry and humorous "King of Spain," the plaintive and reflective "Burden of Tomorrow," the direct and affecting "You're Going Back" - the list goes on and on. I can say with confidence that The Wild Hunt is the best album I've listened to this year.

This isn't quite a perfect album, but it's a album that you feel like can change everything in its sheer simplicity.
