A very odd album structurally, but unlike other recent genre-shifts from metal musicians, there's
serious thought in this record, and the lamplit folk-horror vibes are absolutely in line with
Yellow Eyes' discography and side-projects. My rating on this is perpetually wavering - is it too
idiosyncratic for its own good? Is it merely a darkly playful exercise in range and
experimentation? Is it a dungeon synth masterpiece? I'm not sure. But it does demand repeated
listens, if sometimes out of mere bafflement. The Skarstads remain the most vivid and hypnotic
musicians in the US today.

To be honest, this shift in genre is not too unreasonable or unwelcome. Yellow Eyes have toyed with dungeony synths before, even if it was more for the purposes of expanding their gargantuan and devastating sound. What pains me about this record, however, is that this new direction seems to find the band in a place of little to no confidence. So much is obvious in moments when the band turns to their more typical blast beats and heady heaviness come into play. Beside that, the album does jump from style to style. Pulling together black metal (in the rare moments that it is present), doom, goth rock, avant-folk, darkwave, drone and ambient, and a plethora of other weirdness together into a cohesive structure is in itself a feat, so I admire Yellow Eyes for managing at least that. But again, a lot of the time they devote very little time to these new ideas of theirs, somewhat telling us that either they did not want to spend too much time there or did not know how to further develop it. At least returning to different moments could have helped the album's overall consistency.
