5.0 classic | NeutralThunder12 | November 12th 10 | The album where Toby Driver assumes his position as most adventurous and ambitious musician in the modern music scene. Possibly the best record he's ever done, flawless in it's execution and fully heart stopping right down to every melody you can find. "Marathon" may have the most pulverizing climax that I've ever heard. It might be the most amazing thing Toby has ever put together. "A Pitcher of Summer" is short and to the point, easily the perfect bridge between "Marathon" and the incredibly atmospheric "The Manifold Curiosity" which uses repetition in it's first half to seduce your ears, and then evolves into a much louder, sophisticated composition that gets more and more intense until it's end. The last couple of minutes are incredibly gripping and magical. The next two tracks, "Wayfarer" and the mammoth closer "The Antique" both use crushing density and snippets of minimalism , two completely opposite techniques too create incredibly varied movements to help end the album on the most beautiful of notes. Kayo Dot's "Choirs of the Eye" has a gorgeous, cinematic flow, feels complete, and shifts between soft, classical feeling sections and dissonant, jarring metal sections seamlessly. Toby Driver's magnum opus is first venture with Kayo Dot. His melodies are dreamlike, his cleans hypnotizing, and his shrieks terrifying. All of the elements of every note, every vocal, every lush string section, every malicious heavy section and every transition between each weaves together to create the most mesmerizing musical experience to ever grace my ears.

4.5 superb | Doppelganger | December 20th 06 | Choirs of the Eye: Greatest avant-garde metal album ever written. Toby Driver's writing is insanely powerful, and it merges classical with metal better than any album I've ever heard before. This album is home to some of the most epic moments of music history, especially one especially long moment entitled "Wayfarer." Choirs of the Eye is a must-have for anyone who enjoys musical epiphony.

4.0 excellent | charlopiano | April 21st 21 | I didn?t know metal could be this soothing. Well, it?s not like that all the time, the record has its fair share of more harsh moments. But the contrast from the hard metal to the soft soothing fingerpicking guitar with Thom Yorke-inspired vocals work extremely well. The kinda vague lyrics felt weird to me, and I wasn?t so good at picking them up either, since English isn?t my first language, but their descriptions felt really interesting especially at the end of the opening track. I could very well understand how this is a top tier metal record, because the production is really great and the lyrics are really great, even though I haven?t been able to decipher them fully.

4.5 superb | Alabaster Jones | December 24th 16 | It must have been incredible to hear Choirs Of The Eye when it first came out. For all of the amazing things that maudlin of the Well did, I don't think anyone expected that the guys who went on to form Kayo Dot had this up their sleeve. There's something so free and human about this album that it's hard to put into words. Everything just flows out so poignantly that the intricate and contrasting songs seem like some metaphysical expression of life and death. On paper it's a mixture of post-rock, chamber jazz, experimental metal, and avant-prog, but that alone falls woefully short of describing what actually transpires on these compositions. The only problem that can be heard is that sometimes the songs totally stop into silence and pick up in totally different places, but this is a minor problem and doesn't interrupt the flow of the album as much as it would seem. It's a truly mesmerizing and beautiful album that continues to get better after every listen, and would serve to spark the fire of one of the most interesting bands around.

5.0 classic | Andrew | May 19th 16 | One of the most original and captivating works of the modern era and the closest thing to a continuation of maudlin of the Well, similar in artistic scope but wildly different in terms of achieving tonal, atmospheric, dynamic, and stylistic diversity. You would be doing yourself a disservice missing out on this.

0.0 | Lambda | August 2nd 14 | An intricately composed and meticulously detailed work of art. Choirs of the Eye is a masterwork in organic, avant-garde songwriting- the record contains genres as diverse as jazz, ambient, black metal, and progressive rock, and still manages to maintain flow. No moment feels out of place or wasted. The production is similarly stellar. It is said that some of the songs here used over one hundred tracks in their recording, yet every note of every instrument is clear, and their tones are fantastic. Choirs of the Eye excels in every facet, and is a modern classic.

5.0 classic | Lovegood | October 10th 12 | Perfectly described by its title, Choirs of the Eye is an incredibly visual piece of work. With atypical song structures and odd chord voicings, Toby Driver creates an avant-garde masterpiece. My favorite part about this album is that the first few times you listen to it, you have no idea why it works so well. Hell, you don't even know if you really enjoy it or not. But then, once one truly dissects this album, truly gets lost in it, and truly sees the songs unfolding, it finally clicks. 10/10

0.0 | Wael | December 22nd 09 | I remember listening to Kayo Dot about 2 or 3 years ago and was really offput by the atonality and the minimalism I just shrugged them off as a band too pretentious for their own good. I was pretty dumb. Though Kayo Dot's music is difficult to get into it is some of the best composed music I have heard in years. It helps if you're familiar and fluent in one of the many genres of this album, but the key, as Toby Driver said, is to just let the music overwhelm you. I have listened to every track on this album dozens of times yet with each listen it manages to surprise me.
Here Driver's mastery of the form is on clear display, the music is extremely precise without being alienating and dense without being overbearing. I could write a track by track review but every track here is amazing, though some (The Manifold to Curiosity and The Antique) more than others.

5.0 classic | Thomas S. | October 27th 08 | What is there to say about Kayo Dot's Choirs of the Eye? This record pushes the musical boundries in every direction possible, manifesting itself as the most progressive (and my personal favourite) album of the last decade. Toby Driver has composed five of the most exquisite arrangements in recent memory; from the atrociously heavy "The Antique" to the beautifully serene and ethereal "Wayfarer", every second of each song asserts itself as deeply experimental, ground-breaking, and above all, emotionally moving. Death metal; classical; jazz; instead of naming every single genre attributing to this piece of work - and trust me, there are many - it's easier to say that this is music: true, unadulterated, heartfelt music.

2.5 average | FrozenFirebug | December 3rd 23 | This is only ever truly /good/ when it leans hard into the blackmetal-isms, which is unfortunately only for 1 1/2 or so songs. The rest is a mix of dull-toned "atmospheric" noodling and annoying vocals that bite off more than they can chew. Sometimes the... orchestral(?) parts elevate the shitheap, but most of the time they're cobbled together with the rest in an overcrowded way that doesn't ever think to check its surroundings to see if they belong or are needed. Track 3 would be spectacular without the godawful vocal effects spanning the first 5 minutes - that's the best praise I can give this.
