Not their most savage release, but definitely their most epic and memorable. Tons of soaring dual guitar leads, proggy breaks, clean vocals that actually work pretty well alongside the usual Horrendous fare.

This album is the modern day version of Symbolic and no I will not elaborate. All you need to do is listen. While these guys don't blatantly worship Death, they definitely feel like the spiritual successors. Chuck would be proud.

Grumpy take: my interest was lost after "Chrysopoeia...". Why are these ratings so high? For example, "Exeg (en) esis" was so annoying! At least the runtime of this album was relatively short... yay.

Metal album of the year for my ears in a year where I felt like it was kind of hard to find an album in that realm that really rose above the pack. 'Ontological Mysterium' has a wealth of individual tracks but also is knit together like a story where each chapter has its own personality but in the end they all contribute to a combined work of art. The stretch from 'Neon Leviathan' to 'Cult of Shaad'oah' is really the meat of the album and one of the best 15 minutes of music of 2023. 'Neon Leviathan' feels like typical Horrendous style of wild instrumentation, bold bass and what seems like death metal improv anchored by a few strong riffs. 'Aurora Neoterica' is a break from the intensity and just sounds wonderful with spacey leads and beautiful production. 'Preterition Hymn' is low key the track of the album with a Spirit Adrift-esque low-tempo brooding lead guitar harmony that builds and builds before a chant and one of the screams as of late. After that 'Cult of Shaad'oah' returns to great riffing and the wild instrumental antics that Horrendous do better than almost anyone else in death metal. Its like a looser, dirtier and grimy version of Athiest carrying that prog death metal torch.

I originally had this at a 3.5, just didn't click with me as much at the time, just wasn't there mentally. But returning to this a couple of times has really shot this up my list. Potential top 10 finisher right here, the whole thing front to back is great writing. Preterition Hymn is one of my favourite tracks of the year, easy.

I definitely knew I was in for something with The Blaze, which I loved, but man there are some incredible riffs and seriously intense moments on here. I definitely don't agree with them being the successors to Death, but Cult of Shado'oah makes that take not out of the question, INCREDIBLE song

Awesome record. If you've jammed the past two Horrendous records you mostly know what you're in for: colorful, progressive death metal inspired by the 90s prog death greats and adjusted for modern times. Shit rules. I like that they're still building on their sound without taking misguided and unnecessary risks, and my only criticism remains the same, which is that I wish they'd go a bit heavier with the production and in general.
