3.2 good | Erwann S. STAFF | May 10th 23 | National Youth Poet Laureate? Based. When these stark lyrics are accompanied by lush strings or potent guitar strummings, this is stunning although a tad too unfocused (some tunes just try to cram too much stuff). When it's straight-up poetry, it doesn't carry the same weight. A "fresh" album nonetheless that brightly wears its uniqueness.

4.5 superb | ajcollins15 | April 20th 23 | This might come down, in the end, to actually not being one of my favorite records because of the slow-burning nature of the album. But the poetic debut from Illinois-based folk singer/songwriter shows a huge amount of depth as well as intricate experimentation when it comes to modern-day contemporary folk. Through my listening of the album two contrasting singer/songwriter genres come to mind. The intricate and poetic style of Joni Mitchell, Elliott Smith, and Bob Dylan contemporary folk. While also being a somewhat pandering (in a good way) styling of a Mount Eerie, Bill Callahan, and even to some degree Mark Kozelek post-singer/songwriter. However, this all accumulates in a detailed and ambitious debut album from Kara that really is unique. With the bright strings over this dense lyricism on relationships, heartbreak, sexuality, and love. It makes for a rounded experience that will have you coming back for more. Especially on more ambient passages later on in the second half. Although there is a lot to play around with in the future, a truly breathtaking start from an upcoming artist that I hope to hear from again soon.

4.5 superb | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | July 7th 23 | A fantastic album, but only as long as you can take a plethora of breathy, rusty vocals on a sporadic guitar pluckering that often develop into a lovely tune and occasionally burst out into an all out orchestral menagerie. Kara's lyrics are a sight to behold (or text to beread?) and her ability to seamlessly flow from spoken-word paper-thin melancholy into a swelling odyssey is a mastery of its own.
