Say Anything is challenging themselves - to see how many 'witty' lines could overlap a standard pop-punk tune. Where this strategy worked before, something goes awry this time and compromises their lyrically stunning spirit. As a result, the album comes across to be a hopeful lunge at cutting edge and instead backfires, coming out half-great. Still a pretty fun ride the first couple of times, but is nowhere near being lifted up to the same platform as their previous releases. The first couple of songs come off as either shaky or boring and I find myself rolling my eyes at the types of lines I once thought clever. If you have In Defense of the Genre and ...Is A Real Boy this is not needed. But you can take it in pieces and collect the songs that are good to fill up your iPod. 6 Bumps | Bump

Say Anything sell out, but you realize that they've been sellouts forever, and what excellent sell outs they are. Track after track of witticisms and catchy riffs, culminating in the incredible "Ahhh...Men" 6 Bumps | Bump

Good God this is fantastic. Bemis is quite impressive, and the band creates riffs and melodies that make this the catchiest (not to mention most clever) album of 2009. Standout tracks: Hate Everyone, Less Cute, Mara and Me, and Ahhh... Men. "Fake players are the ones who play the game" 2 Bumps | Bump

Say Anything normalise slightly and the result is intriguing; Bemis still weaves and stabs, the Kings of Leon line an absolute gem, but their self-titled album comes across as a more streamlined, consistent and accessible In Defense Of The Genre. Wholly enjoyable and impressive. 2 Bumps | Bump

Every Say Anything release gets the same initial reception from me. I always start out thinking that there is no way in hell that they could make something as profoundly beautiful as Is a Real Boy and that everything after it is a massive letdown, then after a week or two I realize that everything they've done is profoundly beautiful and just as good as Is a Real Boy. So you see here kids, the lesson is: just shut up and enjoy the music. 1 Bumps | Bump

I admit the lyrics are quite enjoyable, but the music - sorry, but this ruins it. This is standard pop punk stuff. Sometimes pretty great ("Eloise"), often just uninspired and totally boring ("Do better"!). 3.2 stars, maybe even 3.5, but 4, 4.5 or even 5? ... Not in my world. 1 Bumps | Bump

say anything makes in my opinion their most complete and catchiest record here with each track being able to hold its own alone. What i mean is that you could take each track and make a single out of it, and each track can stand alone and together it just works. And this is in no way a fanboy hype-up, looking at this album objectively i can confidently say its their best musically and most mature. What gravitated me towards them in the beginning was their originality and max's lyrics, and now with their sound maturing its even better. 1 Bumps | Bump

Max Bemis makes an attempt at an eponymous album, but then again chooses to release his most perplexing album to date (as if a double sophomore album on a major label wasn't ambitious enough for a 23-year-old college drop-out). Interesting record; definitely bound to grow on you if not completely satisfying at first listen. 1 Bumps | Bump

This record definitely took some time to grow on me, but I'm really loving most of the songs on here. I could do without "Property", but that's my only big complaint. Bemis continues to grow as a songwriter and I'll continue to listen. Bump

Say Anything find their sweet spot on their self titled album. While the first two albums almost try to over do themselves [mostly in a good way], this latest album seems to find the band settling down and maturing while still making excellent pop-punk. The hooks are still their, even though the swearing isn't, and the instrumental diversity first presented to us on "Baby Girl I'm A Blur" is even more present on this album. A cohesive collection of songs that doesn't make a classic album, but still makes a very memorable one. Bump

I do believe that, and i quote Mr. Bemis (not word by word), "fucking longer with each song, and making less songs so that the ones made could be fucked for more time" approach to making the record really worked. This album is so good. And like some other users said, this is very streamlined and cohesive as a whole, so i think it'll probably be way more enjoyed than IDOTG. God, i can't go wrong with Bemis & Co. Bump
