'Unison Life' seems like an amalgam of the band's two previous records: the carefully crafted alchemy of structures from 'Nest' and the unadulterated energetic explosion of 'Burst' coalesce into something even more anthemic, even more melodic, even more skillful in terms of arrangement and vocal delivery.

This probably the best post-hardcore album of this decade. Really clever songwriting and fantastic variety of tracks. Chainlife and Liar are standouts.

What is it with Belgian bands creating the most sterile sounding post-whatever music? Enticing for a few songs but has essentially no momentum after the first 3/4 tracks.

Pummeling and burying post-hardcore album with a lot of the modern elements of post-metal thrown in to add a lot of rich atmosphere and aggression (seems in line with some of the modern post-metalcore stuff). Nothing to breathtaking but warrants a good listen if you are a fan of aggressive instrumentals and classic(ish) punk-style vocals.

Resolutely at the intersection of post-hardcore, alternative rock, shoegaze, and sludge inspirations, Unison Life is, for lack of better words (and available talent from this very writer), Brutus' maturity album, with everything good (and bad) that comes with it. Does it lose some of the batshit craziness of its predecessors? Yes, but it also doesn't lose itself along the way. Does it play at less visceral levels? Yes, but it's built in such a way that consistency is its primary attribute. So whether you prefer Unison Life over the first two records, now that's a debate between you and yourself. Brutus have done everything they had to do: craft another album and fill it with bangers that bring the old Brutus vibe while hinting at what the future Brutus will be.
