A good album....Definitely a step-up from "A Beautiful Lie", but it sounds a lot like AVA at some times....and that's a turn off.
Jared Leto probably wrote his best album to date....and i think people should stop the hating and give this a try.
Not even close to a classic....but still, a great album

Rarely do I find an album that changes my opinion on a band. This may be one of those kind of albums.

Aside from trying too hard to sound epic, 30 Seconds to Mars' newest record This is War lack the simplest of things: a sufficient amount of good material. Though Leto manages to start things up in a well enough manner with Escape and follows it up with three single-worthy tunes in Night of the Hunter, Kings and Queens and the title track, This is War goes steadily downhill soon afterwards. Hurricane is already pretty bland, but the band reaches an all-time creative low when the they hit Search and Destroy. Ballad Alibi is the last to just make the mark, until the album crashes down will all-or-nothing attempt Stranger in a Strange Land, which tries to make things even more epic than the sum of all that came before it. In the end, This is War fell down just as much as it tried to stand up.

Kanye: Yo Jared Leto, I'm real happy for you guys about that drama wit'cha label and all and I'ma let you finish, but my cameo on "Hurricane" is the best cameo on a rock record of all time. OF ALL TIME!
In all seriousness, this album can be summed up like this: do you like U2? Well, 30 Seconds To Mars does. A LOT.

Truly a long awaited, but great follow up to "A Beautiful Lie." While fans of A Beautiful Lie might not dig this initially, after a few listens, the album really grows on you (myself being one of those individuals). Perhaps the only down sets are the time the album took to be released, and a few tracks are very boring (Escape and L940 [Though, props to Shannon Leto for composing L940 and giving the album a different twist]).

Yea...its overblown ridiculously...and the lyrics are a bit cliche..but you can't deny the "epic" and the fun 30STM brings on TIW with it's large arena U2-esque sound that experiments with electronic passages. Oh, and this is what Tom Delonge wishes he could pull of.

A huge step up from their last effort, This Is War captivated me like few other mainstream records have. While I am a bit of a Jared Leto fanboy, the music is undeniably good, if not entirely original.

30STM shake off their godawful emo tendencies and take a step forward at last, not that that would have been too difficult a task but rather than establishing themselves as a credible musical act worthy of being taken seriously, they jump on another bandwagon, this time that of sterile, wannabe- U2, radio-ready arena rock. Somewhat paradoxically, however, it works very well for them. The music is more layered, ideas more interesting, songs hook-laden and initially epic in scope to the casual music listener. Upon closer examination, however, glaring flaws are revealed. Leto is trying so hard to channel Bono that his vocals sound even more forced and unnatural. Too many songs rely on the assembled choir of (allegedly, over 2000) fans and if one mentally removes them, average intrumentation is all that lies beneath. The songwriting itself is all too derivative, much like the debut, only this time the lads want to be U2, newer Kings of Leon and Rush all at once, again betraying a supreme lack of focus on the band's part. Rather than establishing a separate identity for themselves, they hover dangerously above the homogenous hordes of radio rock artists who are best suited for background music at IKEA only rather than for intensive individual listening. Though not a bad album by any means, once the hype dies down, This Is War is left in the dust as yet another trendy, of-the-moment record which will not stand the test of time, just like their other two albums, which is a shame given their potential.

Great songs like This is War, Kings and Queens, and Night of the Hunter are innovative and catchy enough to make this album good, but it wouldve been better as an EP. The remainder of the album seemed uninspired and almost just filler music to complete the CD. 30 Seconds to Mars have so much talent, they just need to sit down and use it.

In all honesty this is a good album by 30 Seconds to Mars but every time I hear it I feel like I am listening to christian rock with different lyrics. The guitar parts are generally unoriginal and the overall sound is very mediocre. But it is in no means "bad."
