Folk music for those who don't like folk music.rEqually I believe Mumford and Sons have crafted a genius record as they have an average one. It's bringing the casual music listener a beautiful but limited folk experience. rThe music itself never reaches limits as Fleet Foxes or the raw heart of The Tallest Man On Earth. It's folk music alright, but not great folk music.

Y'know, I hated this band at first. Then "Little Lion Man" wasn't so bad after hearing it on-air. But then every song after that started to sound the same.

Mumford and Sons takes one idea (the indie folk thing with banjos) then bashes it into the ground. Once you hear one song, there isn't a surprise left on the album. Soft verses with all out playing, banjo strumming as fast as possible choruses then back to soft can only be sustained for so long before the structure gets completely boring. At their best, Little Lion Man is a decent song, but everything still feels manufactured, soulless.

I don't care if it's "folk for the masses" or whatever. I enjoyed it. It was uplifting, catchy, and all around enjoyable music. Lyrics get a little repetitive, though.

I'm re-rating this album to a 5. I can listen to the album over and over and over and over again. Esp in times where life is pure shit, this album delivers all sortsa hope. AND Marcus's voice... mm. Love it.

What seems to stand Mumford & Sons’ music – a hybrid of folk and indie-rock (with a touch of a Celtic influence?) – above a slew of imitators is how endearing the record can become to its listener. Though it’ll probably take a few listens for this one to start to sink in, I found it making an almost immediate impact on me, a listener who generally is put off by this style of music. There are some definite stand-outs – The Cave and Little Lion Man being some of the stronger points on the record – and what’s nice about the rest of the album is the majority doesn’t have that ‘filler’ feeling. Sure, there are going to be some tracks you just can’t get into; but as a whole, I think the average listener of rock tunes should be able to get at least a little something out of this one. I look forward to this band’s future, as they definitely seem like they’ll be a promising act.

A very solid debut from a pretty cool band is exactly what this is. There are however many things that are bringing this down from being amazing or fantastic or even truly great. First and foremost, while I like the lead singers accent in the band, I do not think he has a great or even decent voice, sometimes it just sounds scratchy and plain awkward. Also, the arrangements are interesting at times because of the banjo, but even with that, sometimes the banjo and especially the piano are just 'there', and do not really accomplish anything, even in the terms of creating an atmosphere. The album is definitely fun though, and great to sing along too, but overall, it's just a solid debut from an interesting band. If they work the kinks out, get each instrument to have it's own identity instead of just being there to be there, and the singer begins mastering tones, this band could have a real awesome record in the future. Decent job boys.

A really nice, friendly slice of country/folk rock that really works well and has some really good standout tracks there-Sigh No More, The Cave, Dust Bowl Dance etc. Really good release that still holds up despite the amount the radio played little lion man. It has a lot of soul and energy to it and actually sounds like some people havign a bit of fun which is exactly what music should be

Catchy, easy and likeable music. I'm not really a big fan of folk music, but this "bluegrassy" sound I can definitely like. You learn the lyrics after just a listen or two. A feel-good-album.

It's a solid album. Mumford and Sons get a lot of hate, presumably because they found a way to package and sell folk music. And while I agree that they certainly arent the first to try what theyre doing, they are the first to get some serious success with it. And honestly, the majority of the album is definetly solid. There is certainly heart and soul to be found here. It's not the 2nd coming of Christ, but hating on it seems a bit senseless to me.

There was soo much hype around this album, and yes this is a great album, but thats just it, its great and nothing more. They do a great job of making indie folk/bluegrass mainstream. I love the banjo work throughout the album, its there and you notice it but its not the only thing you notice. Also it just has some good jams that are perfect for driving around town on a winter day.
