God dammit. The Ephemeral EP got my hopes up only to have Pelican release another album that while good doesn't live up to their potential. Don't get me wrong, there are moments where What We All Come to Need is downright beautiful (the title track, the end of Specks of Light), but the pacing of the album throws everything out of whack. The songs are played too fast, never letting any atmosphere set in and making the whole thing sound like a blur of could-be-cool riffs if they had only slowed down their click track while recording. Oh yeah, and their drummer still isn't helping things with all his snare-ride-snare-ride patterns.

So basically about 8 months ago, I went to a HMV in Calgary looking for some post metal. I heard bits of the genre but didn't own a record, so I blindly picked up City Of Echoes. In conclusion I lost the record like 2 days later and didn't give a fuck because it basically a borefest. Now it's the present day and I am quite familiar with the genre and City Of Echoes is still snoozetacular, but I really enjoyed what I heard from The Fire in Our Throats Will Beckon as did almost everyone else. So you would think Pelican would go into the studio and think "maybe, we should go with the more atmospheric, epic approach other then boring listeners into submission with non stop uninspired riffs." Well you were half right.

Another great album by Pelican. They even have some droney tracks now.

Wow.....this band never disappoints me! Definitely in my top 10 for the year. And can I just say that I think people are too quick to judge how good their music is? GIVE IT MULTIPLE LISTENS PEOPLE!!!! You can't just listen to an album once and be sure it won't grow on you. This band did not deserve all the hate they got for City Of Echoes. That was a GREAT, albeit under produced album. It just took quite a few listens to understand what they were going for.

VERY disappointing. Pelican need a rawer, less crisp production, and they just can't play post-hardcore like Rosetta does. Pelican is a loose band - this is so tight that there is next to no passion in the performances, and the songs go absolutely nowhere half the time. BORING.
The vocal experiment on "Final Breath" is abysmal...get a real singer. Isis wouldn't sound as good with a "real" singer...Pelican needs one if it wants to use vocals, unlike the other instruments. The presence of vocals would be an epic moment in Pelican music, so a clear style would convey this sound properly.
Please do not try this again. You used to be so great...

Pelican is a band that's been in the whole postrock/metal genre for years. And for years they've been doing a solid job. They've started off with a typical sludge sound and evolved into a more postrock sound. But the sound never sticked to me, it was good, yes, for a while. But then it was just plain boring to me. And the same (unfortunately) happens with this album. Some songs are awesome, but the most of it are quite boring. And it pains me to say so.
