Am I listening to the same album as everyone else? I listened to the entire album on repeat over and over again at work, and time after time the only tracks that stood out to me were "Dark Horse" and "Cruel Bloom". The latter track gets originality points to me because it has a very Tom Waits on acid vibe to it. The rest of the album is a snooze fest. Maybe it's my recent inability to get into heavy music. Maybe it's the fact that every song follows the same relative formula of being short, spastic, and intentionally painful on the ears. As for being better than Jane Doe, Jane Doe was overrated to begin with, hardly deserving of the classic status it's been crowned. So I'd put this roughly on par with that album. Average. Painfully average. Everyone, get off of Converges nuts. They are little more than disorganized noise with occasional moments of glory hidden amongst the mess. 32 Bumps | Bump

In all seriousness, Axe To Fall after even one listen pretty much destroys any and all competition for the top honors, and aside from Jane Doe (and that might be tentative) this is the best shit this band has EVER written. I don't know how Converge got even more brutal AND catchy at the same time and I don't care - this record eats the competition, shits them out and beats the pile with a sledgehammer. Some interesting riffs, but jeez this is neither Metal nor Hardcore which makes it Metalcore which in turn makes it sound really gay. Whoever gives this a high rating has a really bad ear for not only Metal, but music in general. This band (and many bands like this) clearly don't know how to structure their songs or know which riff flows into which one and there is no concept of soloing. So why even attempt to play something that sounds like Metal and is this shabby? I'm not denying that some riffs are catchy and the drumming is pretty tight, but the songs are just poorly made and the vocalist sounds like a peacock getting it's neck broken. 4 Bumps | Bump

Apparently myspace also dislikes this band, as it only allowed my to listen to the first five songs on the album before unallowing me to continue playing. Damnit, myspace. One terrible characteristic about this album is the terrible vocal sound. Sometimes the vocals sound layered, which adds a distorted "feel" while other times they seem simply distorted and vague. This poor vocal quality ultimately robs the singer of personality, accessibility and quality. Dark Horse begins the album and is plagued by vague vocals, in that the harsher screams are both undecipherable and hard to focus on. You can't really tell what the singer is doing during these parts. Reap What You Sow has some fast parts that simply seem sloppy. Technical guitars try to keep up with quick screams, and while still being technical add an urged, forced feel to the song. A nice guitar solo hardly makes up for the section before it, until the horrific screams begin again and the quality goes back down again. Axe To Fall -- Terrible punk sceaming opens this track. Still can't tell what is going with those vocals. Effigy -- More screaming Worms Will Feed -- A slower song with an annoying main riff, and equally annoying vocals, yet again. 3 Bumps | Bump

Stop talking about the lyrics! THERE ARE NO LYRICS. The cheesy high-school poetry they stick in the liner notes very rarely has anything to do with the indecipherable screaming on the record. That's fine for a band like this. It's all about the overall effect. In that regard, they blow it on this record. I feel a little better knowing that the cornball faux-slayer leads can be mostly be blamed on the lame guest musicians but still....on a converge album?? They used to be above that sorta thing. And let's get real: everything post-Jane-Doe has more or less been a retread. There have been slight tweaks and improvements in the sound but nothing as dramatic as the leap from "When Forever Come Crashing" and "Jane Doe". This really hasn't been a problem until now. Sure, there are moments where they're leaner and meaner than ever before (the title track for instance) but for the most part all the extra ingredients just gum up the works. Oh btw, the last two tracks are absolute garbage. Get it together you fucks! 1 Bumps | Bump

Don't be quick to judge this collaboration effort as a normal collaboration album. Converge deserves an open mind rather than just a label of incohesive since it features a wide array of hardcore artists. Axe To Fall is a great album in the correct context. At this point in their legendary career Converge are spreading the wealth, so to speak. This album is being released simply because Converge can and still will do what they enjoy, that is playing hardcore music. It does expand the boundaries of Converge's sound somewhat with more noticeable influences from post-metal and even a acoustic track, but it doesn't feel as legitimately experimental as some of their previous works. Or in other words, it isn't meant to be their magnum opus. If you're looking for Converge with their ambition, creativity, and chemistry at it's peak refer back to Jane Doe. If you're looking for an enjoyable continuation of a legendary career give Axe To Fall a few spins. 1 Bumps | Bump

Converge put out the next chapter in there amazing career with Axe To Fall. From Kurt Ballou who creates his most brutal and technical riffs, or Jacob Bannon who throws out his most savage vocal performance in years. With all the great skill Converge has shown, nobody has improved more than drummer Ben Koller who demolishes his kit and has no mercy for his double bass more than ever. Guests pay respect to one of Punks greatest bands by adding there own twists to the trademark Converge sound. From the mature approach and tributes this album presents, all signs show this might be the "swan song" of a vetern band. The only thing certain is Converge have put out an album and the results couldn't be better. Bump

My girlfriend explained to me once why she enjoyed hearing a particular speaker talk. She said that throughout the main body of his speech, she was always wondering what the point was or where the speaker was going. But, at the very end of the speech, the speaker ALWAYS said something that made the entire talk click instantly. That is EXACTLY what Axe to Fall does for me. While I know that the album is good in the middle of it, I'm waiting hopefully for something to make it click, for it all to make sense. And then I began to hear those oddly distorted guitar notes of Wretched World and I fall in love. Bump
