You know how Jesse Lacey always seemed like he was about to lose it on previous Brand New albums? Well, now he's lost it. Daisy, the latest (and final?) studio album from the band neatly packages everything the band does well in a wonderfully new and different aesthetic. The sheen of Deja Entendu and The Devil and God are Raging Inside Me is replaced with messiness and danger. Daisy finds the group expanding into genres unfamiliar to them and potentially offputting to their fans (The first song is skramz influenced for fuck's sake), but Brand New remains artistically intact. The power and impressive ability to turn a simple song into an emotional ride is still there. The first wave of connections links Daisy to In Utero, and while stylistically the albums are generally different, the aura around each record feels similar. Daisy is purposefully alienating- dissonant when it could be harmonic, abrasive where it could be smooth, yet those looking for the emotional resonance that Jesse Lacey can deliver with an unhinged shout of a startingly immediate hook will not be disappointed. "Vices," "At the Bottom," "You Stole," "Sink," all feature some of Jesse's best vocal performances.

In short, Brand New are still so c-c-c-controversial, but that's precisely why Daisy is the album you need to be listening to right now.

For those paying attention, Brand New like to reinvent themselves from album to album. With Daisy, instead of the brooding melancholy of the Devil and God are Raging Inside Me or the post-adolescence angst of Deja Entendu, we are given an energetic new Brand New paying homage to their influences. Daisy is built upon a structural cage that draws heavily from pre-Sony Modest Mouse and even from more abrasive acts such as Jesus Lizard. Fitting with this lively sonic exploration, Jesse Lacey's voice now ranges from a higher than normal quirky drawl to a piercing scream. This all makes for an unexpected listen for those wanting something familiar, but people open to this new heavier Brand New will find lots to like.

Brand New follow up everyone's favorite record, TDAG, with a very dense, strange record that's sure to alienate their pop fanbase that nutted over Deja Entendu and may even confuse those that loved the previous record. BN do away with most of the pop hooks and have instead focused their energies on a record that is lean, mean, and at times jarring to listen to, but not without it's own level of brilliance. Songs like "Vices" and "Gasoline" merge raw noise breaks with Lacey's piercing screams (sounding very reminiscent of In Utero) whereas songs like "At The Bottom" and "Bought a Bride" often come across as a mix of the newer sound with flashes of TDAG. I guarantee a lot of their fans will hate this, but those who like growers are going to love this, and Daisy is a strong record as any to go out on.

Daisy isnt isnt half as good as people pretend or invent.
Anyone that knows something about music besides this decade knows that Brand New is more like Brand Old right now. This is Brand News impersonation of Nirvanas In Utero with some Modest Mouse throw in the mix, but different than their previous records where The Smiths/Morrissey influences work beautifully its their biggest flaw to me: I cant help but think about Nirvana and Modest Mouse while listening. And how theyve done before and way better.

I understand that Brand New reinvent themselves with each new album, and the same applies for Daisy. However, it feels more like a regression both lyrically and musically for Brand New. Certain songs are just clear duds: 'Bed' bores; 'You Stole' drags; 'Bought A Bride' is almost inaudible, and amongst these are some good- great songs. The extremely misleading opener 'Vices' ends up being a highlight, and 'At The Bottom' may be the best song of 2009. Despite its flaws, it's still an enjoyable listen with some great songs to be heard, but disappoints overall.

Poor Kurt Cobain. First, Guitar Hero V. Now this. If GH5 wasn't a good reason enough for Kurt Cobain to kill himself again, this would be like the final nail on the coffin.
This record would be innovative if it was released back in the nineties, maybe after Nevermind and before In Utero. If Kurt Cobain released In Utero after this, maybe Daisy could be considered innovative, but even so Kurt would have done better, since In Utero is basically what they were trying to achieve here.
The biggest draw on every Brand New records is how an awesome lyricist Jesse Lacey is. Even though some could argue that he privileges rhymes and one lines instead of good songwriting (I strongly disagree, but I've heard this kind of argument before), it's completely out of question how TDGARIM, DE and YFW have better lyrics that this. I'm the kind of guy who loves DE better than TDGARIM, but I've never denied how much of a masterpiece TDGARIM is, because it is in fact a masterpiece.
The problems with this record go beyond the fact that remembers me that I've heard this before and done it better, the major and fatal mistake on this record it's the fact that they are capable of so much better. And this effort sounds like careless because since it's been proved here, a lot of people will eat up anything they do.
I still think Jesse is a genius though. If this record hadn't the name Brand New on it, people would rip it to pieces or simply don't care. He's proving that he can literally rip off bands, do it worse and people will still eat up regardless.

Brand New reinvent themselves again, where many bands relatively stay the same their entire career, or decide to flip the whole damn thing on one album and "mature." Daisy begins where they left off in TDAG and continues to progress into a rawer and darker territory. It's amazing to pop all four cds into a playlist and listen to the bands progression from Your Favorite Weapon to Daisy, it's like listening to a beautiful car wreck, where the band deliberately speeds into a wall of grungy guitars and gnarled lyrics. Where TDAG had an epic sound, Daisy skews off into an alternate 1993, and is already being compared to Nirvana's In Utero. Had Nirvana been able to make a few more albums, and Kurt continue his improved songwriting of You Know You're Right, Nirvana's 5th record could have sounded much like Daisy, atleast lyric wise. Now, when I compare Daisy to In Utero, I'm not saying that because both are loud and grungy that they sound the exact same, I'm comparing the aura's of the two albums and the "I don't give a shit what you want to hear, I care about what I want to play" mentality of both. Is this TDAG part two or the second coming of Deja Entendu? No, but that's not what Brand New wants it to be, it's the next, most logical, and most likely last step in this bands evolution. In words that have been repeated by many musicians, including Kurt Cobain, "it's better to burn out, than to fade away," and that's exactly what they're doing. They laid all their cards on the table, cleaned up, and walked away (most likely) from the table ahead before they became "just another band" and for that I applaud you Brand New.

Am I the only one who thinks Brand New is going downhill with each CD? I will admit I am a huge fan of the first two albums, but what the hell is this. I understand artists change over time, but this is nothing like what I originally liked about this band. It seemed they tried to get more "experimental." It just does not work, and I can not get into any of these songs. This CD was not for me, but I can understand other people may enjoy it. It just isn't the same Brand New for me, that I know and enjoy. The only reason I gave this a 2, was because musically it is pretty well done. And the start and end I thought were a cool touch with the intro to the first and outro to the last track. And it didn't sound like a horrible recording to me, just not my cup of tea and seen as a regression.

Many people thought this album was going to be The Devil And God pt. 2 and many people thought that Brand New would revert to their Deja Entendu ways. What Brand New has done is come out with a extremely grungy album, completely overdoing the soft and loud formula that they had perfected on their previous two albums. The lyrics on here are very average and just don't seem to have the meaning of the lyrics on The Devil And God. The instrumentation on this album is also very mediocre with all the songs seeming to blend together. It is just a very average record with no catchiness outside of a few tracks and a sound that wears the listener out. Listen to "Vices", "At The Bottom", and "Gasoline", and "Noro". Then don't bother with this.

part 2. Daisy is Brand New stepping out of their comfort zones and
exploring new ideas. Unfortunately, those new ideas don't work very well most of the time.
Highlights would be "Vices" (Screamo Brand New? More of this would've been amazing!), "At

This doesn't sound like the Jesus Lizard or Modest Mouse at all to me. To be honest, it sounds like some Long Island emo 30-somethings discovered whammy bars, and then used them to make a record that sounds like a halfway point between the Blood Brothers and Godsmack.

First of all let me say if your expecting another The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me get over it! Daisy is not the massively crafted masterpiece that their third release was, but what it is, is another fantastic step in the growth of one of our generations most diverse acts. Though this might not seem like an evolution from their immense previous effort but this is a very honest seemless effort. Lyrically and musically it seems that like the glimmers of hope shown on TDAGARIM have been replaced by pure anger and hate. So all in all although this may be more simple and less life changing than their previous 2006 release it contains some of Brand New's best songs (At The Bottom, Bought A Bride, Daisy, Noro) and it is a very natural progression for Jesse Jacey and company. And if you don't well they don't really give a fuck.

What Brand New ultra-fans often accuse detractors of their last release The Devil and God... and now Daisy of is an inability to accept the band's maturity and evolution. But this misses the point. Starting off as a rip-roaring pop-punk outfit with some of the most exciting and dynamic abilities to grace the deliberately simplistic genre, they have now become the epitome of boring, sour college kid rock. Brand New didn't need a complete genre shift to demonstrate to every one that they were far ahead of their pop-punk peers in terms of lyrical introspection, yet here they crown themselves the kings of self-important, meaningless indie-rock verse, inadvertently destroying their reputation as a band that could successfully marry raw emotion with brooding thought. Most bitterly, lead singer Jesse Lacey's vocals have now abandoned the visceral outrage that defined the band's earlier work, replacing them with a scatterbrained performance that ranges everywhere from excruciatingly annoying screaming to Modest Mouse drone. Oddly enough, this outing's obvious plea for anti-commercial outsider appeal is actually the opposite, as it is specifically manufactured to appeal to the band's aging fanbase. Those who enjoyed Your Favorite Weapon are now entering their twenties, and angst, the band figures, is no longer their dig. And so they instead offer faux-literary embellishment talk-sung (and worst, screeched) over blurry, banal chord progressions. Dullness is not maturity. This album is just boring.

Is Daisy really all that controversial? No, it simply is just another album by a band choosing to progress in a direction nobody envisioned. Had this been released by any other band it certainly would not have garnered half the attention, but because it's backed by assumed geniuses it receives the pandemonium. Alas, in itself Daisy is pretty ravishing and uninviting. Vices employs all the trickery to really be found on the disc, seemingly emotional and beautiful it jolts the listener into a cutting edged paced not emulated by the band before. You come to understand the ride before its even over, you know that when things seem calm they almost surely will erupt, thus subtracting from the experience, resulting in a disc that isn't necessarily their strongest. Still, Brand New know how to make even the most predictable moments enjoyable delivering several diamonds in the rough.
So if you must: Noro, Sink, At the Bottom

I respect this album. There are not too many bands that can have a different musical focal point on every album & it actually be audible. Im glad they make it a point to bring their fans somewhere different & not just play it safe (good example of a play it safe band, Taking Back Sunday. Ironically Jesse played bass & back vocals for TBS in 99-01). I appreciate the neo-grunge feel of this album; no band is stimulating my ears with this sound right now. Ive only gave this album a couple full listens but I think it will grow on me with its originality & unexpected musical twists & turns. Unfortunately, lyrically Jesse isnt that interesting on Daisy. But in his defense, oddly to me, the simplicity of his lyrics contrast well with the eccentricities of this album & make a easier route to follow along with on this album amongst the dissimilar musical approach. There are so many things that are unfortunately wrong with the direction of their new album. Though the main reason for the experimental mess is because Jesse had let Vinnie construct most of the songs (i.e - lyrics, guitar) and sadly it definitely shows. This new album lacks what all previous albums what made them a joy to listen to. Mainly the lyrics, i can't stress this enough. Jesse had the most amazing lyrics where you could actually find some sort of connection with, making the song feel as it was intended for you. The lyrics heard on 'daisy' constantly talk about 'beds' (seriously, roughly 3-4 songs mention a bed of some kind. Is it intentional or do they have an infatuation with beds). The next point would be the instrumentation. The record is a complete mess, an 'experimental' mess to be precise. It tries too hard to sound raw and experimentally stripped down. Where i think they made their biggest mistake was by stripping everything that would have made each song sound alot more engaging. I think that they recorded the songs as soon as they wrote it, without much tweaking or re-tooling. Though i'd still enjoy this album if i was either intoxicated which is something, right?

Each song is dense and layered, often with distorted guitar and Jesse Lacey's frightful scream drifting in the background, but a part like this is often followed with a soft chilling lyrical melody. Way too soon to begin comparing this to the rest of the discography, seeing as TDAGARIM is possibly my favorite album ever made, this has/had a lot to live up to. The album starts off with "Vices" starts off with a sample from music. (taken from the 40's?) then goes into the most exciting song an the album. Seems like Brand New have embraced the New York post hardcore sound. "Bed" has another new sound Brand New has adopted sounding like blues influenced indie rock."Gasoline" is very powerful track, but not a highlight, imo. "You Stole" takes me back to TDAGARM, but with the bluesy guitar. "Be Gone" sound like a song Issack Brock gave to Jesse Lacey, not a bad thing. "Sink" has a perfect balance of energy. "Bought a Bride" is the highlight. "Daisy" is equivalent to "Handcuffs". I appreciate "Noro" but didn't really fall in love with it, I'm expecting it to grow on me though. This is a bit hard for me to call at the moment. Its a bit hit and miss for me really. But its an album that I can actually enjoy listening to the background. After enough listens and going thru it, I'll probably post more ideas later.

Vice sounds exactly like Glassjaw, its a good album but I think Jesse may have gone off the deep end finally. Maybe it will grow on me, I hope it does, but for right now it seems like something that was forced, forced into progression, when it doesn't happen organically it can go really awry.

Brand New just keep evolving. For better or for worse. From the pop punk Your Favorite Weapon to the alt rock/acoustic/pop punk-but-good Deja Entendu to the emo/almost post-punk sound of The Devil and God to what we have now, Daisy. This album probably has the most range from all of their releases. From the raw screams of songs like Vices or gasoline, to the almost Industrial sound of Noro, to the Modest Mouse influenced In a Jar and At The bottom. I would also like to say that Modest Mouse was a fairly big influence on this album. Any modest mouse fan knows what I'm talking about. But it's far from a ripoff. It's more of a fusion of that sound with what they had from Devil and God. With more. It took a bit to grow on me (first two listens I wasn't impressed at all) But it's a damn great album. I hope it's not Brand New's last album.

I've come to the conclusion that Brand New are a progressive band. With that said, to further what every one else has said, this album IS definitely different from previous Brand New albums. I've grown to love progressive bands, for example, Minus the Bear, Propagandhi, Brand New. So I had a hunch this was going to be surprising. And well, it was, but in a good way. I really don't have anything bad to say here, except for "Be Gone," that is a track that I cannot even plague my ears with. Every other song on this album is great. I love how Jesse's vocal are different and very intense. I also love the guitar, the lyrics... But I'm not even going to compare this album to Br& New's other works. It's not worth it, every album is vastly different. And that's what gives me pleasure listening to Brand New and progressive bands. You never hear the same shit twice, and it's amazing they have talent enough to re-create themselves from album to album. I give them props for not playing the same old shit like Taking Back Sunday and all those d-bags always have. x

I gotta wait at least a year to give this a 5, but as of right now it feels like this really could be bumped up there. It takes a few listens, but this is absolutely astounding.

It's not that its not as good as TDAG, its just different. I'm loving it. Seems to be a grower.

Am I the only person who realizes how amazing "You Stole" is?

Bump

4.5 superbDinosawesome | August 31st 09

Incredible. Another fresh and amazing effort that underlines the reason why Brand New seem to be a brand new band (bad pun intended) with every single album. The perfect way to follow TDAG and drive off the pansy pop-punk pansy's for good.
