| 3.5 great | Caleb McAlpine CONTRIBUTOR | September 9th 09 | The Resistance is, in a matter of a terms, a passable sequel to Black Holes and Revelations in the sense that it continues to indulge in faux-climactic Queen-isms, electronic pop experimentation and a supreme lack of interesting guitarwork. In what is an expansion and a natural progression from Black Holes..., Muse have simultaneously created some of their strongest and weakest work to date. The Resistance is still Muse and it's still fairly enjoyable, but those expecting another Absolution will undoubtedly be left with a bitter taste in their mouth.

| 3.5 great | Matt F. | September 9th 09 | Extremely hard to get into, even the symphony. However, if given a fair chance its brilliance will click with you. Yes United States of Eurasia is a cheesy queen rip off. Yes Unnatural Selection rips off a lot of different sections to songs on Origin of Symmetry: most relevant of which is 'New Born'. Yes MK Ultra sounds like something that would have fit well with Absolution. These faults and more are quite apparent, but Muse do, however, reinvent themselves with The Resistance: see tracks like 'I belong To You' (the closest thing to R&B Muse has ever done), 'Resistance' (possibly their catchiest song to date), and, of course the Exogenesis: Symphony (the most ambitious project they've ever taken on).
Give The Resistance time to grow on you and in the end you'll be well rewarded, despite its flaws. After all, anticipation and hype suck ass.

| 2.5 average | Mark Campbell | September 9th 09 | Album isn't horrible but by far Muse's weakest effort. While it's definitely very well-made (i.e., spent a lot of money on super-sparkly production), there's a lack of rock on this one and too much keys/piano. Musically it's still Muse, only watered-down, and not even in the same league as Absolution or OOS. "Unnatural Selection" is easily the best song on the record (probably because it sounds like an Origin cut), but "MK Ultra" (did anyone else see that title and think "cheesy fighting game title"?) is pretty awesome too. "Exogenesis" is pretty overrated, certainly not the album-saver people are hailing it as, but definitely one of the highlights even if it kinda falls on its face.
The first half unfortunately does a great job of killing the momentum for this record, as "Uprising" is by far the worst opener Muse has written as of yet and "Resistance", while catchy, is musically ho-hum. "Undisclosed Desires" just sucks, flat-out, and sounds like a bad Depeche Mode b-side with even worse lyrics. And let's not forget "I Belong To You" which seems to be the most tepid song this band ever wrote. What happened to the dope guitar riffs? Dominic's drumming on BHAR? The dynamic songwriting? Interesting, varied production? Truly versatile music? And did I mention the lyrics are REALLY bad on this record? Mr. Bellamy, your band is already huge and you didn't need to dumb your music down so the stupid American teenyboppers that will forget your song in one week would "get" it. Stop jacking off, realize that you'll never be Chopin or Freddie Mercury, let your bandmates shine for once and come back in a few years when you freshen up, please.

| 1.5 very poor | Brian Owen | September 9th 09 | Nothing saves this album from being anything more than a self indulgent ego-trip for Matt Bellamy. He warbles and wails for close to an hour, but no matter how hard he tries there isn't a single defining moment here. The best songs here are some of the worst songs Muse has written and Exogenesis fails at stirring up anything but boredom. This album sounds forced the whole way through and even the hard rocking songs are hollow and not exciting.
Someone else said "you couldn't possibly have a soul" if you aren't moved by Exogenesis. This statement is completely ironic since this entire album feels soulless and I can't listen to it without cringing. It's the musical equivalent of white bread.
The only good thing about this album is that muse can't possibly make anything worse.

| 2.0 poor | red0 | September 8th 09 | WHERE THE FUCK DID MUSE GO this is awful, outside of a few songs. Seriously, were they listening to a Maroon 5 album when they wrote it. What a cock-block of an album. Stop trying to appeal to teenyboppers in America you play freaking incredible hard rock, and where did it all go?

| 2.0 poor | Adam Knott CONTRIBUTOR | September 20th 09 | The biggest problem with The Resistance is that Muse, for the first time, sound like a band that could be imitated. There are very few hugely surprising ideas through its runtime, however varied the atmospherics are and however big the anthems become. The tangents that Bellamy finds are predictable or ineffective, and there are certain tracks which border on unlistenable - Uprising is one of the least captivating openers in recent rock history. Ambition is to be celebrated and admired, but Muse seem to be doing things for the sake of it, and The Resistance doesn't add up to any sort of cohesive whole, and there are very few moments that come close to anything off Absolution or Origin. Poor.

| 2.5 average | Carmelo Camenzuli | September 19th 09 | Thought the album was a bit of a let down, cant really imagine them playing songs from this album live at wembley. A really weak album from a great band.

| 2.5 average | Charles Montgomery Burns | September 14th 09 | It had to happen, right? Muse finally release a below-standard album, that can be best described as a collection of tracks that mix their earlier Orgin/Absolution sound with the newfound poppier direction on Black Holes, with weaker results than before. Add to that that Bellamy rips off both Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody (United States of Eurasia) and his own New Born (Unnatural Selection), and you've already got a letdown album. The closing epic Exogenesis Symphony is promising, and indeed very pretty, but altogether not consistenly impressive. Muse's eventual downfall was inevitable.

| 2.0 poor | TheWaqman | September 11th 09 | This crap is so obnoxious it would make Freddie Mercury blush. In fact, I think I'm going to go listen to Queen right now. Muse used to have the obvious influence in them, but that's all it was. Now it's just evolved into full on ripoff. Similar to Coldplay echoing U2 with Viva La Vida (which was at least more enjoyable than this crap). Skip this crap and just watch them live. At least that's still good.

| 2.5 average | AliW1993 | September 9th 09 | For the first time, Muses ludicrousness has gone too far. It's all fine that they're continuing in the more accessible and poppy style of Black Holes And Revelations, but not when the songs simply arent good enough. The guitars (when they appear) have little impact, Bellamy's lyrics are irritating, and his vocal performance unremarkable. There arent any particually outstanding moments here, but there sure are some dreadful ones, like Undisclosed Desires, which is a poor attempt at chart friendly r&b, and I Belong To You, which is so bad it could be mistaken for a joke. Even the Exogenesis synphony falls flat, and unfortunately a handful of good songs aren't enough to redeem a hugely dissapointing album.

| 2.0 poor | kingmchris | September 20th 09 | Resistance shows what Muse is capable of with the last three irresistible tracks, a complete orchestra under the guidance of Matthew Bellamy's awesome vocal prowess. It is total ear candy, but why on earth would he turn the rest of the album into a misguided, piece of shit pop affair is beyond me.

| 2.5 average | mvdu | September 19th 09 | What were they doing putting three classical-influenced rock ballads at the end? They are not inspiring or enjoyable. Too much of the album is that way, though there are a trio of good rockers (the two that start the album and "Unnatural Selection"), and USOE is epic done right.

| 2.5 average | Adrian Hertzberg | September 18th 09 | What, exactly, are Muse resisting with this record? Not a slow decline into the mediocracy of mainstream rock, that's for sure. This is an epic fail of an attempt to produce an epic record.

| 4.5 superb | elbeast120 | September 17th 09 | I can't believe all the harsh response to this... this is NOT the worst Muse album to date. It's worlds better than Showbiz. Exogenesis is AMAZING...

| 2.5 average | gireviks | September 14th 09 | This album is a major dud. First off, there's a lack of any real rockers on this album, nothing like Hysteria, Stockholm Syndrome, Knights of Cydonia, Citizen Erased or Assassins. I love Muse, I expect them to write music from left field, but this album is just flat and unexciting. I think the only Muse album worse than this one is Showbiz.

| 2.5 average | Dan Paulmeno | September 12th 09 | Fuck you Muse, You blantanly rip-off Queen's concepts, Andrew Lloyd Webber's musical ideas, and even steal lyrics from a favorite band of mine Walter Meego. But yet you created a better album then the disappointing black holes. The resistance is actually pleasant to listen to and isn't really boring. Just try and be original for the next album please. I don't want to get phantom of the opera mixed up with muse ever again.

| 1.0 awful | neonSource | September 11th 09 | I simple cannot explain how anyone can listen to this guy's awful wailing and think that it's singing. The music is very middle of the road, a hundred other bands are doing exactly the same, heard it all before many times kind of stuff. The lyrics just come across as pretentious teenage nonsense. The single most detestable thing about this band is not the ludicrously over the top promotion and adulation from the sycophantic media but the fact that they actually seem to believe they have talent and come out with such pretentiousness.

| 4.5 superb | thegroove | September 11th 09 | First listen .. thought it was amazing .. second listen .. thought it was astounding .. It's a grower, that's for sure, so give it a couple of listens. More consistent than BHAR although nothing will top Knights of Cydonia as an album closer ( epic! ), and does not alternate constantly between hard rock and soft classical inspired every two tracks like Absolution. This album is consistent and the tracks blend in well once the album's sunked in.
Hard to compare to other albums, it has some of the best and not so great elements of previous records. At least it's better than The Cribs, Green Day and Kasabian's latest efforts.

| 3.0 good | Conor Mackie | September 9th 09 | Easily the worst Muse album to date. I can't see this growing on me any more than it has, and I'd even go so far as to say that a 3 is being VERY generous. Yes it has the Exogenesis suite and though pretentious it gets the job done and is certainly worth great praise, but on pretty much everything else they have gone from interesting to bland as hell.

| 2.5 average | Benjamin Fyffe | September 9th 09 | Uprising and Undisclosed Desires are my faves, the Exogenesis Symphony would've sounded better with James LaBrie on vocals. Bellamy's vocals on this album are really annoying actually. Hopefully it'll all grow on me

| 4.0 excellent | Tom Eccles | September 9th 09 | I was never too sure what this album would be for me...after one full listen from beginning to end, it seemed that some of the tracks seemed to drag on, except for the symphony, that was just epic on the first listen. My fifth listen, I notice more in the songs that I didn't notice before. This album is better than BHaR but still not as good as OoS or Absolution...but still, I never expected The Resistance to top those two, but it sure is a very very good album.

| 4.0 excellent | Tw1ster | September 9th 09 | First three songs released had me very pessimistic about this album. I listened to it in full and as soon as I finished Unnatural Selection, I was sure this wasn't going to be the disappointment I once thought it would be. By most standards, it is an amazing album, by Muse standards, just above average. Better than Blackholes imo

| 3.5 great | blabony | September 9th 09 | This album is nothing like what Muse have done before . It may seem too experimental and had too many ideas (( many of them actually works except for the R&B thing !)) , but I see this as a good thing and these guys are keeping it fresh . The guitar is not as dominant as before but still kills sometimes (( i.e. Unnatural Selection)) and the drums and base are better than ever . Exogenesis is amazing and totally live up to the hype (( can't describe it ... just listen to it !))
Bottom line : album is good .. not OoS good .. but still good.
Favorite tracks so far : Resistance , Unnatural Selection , I Belong To You , and Exogenesis
((these are some random thoughts after 3 listens ))

| 0.0 | Bryan Syminiuk | September 9th 09 | When I first listened to the 30 second clips on iTunes I almost laughed at what I heard. This does not sound sound like any other Muse album, to me at least. I had VERY low expectations for this record and it just so happens, I love it. Go figure. And yes... The 3 part suite Exogenesis is amazingly amazing.

| 3.0 good | Elijah A. | September 9th 09 | Seems like it has too many good ideas for one dis. Each idea seems only half hearted though, may take a few listens. Anyone looking for and OoS or Absolution influenced album may be disappointed. However, those who have enjoyed their more pop, electronic works may be pleasantly surprised. Sadly, gone are the fierce and catchy guitar riffs. This is perhaps the most disappointing aspect.

| 2.5 average | Andrew Stocker | September 8th 09 | This is arguably Muse's weakest album so far in their career. They've continued down the electro-pop path which they started on Black Holes and Revelations, but this time the majority of the tracks are just bland and not particularly catchy. There are some better-than-average tracks, but the high point is the eagerly awaited symphony, "Exogenesis," which closes the album in three parts. It saves the The Resistance from being a complete waste, but even still it is not nearly as interesting or ambitious as it could have been, and does not rank among their best work. Overall, this is a disappointing album and it makes you wonder if Muse is all out of ideas.

| 3.0 good | ADAMWD | September 8th 09 | Right there with Origin of Symmetry (Absolution is much better than OoS). With the exception of the very weak Uprising, it is in my opinion Muse's most complete and fulfilling album to date. Exogenesis is incredibly moving and if you aren't stirred by it, you couldn't possibly have a soul. It is the most ambitious, tear-jerking, beautiful song I have heard in a very long time.

| 4.5 superb | Elie | November 9th 09 | Muse latest album is pompous and epic at the same time, it is an album that only Muse can create, and it works!
It is their best album since Origin Of Symmetry. All the songs are well crafted and some are brilliant. It is an album that you want to listen again and again, without skipping any track. I give it four and a half stars.

| 3.5 great | has reached Super Saiyan 4 | September 28th 09 | C'mon guys, this is not terrible. Yes, it's not the Muse of old and yes, they are wearing their influences on their sleeves (Queen, U2) but they are not directly ripping them off. With The Resistance, Muse have constructed a meticulously detailed album with plenty of diversity. The opening track is straight up Muse, while tracks like Guiding Light and Undisclosed desires definitely have a U2 vibe (the latter also featuring a hip-hop beat and slap bass). MK Ultra and Unnatural Selecion hark back to Absolution/OoS era Muse and are highlights of the album. The only real let down here are the Exogenises tracks, which really just fizzle out and don't reach a satisfying climax, their worst album closer yet.

| 3.0 good | Scotty O. | September 10th 09 | ....What? Matt's vocals use to be godlike and the drums use to be really pounding and strong, the bass big and fuzzy...Muse used to make smart and fun music at the same time. Well...not anymore. The Resistance barely touches fun and replaces smart with goofy. Musicianship went down. Songwriting went down. The piano parts used to be intense and beautiful - they're now laughable and rare.
I can't name a single truly great track that stands out...but overall, the album is ok. I appreciate their...effort. I don't mind The Resistance being 'poppy' but I do mind it being dumb for the most part.
