This is possibly my favorite Progressive epic of all time, it's simply divine.

If any album sums up Dream Theater's career, it's this one. Nobody can doubt these guys have talent, and if you were going to use pick one song to show that, "A Change Of Seasons" is it. It's Dream Theater's best song, by a mile. 24 minutes long, veering from technical wankery (never overdone, unlike all their other songs) to genuine emotion; from focused, driving power to jokey, stumbling piano breaks. There's great melody, great playing, some great arranging. Hell, it was my favourite prog rock song of all time until I discovered X-Japan's "Art of Life".
And then they go and stick a load of tacky, lazy cover versions on the end.
This album could have been a classic, but once again, Dream Theater are their own worst enemies.

Rated 5 for the mammoth title track alone, definitely in the top 5 DT tracks of all time. Incredible musicianship, great melodies, beautiful atmosphere, and lots more which can't be described in words. Everyone shines on this track. Oh and you get a bunch of well played cover songs (all performed live) just so there aren't any complaints of a short DT release.

If it only had the title track, it'd be a perfect EP. The covers can be pretty long-winded and almost boring if you don't like or know the songs already, and even then you're better off listening to the originals, but at least they're quite well executed. Or it could just be that they look bad next to A Change of Seasons, probably the best song Dream Theater has ever done or will ever do; the perfect blend of all they stand for. "Another World" is the greatest moment of DT's career.

The title track may well be the band's best ever song - it's easily the best Portnoy has written. Stunningly written and composed it's a DT essential with one of Putrucci's best solos aswell. Though that is the only DT song on the album, the cover songs are all excewllent aswell, especially "The Big Medley" - a mix songs of Floyd, Queen, Genesis and more!rTop 3 Tracks: A Change of Seasons, The Big Medley, Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding.
