After the inconsistent effort that was The Top, The Cure return with a more consistent, more mature album in that same vein of new wave, poppy gothic rock that permeated the mid-80's for the band. The songs are better written this time around, with much of the neo-psychedelic influences being replaced by more tactful and fitting ideas, like the trumpet in "A Night Like This" or the pianos in both "Six Different Ways" and "The Baby Screams". Things are still upbeat, or at least moreso than usual, but never in an obnoxious manner. And yet, one cannot escape the notion that the best tracks on this album are the ones that play it straight, and the opening combo of "In Between Days" and "Kyoto Song" back this up strongly. So too does album closer "Sinking", which is one of the more underrated tracks in their discography. All around, it's an improvement on what they were going for with The Top, but it's not quite at the heights of their classic material.

A lighter, more commercial effort by the Cure that is musically adventurous and diverse enough to keep the listener interested. Despite the hooky guitar riffs and more slick sound, this album never falls into complete commercial glossiness.

'The Head On The Door' is easily one of most accomplished and enjoyable albums the band ever produced. It's refreshing and consistent; pleasantly familiar at times, but excitingly experimental at others and alternative, yet hooky enough to be immediately catchy. Robert Smith penned some of his sharpest lyrics here and, with a full band that was sorely missed since Gallup's departure, some of his strongest melodies too. The full band setting helped usher in rejuvenation for a group whose future appeared to be hanging by a thread, a year previous, and to top it all off, singles like 'Inbetween Days' managed to make headway in popularising the band outside of their home turf; just scrapping into the Billboard Hot 100 at #99. To put it simply; with 'The Head On The Door', The Cure reached heady heights indeed.
