Metal died in 1993. Only 12 good albums have been released since then (most of them in 1994, being already recorded by 1993). Metal achieved its creative peak in albums like Onward to Golgotha, Pure Holocaust, and The Red in the Sky is Ours, elevating the genre into a legitimate art form. Now, thanks to Slaughter of the Soul and Gojira, all its potential was squandered and the genre has been reduced into being mere gimmick ridden noise for drunk idiots (i.e. the lowest common denominator - stop trying to turn underground metal into AC/DC).

I dont even know if I can give this a solid 3. It's their worst album bar none, The Chant is a god awful song. The album just leaked and I already want a REMIX of the production. It sounds muddy and really compressed. This album is a big fat no thanks IMO. 2.7/5 rating from me.

You know for a groove metal band, Gojira never really groove. I've always felt that Gojira's riffs are very stiff, it's like they've been learning the wrong lessons from Morbid Angel for their entire career, so it's nice that Fortitude loosens up their sound. Shame that most of the songwriting here is kinda bland, especially the choruses. Magma had the right blend of bludgeoning riffs and radio hooks, this leans more on the latter but the hooks lack the impact they had on Magma.

I picked up the vinyl at my local record store yesterday. 2.5 weeks early... uhh....
Anyway, I would say this is on a similar level as Magma in that it is not nearly as
dynamic as their previous works. Pretty straight forward, pounding riffs. Born for One
Thing, Another World, and Grind are my favorites as of now. Fortitude > The Chant is a
real low point for the band. It wants to be The Shooting Star.

Often when bands experience a lack of creativity and innovation, they come up with something like this. They try to artificially evolve their sound, compose catchy riffs, but all of it feels unnatural. The album is monotonous and I got tired of it by the end of it. Nevertheless, this one has some attractive songs that I maybe would like to re-listen one day, but definitely not now.

A misstep in almost every possible way. The production is muddy, the riffs aren't as enthralling as the band has accustomed us to, Joe Duplantier's clean vocals are more reminiscent of 90s metal than Gojira, and the songs simply aren't that good. Some passages do testify that the band still got dem chops ("New Found", "Into the Storm", "Another World") but they lack a proper mix to give them the required impact.

The only track so far that I just don't get is The Chant. Mostly everything else here works well and is a banger but yeah The Chant is probably their one real dud and gives me Metallica/Load & Reload PTSD vibes.

Some of these tracks could be, in some ways, considered Gojira's best tracks, in terms of instrumental expressivity and overall progression for their sound. And then there're tracks that don't really ask for a replay, which is unfortunate because I really care about the Amazon forest burning, but I almost never want to listen to the song about it. Song-writing doesn't feel as monumental as their other efforts. Hopefully the next effort improves on what this album does.

Really enjoyable continuation for these guys. I liked the experimentation, especially on Amazonia but also the use of clean vocals. For me though it was the heavier tracks that I gravitated to, album closer Grind being a particular highlight alongside lead single Another World.

Overall really well done if not a bit too slow paced for my taste. Grind, Born For One Thing and Into the Storm are what I prefer my Gojira to be. However, besides Fortitude/The Chant, most of the tracks here land.

Struggled to decide between 3.5 and a 4 for this. But I see this is a huge improvement over Magma and most of the tracks are solid if not dragged on a bit and we're still using fade outs in the era, fuck me. Fortitude and The Chant are awful, funny they named the album off of one, jeez.
