| 1.5 very poor | Nathaniel Fritz | May 8th 09 | In retrospect, taking the worst parts of American Idiot, coupling that with mediocre arena rock, and then dragging all of that out for 70 goddamn minutes probably wasn't the smartest idea.

| 2.0 poor | Adam Downer STAFF | May 12th 09 | 21st Century Breakdown expands upon American Idiot in almost every way imaginable. It?s bigger, more ambitious, and somehow more conceptually vague/ridiculous than American Idiot (seriously). This time around, Green Day discard anything resembling subtlety, which is not to say that subtlety was ever their forte. It is to say, however, that listening to 21st Century Breakdown in its entirety is an experience comparable to masturbating multiple times in succession. Every corner of the album is laden with production gimmicks and song constructions that make it clear that Green Day wanted to make 21st Century Breakdown the most epic experience ever ever ever and to their credit, there sure are anthems abound in these eighteen tracks of driving power chords and soaring harmonies. But rhyming ?fighting for? and ?dying for? can only be inspiring so many times before sounding trite, and 21st Century Breakdown spirals out of control in its own heroic glory and never regains focus, thus ending with a product that Green Day couldn?t afford to produce: an average record.

But this is just a rehash of those ideas, building on the popularity of the album, yet failing to capture the same feeling and just ends up as nothing more than a pretentious and over-long attempt at writing an American Idiot 2.

| 1.0 awful | Crowe | August 2nd 11 | 21st Century Breakdown for Green Day is kind of what happened to Radiohead earlier this year in 2011 with shit-fest King of the Limbs: 'Oh hey, guys, we're important. So let's just do what made us popular before without any effort because shit's easy and we're Green Day'. Sorry, Mr. Armstrong, but throwing American Idiot 2.0 to us with melodies recycled from your past albums, particularly Warning, does not make good music. Jesus Christ, music's leading rock musicians need to get their heads out of their asses. This is shit.

| 4.0 excellent | foofighterfan101 | October 26th 09 | Green Day's "21st Century Breakdown" was their eighth attempt and they succeeded at making the album superb.
1. Song Of The Century:
The most boring song on the album because it was just a talking intro. 1/5
2. 21st Century Breakdown:
Great song, quite similar to "Bohemian Rhapsody". The song includes a catchy riff and some awesome vocals from Billie Joe. 4/5
3. Know Your Enemy:
Quite catchy, but not the best on the album, the chant "Do you know the enemy?" sticks in your head, but the song could have been somewhat better musically. 3.5/5
4. Viva La Gloria!:
Not as good as "Viva La Gloria?" but a nice attempt. 3.5/5
5. Before The Lobotomy:
One of the best on the album, it starts out slow and turns into a masterpiece by the end of its 4 minute 37 second run time! 4.5/5
6. Christian's Inferno:
A great fast song. That really sums it up. 4/5
7. Last Night On Earth:
Quite average, but is a nice and easy musical listen. 3.5/5
8. East jesus Nowhere:
One of the best on the album and one of Green Day's best songs. 5/5
9. Peacemaker:
Different musically but awesome. Nice and catchy. 4.5/5
10. Last Of The American Girls:
Not brilliant but it is alright for a listen. 3/5
11. Murder City:
Great song, a lot better than some on the album. 4.5/5
12. ?Viva La Gloria?:
Great piano, great bass, great guitar, great drums, great vocals. An awesome song. 5/5
13. Restless Heart Syndrome:
Nice soft song, which turns out to be another great song. 3.5/5
14. Horseshoes and Handgrenades:
"I'm not ****ing around!" What a song, I mean from the first ten seconds you know it's gonna be awesome, and awesome it was. The most explicit. 5/5
15. The Static Age:
Nice song, quite catchy and it is worth a good listen. 4/5
16. 21 Guns:
Great song musically and great song lyrically. It is one of the softer songs but brings a nice feeling to the album. 4.5/5
17. American Eulogy:
Ok, like "See the light", it is not brilliant but it is ok. 2.5/5
18. See the light:
Ok, like "American Eulogy", it is an ok attempt. 3/5
Best songs:
Horseshoes and handgrenades
?Viva La Gloria?
East Jesus Nowhere
Peacemaker
Before the Lobotomy

| 4.5 superb | amrito92 | May 20th 09 | I just dont get it.. this album is brilliant. Green Day has refined their sound even more from American Idiot (which was great too) but this is even better. I love how they explore new and interesting styles and use symphonic sounds and stuff while still playing it in their punk style. They ought to be rewarded for such a such an inspirational epic album.
Out of a generous 18 songs, theres not a single filler imo. You can hear the solid effort put in each and every song, and it sure works!
Go Green Day!

| 4.5 superb | Hex0spectrum | May 18th 09 | I simply can't agree with this review, overall I think this album is fantastic, the only complaint I can possibly think of is that it is slightly cheesy in parts. The song 'Peacemaker' is indeed entertaining as you said but I can't believe you mentioned 'Christian's Inferno' among the better songs, in my opinion that is the worst song on the album.
'Murder City' and 'Peacemaker' are my two favourite songs from the album.

| 4.0 excellent | greensox533 | May 13th 09 | I recall the first time I heard American Idiot, and how it completely changed my musical tastes. While the plot of this album may be absolutely confusing, and ridiculous, the bass-lines are copied off of older GD songs, and while I agree with you that the lyrics are sometimes absolutely WTF, the album is a musical experiance. I'm not saying that the album is one of the best albums that I've ever heard, neither was American Idiot, but this album has a certain punch that AI didn't. This album shows GD at least trying to show maturity, which they didn't fully succeed at. By far, the best song on first listen on the album is "See The Light," an almost poppy, but extremely passionate, catchy, and energetic song. GD has lost its sense of direction in this album, but maybe this is just a stepping stone towards something better.

| 3.0 good | Mark Campbell | May 9th 09 | They're not getting a free pass on this one. Whereas American Idiot was a fresh new take on the Green Day sound (for the most part), this record takes BJ Armstrong's obsession with The Who just a little too far. The consistency is simply not there and while the melodies and songwriting are all pretty standard-issue Green Day (i.e., catchy and fun), there's no musical substance underneath the proceedings. And come on, 18 songs of three-chord jams? They could have taken six off and it would have been much better in the end. And wtf is with these lyrics? Armstrong was never a literary wordsmith but these are TOYPAJ blink-era bad, if not worse. Overall, not shit but certainly GD's weakest album in a long time.

| 0.0 | ASnideRemark | March 12th 12 | With disjointed lyrical concepts, recycled riffs and boring instrumentation, Green Day provide nothing new with this release and instead attempt to recreate what made their previous albums successful by simply going through the motions, which has resulted in a mediocre effort.

| 2.0 poor | BeamMeUpScotty | March 10th 12 | 21st Century Breakdown was a terrible disappointment; we have a pile of terrible lyrics in one corner and a berated and recycled look in the other. American Idiot is their Everest and they've far from tackled it with this follow up. I genuinely feel as though American Idiot was their last true 'Hurrah!' and from now on it's all looking to be three tired old men (and poor Jason White) working to retirement, not with a bang but with a whimper for poor 'ole Green Day ahead of us. With their new Album on the way this will either be conformed or, let's hope for it, a denied future for these guys. As a fan I really, honestly don't want this to happen to one of my favourite bands, but it can't be denied that it's definitely looking to be going that way for them.

| 3.0 good | pink1995floyd | February 7th 12 | 21st century breakdown is ok no more no less, the music on the album isn't bad but several of the songs have a very similar sound which can make the album drag and seem longer than it is. Billie Joes lyrics are at times very obscure and this makes the story of the album is very hard to follow (but you don't have to take the story too seriously) The album is too long as well, it should have been 50-55 mins max not the 69 mins it was stretched to. Definitely not worth the 5 year wait and nowhere near as good as american idiot.

| 2.5 average | DJSchraubenzieh | December 5th 11 | A very interesting record. Green Day obviously tried to do something epic, something glorious here. But what it turned out to be is nothing too interesting, since everything is so overproduced and poppy. rWhile there are a few pretty good songs, such as "Peacemaker" or "Static Age", the overall mediocrity and "epicness" make the album uninteresting and boring.

| 3.5 great | SilverandBlack5 | August 11th 11 | Green Day will always be one of my favorite bands, even as their music changes. A lot of people out there think that the changes they have made have been nothing but detrimental to their classic sound. I agree, but only to an extent. If you listened to Green Day in the past for nothing but their signature punk sound, you will hate the new stuff beyond belief. But "21st Century Breakdown" is simply a step in the perfect direction referring to music. Their old stuff was a great listen, sure. But was it fantastic MUSIC? Or did it just sound really good? I think choice 2 is the real answer. With this album, those old punk roots are pretty much gone (with the exception of a few songs here and there), but Green Day has shown that they are more than just punks. They are very talented musicians. This album exhibits exactly that. It's not something that a closed-minded Green Day fan will like. But as a lover of music in general, this new material is definitely above-average. Some songs kind of suck in all honesty, but for the most part, Green Day is headed in the right direction and will continue to grow as a group for a while.

| 2.5 average | Frozenpostal | August 1st 11 | The only two songs that seemed original to me were viva la gloria and 21 guns. Those two songs are decent and id give them a 4. However the rest of this album isn't anything to be proud of. It sounds like nothing all that new or interesting. A bitter dissapointment to me since American Idiot is one of my favourite albums of all time. Every album follow up before this had some aspect of furthering their sound. This album they didn't.

| 3.0 good | 140560 | May 29th 11 | 21st Century Breakdown was a great album. They got their message across, like they usually do, and they did it in a pretty great way. In the album, Green day incorporated some good fast tempo songs like, ¿Viva La Gloria? (Little Girl), See the Light, and Christian Inferno; and then they slowed it down with 21 Guns. I thought the album had good lyrics and good rhythm and beat. I would say that they became a little repetitive; for example, 21st Century Breakdown, See the Light, and ¡Viva La Gloria!. Now don't get me wrong, I love these songs; i love the soft intro, and the transition into a fast pace verse/chorus; but I felt like I heard that same format multiple times. I would have liked to here a different arrangement in the songs with some of the other songs in the album. To add on to that, I feel that this album was a great alternative/pop rock album. But if you remember the 1994 album that sold over 15 million copies worldwide, Dookie, and the 1995 album that sold over 8 million copies worldwide, Insomniac; these albums supplied an awesome variety of great Green Day punk rock music. Some of my favorite songs from these albums, and favorite songs overall, are Basket Case, Sassafras roots, She, Brain Stew, Jaded, and Westbound Sign. And with 21st Century Breakdown selling 3.5 million copies worldwide, you can see the comparison. All of these songs represent what punk rock is. In conclusion of that, I would say that Green day slowed down their tempo, and transferred into more of some rock/alternative/pop music, which I do love. I would just like to see some more punk rock, and here some more of the classic, blonde, green, and blue haired punk rock Green Day music.

| 3.0 good | HankMcCoy22 | June 10th 10 | The resounding feature of this album is that it's catchy. The musical cliche's are rampant. Progressions that have been used a million times have been incorporated into punk and it works moderately well. A listen through is actually quite comfortable. The problem with this is that the album sounds like something close to an attempt at something large. It doesn't sound natural but rather deliberate. There's so many different things going on here that it just seems too haphazard and random to be any good. But it's a comfortable listen and shows once again that Green Day are completely unoriginal in their songwriting attempts and are falling into the trap of writing commercially acceptable melodies.
Best Track: East Jesus Nowhere.

| 1.0 awful | Brien C. Stevenson | May 20th 09 | Well, let us prepare for the radio-onslaught this album will bring. That being said, this album wasn't actually as bad as I was expecting it to be. It's still not good, just not 100% terrible. These guys definitely have their formula down, still writing catchy little hooks that'll set deep into their awaiting fanbase. Don't let this fool you, however, as this is virtually the same thing they've already pulled on with their listeners. While I can give them slight credit for trying the rock-opera thing, they're simply rehasing their own ideas, actually ripping themselves off in the process. There are a couple songs that are maybe worth two or three plays, but for the general intelligent music fan, there isn't a whole lot here to warrant all its hype.
