| 4.5 superb | Kit Brown | March 17th 09 | Imagine if Mastodon took the strongest elements of "Sleeping Giant", "Hearts Alive", and "Pendulous Skin" and made an entire album out of them. Add a terrific (and crushing) vocal performance from Neurosis' Scott Kelly, improved clean vocals from both Troy and Brent, and an overall knack for combining thinking-man's metal with catchy hooks simultaneously. In short, Crack the Skye isn't something you should miss. Inevitably one of the strongest metal releases of the year.

| 2.3 average | Sobhi Youssef STAFF | March 17th 09 | Imagine if Mastodon continued in the direction of Blood Mountain, with a completely worthless concept, Dream Theater posturing, and a sound that completely lacks cohesion. There are at least 3 sludge/ post metal albums from March you could be listening to instead (namely Zoroaster, Kylesa, and Buried Inside). This is seriously mediocre, lacks a truly heavy punch, and is a complete disappointment coming all the way from Leviathan.

| 3.5 great | Thats A Clown Question Bro CONTRIBUTOR | March 22nd 09 | Mastodon returns in 2009 with a zazzy affair. There are two kinds of records, those with and those without zazz. Fortunately, Mastodon recognizes the need for zazz and fufills the zazzieness wiht unabashed zazz. Whereas Blood Mountain lacked zazz, Crack The Skye put the music on the zazz train to zazzville. Zazzy riffs and vocals combine with a zazzy rythmn section bolstered by zazzy songwriting. Overall, Crack The Skye is an incredibly zazzy event, a fantastic star studded evening of zazz if you will.

Why on earth is this a 5? Explanation beginning. I listened first time. It sounded boring. Wat. This is mastodon. I expected better things. I listened again. it sounded better. I listened third time. Wow. I was amazed. My brother listened two. He thought it was some music. Me and him both thought they made good use of they're instrumints. The guitar player had good notes and chords. The drummer played random stuff and i liked that. The bass player. My only problem with this cd is that when i downloaded it i did not get the last track but i bet i al ready know this albumi s 5/5 I reccommend this album to anyone who like heavy music to listen too when they play playstation or xbox.
My brother he listens to this too whenever i play it. my Brother is the my best friend. the end.

| 3.5 great | Jake C. Taylor CONTRIBUTOR | March 30th 09 | Imagine if! No that would just be too easy! Imagination and this album come in two forms; allies and enemies. There's enough material on here to say this album succeeds; good song writing, effortless melodic and rhythmic structure, dimensional vocal devlivery; but it fails to add another limb to the Mastodon itself. So far it would be safe to say it has about three. So crippled and limping along, yet still with great power and enegry, this Mastodon still packs enough grunt to turn heads, especially those who are just escaping their bad music teen years. An album that will polarise a few more Remission and Levithan fanatics, but an album that works all the same, and that's all that matters.

| 4.0 excellent | Freddy Thomas | March 17th 09 | All I can say at this moment is wow, Mastodon really outdid themselves on this. They showed their true raw & emotional power as musicians in this 50-minute opus. The music & production is flawless & perfect, for the first time in a long time have I failed to find a fault with an album in anyway, that just shows the significance of it. If the word "Epic" was made for one album, this one would be a contender to hold that title, because this album is epic, no question

| 4.5 superb | Islandjam2990 | January 30th 10 | I don't understand how people are giving this album a 2 or 3. After albums like "Blood Mountain" and "Leviathan", this was a complete and utter breakthrough in song writing and technicality. It was really cool to see this band go from thrash-type music to an all out musical extravaganza. I, for one, loved this album. I felt like it was very well thought out, experimental for them, and the concept was original. Even if you didn't like this, it definitely deserves more than just a 2 or 3.

| 2.5 average | longlivemetal | June 24th 09 | As a metal album, I don't like it.
As a prog album it's quite good but nothing really special. The intro to Oblivion sounds very similar to Weltschmerz the opening track on Napalm Death's Smear Campaign. Some of the guitar could have been lifted strait from a Fall of Troy song.
So the thing is, if it's prog, it should be progressive, and it can't be when I listen to it and immediatly associate it's sound to other bands.
As a metal album, no. Don't think of this as a Mastodon album, it's like when Neil Young brought out that techno album. There no longer competing with the likes of Metallica and Slayer, more along the lines of Muse or Tool.
Regular people will love it, but some fans won't understand why they have brought out an album like this others like myself will find themselves in a state of ambivalence.
To me this is the equivalent of Mastodons Black album.

| 4.0 excellent | Motiv3 | May 17th 09 | Before this record i didnt listen to any other Mastodon records, but from the impression i get from the reviews and other people, this is a band ever evolving and continuing to evolve, this is fantastic album overall minus the beginning of Czar which bored me, but the rest of the song made up for it. This could end up being one of the stronger releases this year. I better go check out Mastodons other stuff!

| 1.5 very poor | kbjohnso | March 26th 09 | What a dissapointment. I am crying. Mastodon has completely lost their balls on this one. What a sad sad day this is. Where has the adrenaline gone? Where has Troy's thundering voice gone? Sorry boys, you're heading down the sad pathetic path that bands like Metallica went down in the early nineties that inevitably leads to fans abandoning them. View the Mother Puncher (LIVE) video on You Tube, if you want to see what Mastodon "Once" was... Goodbye Mastodon. Rest in Peace. I'm outta here.

| 4.0 excellent | robthompson | December 25th 12 | Mastodon are well named. This release is huge and relentless once it gets going. But unlike the animal, on the basis of this album Mastodon aren't heading for extinction. I think this is another concept album? I read interviews with the band where they attempted to describe the story presented here: something about a experimentation with astral travel, meeting Rasputin, wormholes, etc. I'm not sure. But to be honest this is a leap forward in terms of its sheer inventiveness and brutality. It's an uncompromising release which hits hard with its meandering mid-tempo epics. A progressive, heavy, sludgy masterpiece.

| 4.5 superb | Tyson | July 24th 12 | Mastodon manages to maintain their identity of sludge metal while improving their song structure and experimenting (largely) with progressive metal, which creates an interesting atmosphere. Considering the intensity of some of their songs on the album (especially on the title track 'Crack The Skye') It really creates a darkened mood. Despite all the positives, it still falls just short of Leviathan in terms of production and Brann's drumming is slightly more predictable on this album. Although there's minor flaws, this is a must-have for any Mastodon fan.

| 0.0 | CaptainSpacker | July 19th 11 | I have a beef with “nu-metal”. For me metal was always big, scary and complex. Songs shouldn’t be less than 5 minutes, the bass and drums ought to evoke Satan hammering on your door and the lyrics should soar effortlessly above the rest, only met on occasion by screeching solos every 3 minutes. And under no circumstance must anyone even attempt to be “gangsta”. In short I’m a devout follower of the Sabbath and Metallica models.
The problem with this is it can get boring, you cover the same ground. For this reason I forgive the music industry for its two decades of catchy chorus and grown men in dress up. Mastodon blew this situation away however on Crack the Skye. Variety is on full show here; “Oblivion” starts with a haunting, spacey synth intro. “Divinations” kicks off with rumbling banjo. Single tracks morph and change direction frequently.
The real impressive feat though is how good everyone is. The vocals are spot on, constant melodies; I still don’t know who exactly was on lead for this album. The two guitars fuzz and dance, the bass skips here and there, on the aforementioned “Divinations” all instruments gun it for a mad crescendo, which impossible holds together. Prog comes to mind very much, I’d compare their sound to recent Metallica with Sabbath. This isn’t thrash, Crack the Skye is much more focused on atmosphere and depth than moshing.
The themes have been updated too. Fantasy and the occult has been a metal staple since Zeppelin, todays it’s space and time travel. There is some kind of concept of a time travelling astronaut warning an occult of the Russian revolution or something, but all you really need to know is this is a trip album.
I’d recommend this to even non-metal fans, it’s an excellent example of the genre very much misunderstood by the mainstream. This and the Black Album should atleast be able to convert non-believers to appreciators.

| 4.5 superb | JimMatheos | November 10th 10 | My choice for the best 2009 album. The main reason is obvious. They jump from alternative to progressive metal in a completely natural way and that is a feast for people who share love with Tool, Metallica, The Mars Volta, System of a Down or even King Crimson and Dream Theater. I really appreciate they effort to make a lap forward in their career keeping they classic metal sound, including growls, dirty guitars & battle drums, with the new exciting vocal range. Blood Mountian was a "straigh to your head" album. You didn't need many tastes to enjoy it. It was metal injected to your blood without anaesthesia. Crack the Skye is more like a journey to unkowned and stranger lands. Few alternative rock bands can risk their reputation writing stuff (lyrics included) so pretentious as Quientessence, The Cszar, Ghost of Karelia and The Last Baron and improve. This magnus opus proves progressive rock is not yet a museum piece. And last but not least I wanna congratulate them for the incredible work in the special edition cd (art, making of, etc.). I admit I first downloaded the album but after one listening I needed to buy it... in a compulsive way!

| 4.5 superb | Martine Balcaen | September 23rd 10 | mastodon's made an astonishingly focused record. no overblown sludge metal gimmick, no progressive rock fretboard wankery. it's a ton more concise than blood mountain and it's pretty clear that a good chunk of their energy was put into getting all their key elements to click perfectly (oh, it worked alright). it is the stuff of legend. crack the skye get increasingly more appealing as it progresses and continually shows us that mastodon is not just the world's passing sludge metal phase, but is definately going to cement itself as the stuff that influences future bands of the genre.

Because it puts you right there, you really feel like you are experiencing everything that is going on in the album. It is mind-blowingly, earth-shatteringly epic in ways that would make Opeth bow to their knees. Sometimes you feel likeyou are being chased by a wrathful god, sometimes you feel like you're in the middle of the storm of the century, sometimes you feel like you're traveling through a wormhole or space, sometimes it feels like a sorceror is conjuring a massive spell, sometimes it feels like the entire Russian Army is marching after you...Oh, what the hell! | 2.5 average | Aziz CONTRIBUTOR | November 23rd 09 | The album certainly isn't dense enough for me to be even considering the possibility of a premature judgment. So then, why did Crack the Skye leave me disappointed?
Though the album has some standout tracks riddled with layers of fun guitar work, the rest of the album left much to be desired. At least half of the album was extremely tedious to listen to, and at times it just seemed like too long and unnecessary. Despite all this, the first few tracks are great, and the title track is host to the best vocal performance on the album. Definitely worth listening to, but not as great as everyone expected it to be. Crack the Skye is a solid release at best.

| 4.5 superb | rumpusaurus | March 19th 09 | This is by far the greatest Mastodon album that has ever been released. As far as songwriting, this is in my opinion a huge step up from Blood Mountain, and I'm kind of liking the story, simply because it is getting a much spacier, and overall epic, but also darker sound. Also, the metaphors in Crack The Skye that relate to both the story and the suicide of Dailor's sister were very unexpected, because this is the first time I have seen a meaningful Mastodon lyric inspired by something meaningful that happened to them. Overall, fantastic album, and the people who say this is not as heavy are correct, it is in fact more melodic, but also feels darker and more serious, which I find much better that previous Mastodon music.
Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | Spencer Watkins | March 19th 09 | Listened to the MySpace stream. Agree that the album can drone on in parts, especially after the one-two punch of "Oblivion" and "Divinations" that makes "Quintessence" sound like a leftover from Blood mountain with cleaner vocals.
Getting past the middle of the album, I can't emphasize how much "The Last Baron" is in contention for the "White Walls" of 2009. This is an intense metal-prog-who gives a f*ck album that Mastodon should be incredibly proud of creating. Anyone else think that the intro the "The Czar" sounds a bit like Led Zep's "No Quarter"?

| 4.0 excellent | Mark Campbell | March 18th 09 | ZOMG this album doesn't own, it rapes your soul! And stuff. To be honest, this is probably Mastodon's most cohesive album yet. The hooks are better than ever, Brann lays back just enough to let everyone else shine a bit more, and both guitarists have stepped the game up considerably with some quite awesome guitar solos. Buuuuuuuuut the vocals still suck 50% of the time, the concept is incredibly mind-numbingly retarded (I mean seriously read the excerpt from Brann Dailor on Wikipedia), and some of the songs go a little too far up their own asses. Otherwise, solid, kick-ass metal record but there's no way in hell this is 2009's Traced In Air as there's no comparison to that record.

From the rather startling vocal changes in "Oblivion" to the underlying crunch of "Crack The Skye", to the ethereal guitar notes that resemble "Pendulous Skin" in "Ghost of Karelia", it's an album of ambition, and may bring them closer to Pink Floyd than ever before.
