4.0 excellent | Blazewire | November 1st 20 | Abyss is a fantastic follow up to Apex and continuation of the concept started there. But it is hard to compare the albums as they have different styles. Abyss is more synth driven which reflects the retro sci fi content of the concept. The album is also a grower, it takes a few listens for everything to click and sink in, but I then found myself returning for more multiple listens. These guys have a great mix of power metal, traditional heavy metal with influences from melodic death metal and progressive metal. The track Legacy in particular sounds like something Devin Townsend might put out, in a good way! The midsection of the album from Legacy to Faster Than Light is outstanding! The only slight issue being the pacing, we get the epic The Wind That Shapes the Land which feels like an album closer... but it then goes on for an extra 2 tracks. Although not bad songs, they don't quite live up to the epic conclusion. I guess they are the end credits/epilogue of this story. Tracks to check out: Soulbound, Faster Than Light (the DragonForce feeling song), and Abyss.

1.0 awful | YellowVoid | September 7th 20 | The musicianship and composition is top-notch. However, the vocals are too prominent in the mix. It doesn't help that her vocal timbre sits in a frequency that the ear is sensitive to. She also yells around the same pitch for the entirety of the album. She doesn't display much of a vocal range often, which isn't to say that she doesn't have it. This combination leaves you with a headache, after you've felt like someone has been yelling in your ear for 57 minutes. The male vocals that enter on the song "Carry the Flame" are a relief to the ears. Now, it's time to go take some Tylenol.

3.5 great | Puckingham | August 26th 20 | More of a rollercoaster ride than Apex was, but they got a few fuckin bangers on here. only one or two songs out of the album aren?t top notch, may bump to a 4 if it stays in my rotation for a while.

4.5 superb | chilledpunkrock | August 25th 20 | I don't even like power metal but this thing is absolutely incredible regardless. Fantastic songwriting, singing, playing, it's all here and it's all stellar.

4.5 superb | PortalofPerfection | August 21st 20 | Rocks the fucking house. Love the overall shorter track lengths and better use of synth. Riffs and solos are better, songwriting more engaging. And of course Brittany Slays. Their best album to date and a new standard for modern power metal. r4.3
