3.0 good | Thor | June 24th 09 | Dream Theater returns with their umpteenth effort, The Bleakest Future. Mike Portnoy plays the drums mega fast and destroys your eardrums with gut-fucking brutal vocals. Everyone else in the band is fucking nutz. They constantly attack with stunning musical imagery coupled with overwhelming technicality. When I heard the first track, called “Overcome With Nightmarish Chug,” I rushed to the kitchen where my mom was making the macaroni and cheese I had ordered her to make twenty minutes earlier, snatched the pot of boiling water from the stainless-steel stove, and threw it into the dining room. My mom said that I needed to respect her more and I told her I wouldn’t until she could shred harder than John Petrucci, which will never happen, because NO ONE can. The most novel aspect of the Dream Theaters music is the subtle flourishes of soca and rhythm and blues that they have adopted. John Myung plays the bass guitar much like a soulful black man would strum on a box outside on a porch in those grand plantation days. He doesn’t sound like that awkward Asian person you see playing the bass. The most progressive musical outfit since Rush, the most aggressive since Nile, the wisest since Slayer, Dream Theater will come at you like a crazy train and run you over and make smush out of your fucking soul.

4.0 excellent | Altmer | May 19th 09 | Dream Theater have an obsession with being m34tl now, as the first song features blastbeats and semi-growls from Mike Portnoy. Fortunately for them, they don't completely suck at it (some of the instrumental passages are long, but most of them work in context). Overall this is a pretty good return to form, as the instrumental part of this album is sick, amazing, and over-the-top wicked. James also sounds better than ever. The only downside, apart from some of the overlong solos, are that the lyrics are getting banal and annoying. Also massive props for the cool Trial of Tears section in the Count of Tuscany.

0.0 | DocSportello | May 26th 09 | Look no further for the inner clockwork of the colossal machine known as Dream Theater. Here it is in its most representative state: churning, sprawling, epic music that's so expertly crafted that its ultimately contrived nature drains any joy or emotion from its core. With "Black Clouds and Silver Linings" the band dropped the godawful sci-fi lyrics found in "Systematic Chaos" in favor lyrics recounting personal experiences...and the failure here is incalculable. LaBrie never sounds like he really cares. And when the music is already a plug on the musical bathtub, a half-assed singer can really kill the mood. "Wither" is the only truly bearable cut here, as it is never bogged down by senseless, thoughtless wankery. Tellingly, however, "Wither" is about writers' block - or a lack of inspiration - revealing that Dream Theater is at its best when it admits its blatant flaws head on. Speaking of admission, Mike Portnoy's final movement in his mega-pretentious Alcoholics Anonymous suite, "The Shattered Fortress" is simply a bogged-down rehashing of riffs from past albums...and sadly, these riffs are the best in the album. And they're not original at all. All I can say is that halfway through this record, I asked myself: "How can any music be good?" I don't think this is a good thing, if it seems that a band is single-handedly killing music one formulaic album at a time.

4.0 excellent | AlexTM510 | June 1st 09 | Dream Theater made another album full of their typical epic-ness (and the extra cheese to go with it). However in a returning shock they have made one of their most balanced albums yet that pretty much rules hard. Throughout the 6 epic songs, the album flows cohesively and doesn't bore for a moment. The album shows that while Dream Theater does still run on their old tricks, they still know how to push their sound continuously and remain to be one of the today's best progressive metal bands.

4.0 excellent | Corde64 | March 30th 16 | Amazing album, but really what stands out the most from this one is "The Count of Tuscany". It's very hard to make a list of favorite songs if you listen to new music often enough to have a gigantic amount of songs you really love, I'd say it's maybe impossible. But "The Count of Tuscany" is probably on my top 10 favorite songs ever.

4.5 superb | MaidenUFO | August 20th 12 | By far the most underrated DT album...This album has such unique and amazing songs like "A nightmare to remember", "wither", "the count of Tuscany" and especially "The best of times" a nostalgic masterpiece written by Mike Portnoy for his father's death...

4.5 superb | Zilla2112 | June 15th 12 | Call me crazy, but this might be Dream Theater's best album. Unlike most of their other albums, in which there is at least one weak song, the entirety of 'Black Cloud & Silver Linings' is fantastic. From the epic "A Nightmare to Remember" to the beautiful "The Best of Times" to the perfect closer "The Count of Tuscany", 'Black Clouds & Silver Linings' is the final and best album by the definitive Dream Theater lineup. Check out: The whole thing.

5.0 classic | CamiloGallego | June 24th 09 | This album its an awesome aproach to what we the DT fans want, it might not be pefect, but it's completly awesome, a perfect example of this are songs like the best of times, the shattered fortress or the count of tuscany, they are three epic exampes of why this album is a conemporary classic

3.0 good | AlecJankewich | May 8th 09 | Why do you rate it if it's not out yet? I mean, you have to listen to the whole thing before rating it! I know that some songs are out now, but not the whole album! Cant you just wait and listen to the whole thing?

4.0 excellent | Shredzilla | June 26th 09 | After disappointing many of their closest fans with their somewhat lacking release, Systematic Chaos (I still found it to be a pretty good album. Would have been better if "Forsaken" was taken out), Dream Theater have returned with their newest release, Black Clouds and Silver Linings. While the album is definitely not the best DT have released, it still is certainly a top notch album by the group. They certainly do not hold back. In fact, their Metal influences have certainly grown since the last album, with blast beats even making an appearance! However, it never sounds out of place and the album flows well. Many of the songs are very long (most over 12 minutes in length), but that's what DT do, and they do it wonderfully. This fantastic release should not make any DT fan unhappy.

2.0 poor | Jim | June 10th 09 | What an entirely unremarkable effort from a once exciting group. This may be a step up from Systematic Chaos, but the ideas on this record and execution of them by these well-known masters of "progressive" metal are tired and misguided, judging by Portnoy's constant reminders of everything being heavier and longer. I don't want longer songs or crunchier riffs - I want Images and Words pt2.

4.0 excellent | Nauseum | May 25th 09 | Dream Theater have always been known for their cheesiness, so I don't mind it, it's pretty nostalgic. Good return to form, wasn't painful to listen to.

3.0 good | Yazz_Flute | May 24th 09 | I confess to being a bit of a Dream Theater fanboy (I have been wearing the same Dream Theater hat pretty much revery day since August) but I can admit that they've been on a steady decline since 6DOIT. Systematic Chaos respecially was a pretty big letdown. However, after giving this multiple listens, I was very pleasantly surprised. If you rignore the lyrics (which never have been that great anyway) this is easily a much better album than Systematic Chaos, rOctavarium, perhaps even Train of Thought. Though at times the music may feel shallow and emotionless, for the rmost part this is a spectacular return to form for Dream Theater. I've even grown to quite like the single, A Rite of rPassage, which I first passed off as boring and uninspired. Especially notable are the clean interlude and majestic rchorus midway through "A Nightmare to Remember," the splendidly emotional guitar solo that closes "The Best of rTimes," and just about all 19 minutes of "The Count of Tuscany." "The Shattered Fortress" also manages to close out rthe AA suite in top form, with an amalgamation of riffs and themes used throughout the other four tracks. I applaud rDream Theater for releasing this album. An easy 4/5.r

3.5 great | sba4life | May 20th 09 | Dream Theater have been hit and miss for many since Scenes From A Memory (Too Heavy, Bad Songwriting, too poppy)
This record is the most balanced record since Scenes and it is possibly better. From the furious paced A Nightmare To Remember to the laid back and amazing Wither (IMO best ballad the band has ever put out)
To the Rush/ELP sounding tribute to MP's fathers death The Best Of Times. This record is a real prog rock trip that will leave you gasping for more at the end.
(A Rite Of Passage is the worst song and quite possiblly the worst way to represent this epic masterpeice/Wither is the second single)
A Nightmare To Remember 5/5
AROP 3/5
Wither 5/5
The Shattered Fortress 4/5
The Best Of Times 5/5
Count Of Tuscany 5/5 (Better than 8V and ITPOI SOme might like it better than ACOS)

3.5 great | YRI | August 28th 20 | With BC&SL, the Mike Portnoy era of DT had ended. Five great tracks and Wither make this a very good album that Dream Theater wouldn't top for another ten years.
Bump |
3.5 great | GamamJ | April 11th 20 | Hm. A big of a mixed bag. While I like the metal influences and the opener especially, I feel Rudess and Myung are being held in a stranglehold on this album. Outside of solos and/or unison-lines with Petrucci Rudess is allowed so to speak no presence. Some of the songs also have some far too cheesy sections given the overall metal vibe, and the lyrics on much of it are quite bad if I have to say so myself. Still a great album for sure, but what's up with the screaming Mike?

2.5 average | Alex C. | October 15th 15 | I hate this mostly for that horrendous AA suite track. Holy s**t Portnoy had to go and you can see it from this. Rest averages from 'average DT' to weird lyrics and great music "The Count.."

Bump |
3.5 great | itchy | September 21st 11 | This album is definitely back-heavy, and gets better and better with the last 3 songs. It also definitely cant's
be touched by the new album unfortunately. A Nightmare To Remember has some great parts such as the
middle section. They beat the introductory riff and gothic shit to death throughout the song for far too long
though, and Portnoy's vocal section always elicits a face-palm. A Rite Of Passage is the weakest and lamest
song on the album, and Wither is an okay (if not very tame and generic) ballad. The Shattered Fortress is a
retread of many of the suite's motifs and doesn't bring much that is new and interesting to the table, but I
forgive it because it is still pretty epic and succeeds in the nostalgia department. The Best Of Times is a
great song and gets points for the inherent emotional quality of the subject matter. The Count of Tuscany is
an epic end to the album, with some of the best songwriting, riffs, transitions, instrumental sections and
melodies the band has produced in a long while. I really dig the Rush and King Crimson vibes from the
second half of this album.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | Xenorazr | June 5th 11 | Even when Dream Theater begin to realize there are corrections to make, they can?t help being who they are. For all the complaints that can be found, Black Clouds & Silver Linings sees them in a more refined light than on anything since Six Degrees of Inner Turbulence. The inclusion of two or three potential classics doesn?t quite elevate the album to the quality of their better works, but it imparts a more optimistic message for the future.

4.0 excellent | dante1991 | April 28th 10 | A really good album and a true return to form for Dream Theater. Sure, there are long songs are crazy solos but this time they are more restrained and more importantly more MEMORABLE. LaBrie gives one of his strongest performances of his career and the lyrics are meaningful again!! (Woop!) Portnoy is fast and crazy as per usual giving strong, thundering drum beats to the songs. Petrucci also plays one of the best solos of DT on Best Of Times. rHighly reccomended to DT fans!rTop 3 Tracks: A Nightmare to Remember, The Best of Times, The Count of Tuscany

4.5 superb | Progmaster85 | October 27th 09 | Most Dream Theater fans would say that the golden age of Dream Theater was from 1992-1996 and then after the atrocious Falling into infinity, 1999-2000. Since then the decent Six Degrees, the excellent Train of Thought, the average Octavarium and the not-so-great Systematic Chaos were released. Even though there are a couple great ones in there, most would say Dream Theater has been declining since Scenes from a memory. Not anymore.

2.5 average | Rhino | July 13th 09 | I got this album based on Trey's review. Not a huge DT fan, although I've got 4 of their albums. I've only listened to this one twice, but so far I am unimpressed. Just more drivel from a technically proficient band that refuses to take chances. James LaBrie remains the biggest pussy singer in all of metal, and Jordan Rudess continues to choose the cheesiest synth patches this side of the 60's. The songs are bland, offering nothing new or interesting. DT fans will probably love this, but I'll take some of their older stuff over this. There are plenty of other bands out there that are as technically proficient and also push the envelope.
Note: I've got the 3-CD version, since I am a big King Crimson and Iron Maiden fan, and they do a cover from each band on the second disc. Again, they stick to formula, not putting much of their own stamp (if they have one) on any song. And James LaBrie only makes an ass of himself trying to sing an Iron Maiden song. He can barely pull off the Queen medley.
I wanted to rate this a 2, but I'm a nice guy so I put 2.5. I'll listen to it for the week and see if it grows on me.
Bump |
4.0 excellent | Flandrew | July 7th 09 | While I've been meticulously listening the the DT discography for years now, I'm still a bit worried about this album. It feels too similar to SC, which is their obvious worst album IMO. With more listens I think this will subside, but the feelings are definitely reminiscent of "Ohhh, this is heavy! Yeah that's badass!" Too quickly did those thoughts vanish and were replaced with... "These are lame attempts at singles." Luckily that's where the similarities seem to end. BC&SL has but one "Single" in the form of Wither, and although I understand the apparent need for a slower ballad, it just seems lame. The remainder of the album however is a wonderful showcase of both their ridiculous musical talent, and ability to write epic musical joureys for those patient enough to sit through them. The Shattered Fortress is easily my favorite; finally ending Mike's 12 Step Suite. I actually play that as a full album more times then the new album itself. ;)
I think in time it may rate a 4.5, but it is impossible to put this against Scenes, Six Degrees, or Images (all 5s IMO).
Also I've been playing Mike's songs on drums for years, and I don't feel any of these songs screaming "PLAY ME" like Home, or Strange Deja Vu. A Nightmare to Remember will probably be the only one I learn, but I doubt it will be with the same tenacity as Honor Thy Father.
DT Forever!

5.0 classic | Drakodan | June 18th 09 | Magnificent. Not since Scenes From a Memory has a Dream Theater track had such a sense of synergy between the tracks. As far as I can tell, this is the first Dream Theater record in which every track is based off a real-life event, rather than being metaphorical or conceptual. As a result, the emotion and effort put into this record is all the more recognizable. A true triumph, and a real silver lining for Dream Theater.

2.5 average | HorrorBusiness78 | June 1st 09 | I enjoyed The Best of Times, however, I just don't like when Dream Theater tries to do straight metal. Also, why do Portnoy and Petrucci have to do background vocals on every song? They sound terrible and it hurts the song in my opinion. There were definitely some great instrumental sections on this album and solos were fantastic as usual, but even then they sounded somewhat rehashed from older material.
