4.0 excellent | robotmagician | August 28th 20 | While certainly a spiritual successor to Assassination, Ulver give us a different take on the genre. In my opinion, none of these songs would have fit on their previous studio effort. Flowers of Evil takes on a different tone, one that does not reach the highs of Assassination, but is a solid addition to Ulver's substantial discography. The singles are probably the strongest tracks here, but Machine Guns and Peacock Feathers, Apocalypse 1993, Hour of the Wolf, and Nostalgia are not too far behind. A Thousand Cuts is a pleasant closer, while One Last Dance is most certainly the weakest track on the album. Overall, an great-to-excellent album upon repeated listens, but one that is on the weaker end of Ulver's near-spotless list of LPs.

3.5 great | slandroid | August 28th 20 | Enjoyed it at first listen. Feels like a continuation of their last record, which might be the first time I can say that about an Ulver album.

4.0 excellent | Toondude | August 27th 20 | This feels more like a spiritual successor to Assassination of Julius Caesar, which is a slight disappointment seeing how much these guys tend to experiment with their sound. Still though, a lot of catchy tunes on this record.

3.0 good | ChrimzonCanine | July 15th 20 | Guys, it's clearly SoundCloud country rap. Case closed.

3.4 great | Trey STAFF | January 13th 23 | Until now, it never felt like Ulver had created the same album twice. On Flowers of Evil, though, they pick up right where The Assassination of Julius Caesar left off, except with less experimentation and no real surprises. Having said that, I've always liked Ulver more when they use vocals and I'm also a big Depeche Mode fan. This album is 90s-era Depeche Mode with a bit of an Ulver twist.

3.5 great | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | January 3rd 21 | Yet again Ulver double down on their foray into electropop (and coldwave even?) and this time to some mixed results. I eventually grew to enjoy this more, but my core issue lies with the song-writing, not so much the style or the sound. Melodies, hooks, memorable musical choices that'd elevate the sound were often missing.

3.0 good | Chino smoking it up! | November 17th 20 | Definitely feels like the B side of Assassination. This time the songs lean even more into that (Depeche Modish) song formula and less into those electronic psy progressions you catch on Assassination that provides the desired depth.

2.5 average | Panzerchrist | October 12th 20 | Why this wasn't billed as a compilation as opposed to an entire full length is a little confusing. It more or less sounds like tracks intentionally removed from the previous LP; either because of inconsistencies in tone or just...songwriting quality. Nothing on here stands out as much as anything on that aforementioned LP, and definitely feels like an awkward stop gap as they, inevitably, drastically change styles again.

3.0 good | BRAman22 | September 7th 20 | Outside of a couple of standouts, this is a listenable yet forgettable release.

3.1 good | Erwann S. STAFF | September 7th 20 | Yup, this one doesn't work as well as intended. Building upon their 2017 synthpop record but without bringing anything new to the table. It's much less arty and much poppier, but shit pop music isn't supposed to make me feel like that. I should tap my feet, sing along and dance very badly. I tapped my feet on several occasions but never has the record managed to embark me on its journey. I hope this is a grower.

3.0 good | OmairSh | September 6th 20 | A Thousand Cuts is excellent

2.0 poor | ajcollins15 | September 1st 20 | I feel really bad for actually giving this album this low of a score because Ulver is one of the greatest and unique bands out there that have changed their identity not once but four or five times through the years. Their current iteration though is this synthpop sound that they really nailed home on their 2017 album, but really add nothing new to what they did, and in most cases explore more boring and uninteresting ideas on this new album. In many ways, these all seem like b-sides from the last LP. The instrumentals are not as interesting, the lyrics are less potent, and the overall aesthetic isn?t really strong.

4.0 excellent | asanisimasa | August 28th 20 | At first i wanna say this is dissapointing, but I also feel like it could be a grower. It definitely is missing something that their last LP and EP had but the final three tracks were good enough to make me want to listen again. The end of little boy is great redit: it grew on me

3.8 excellent | Benjamin Kuettel EMERITUS | August 28th 20 | A laid back extension of their '80s goth/synthpop style with more guitars and steady rhythms pretty much from beginning to end. While the unpredictable shifts in tone and experimentation from The Assassination of Julius Caesar is missed, this is still a solid effort from the wolves of Norway. Flowers of Evil is a dark yet inviting "pop" album and a highlight of 2020 music.

3.0 good | Gary STAFF | August 28th 20 | "Oh, a bad song. Oh a good song! Oh, another bad. Wait, another good!" [repeat this] To be honest, I'm somewhat disappointed, this wasn't *that* new I expected it to be, more like an Assassination B-side album...? It wasn't hard to sit through, but I don't feel I want to have this on an infinite replay. Last track was clearly my favourite - bringing back those Shadows Of The Sun vibes (for a short time) caught me totally off-guard.

3.0 good | Brandon Scott EMERITUS | August 28th 20 | This was a struggle to sit through. Not bad, but in comparison to the sheer exuberance of Assassination of Julius Caesar this falls short.
