2.5 average | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | December 1st 20 | I leave here let down, momentarily by 'technicolor' as an album and in an increasingly overarching manner by math rock as a genre. Both strike a chord with me to an extent, making long technically skilful music with mostly pleasant atmosphere. But both seem more interested (more so than ever before, Covet the band and math rock the genre) in challenging other instrumentalists and impressing their musician peers with riffs-per-minute schemes and rhythm experiments, than crafting music worth noting. As far as instrumental skillset goes, what an impeccable album indeed; as far as a musical experience, dry as a jerky and not enough salt.

3.8 excellent | Thompson D. Gerhart STAFF | June 21st 20 | I love restraint in service to the song - I practically worship at the altar of the very concept, as does this album. Still, for the prowess of Yvette and her band, it feels a bit like rudderless lip service. A joyful jaunt in no particular direction. Sure, it's fun, it's nice, it's skillful, but... Well, it doesn't go anywhere meaningful. Ultimately, it's still a great and enjoyable album, but missing a spice of purpose that would take it to the next level.

4.0 excellent | ajcollins15 | June 10th 20 | Covet is a three-piece band from California lead by Yvette Young (YouTube guitarist). Their debut record effloresce, was a great debut but had a lot of shortcomings to it that a lot of debut albums have in the instrumental genre; lack of interest from start to finish. On their sophomore record technicolor, however, they blow all expectations out of the water by producing one of the most interesting instrumental math rock albums I have heard in a long time. From start to finish there is a great weaving of lush soundscapes that will take your ears on an introspective drive. Every song is packed with great math rock chord progressions, post-rock synths and back-up guitar chords, and some great vocals on three of the tracks. My biggest complaint is the guitars from time to time (especially on the last track) can be too heavily re-verbed/washed out. Other than that, this new record is a great rock album that uses math rock as a lovely soundscape rather than a noodle-fest that many other bands in the genre seem to be doing.

0.0 | Blud Vidal | June 8th 20 | I don't like that I'm coming around to the fact that much modern mathy rock simply exists to numb my mind and evoke mildly pleasant feelings. I really admire Yvette Young as a musician and artist and I espouse and recognize her massive talent and skill. Unfortunately, Covet's music does not engage me as intensely or consistently as it should given Young's sizable prowess. It's relatively easy listening for a math release, and while it contains a lot of pleasant riffs and impressive instrumentation, it doesn't quite grip me like it should on paper. That being said, technicolor is a fine listen.

3.0 good | Erwann S. STAFF | June 8th 20 | Aight. Technically, this is as impressive as their previous material, and the melodeez are cool. Their first EP remains however their pinnacle, condensing all their ideas into six juggernauts of songs. Here, while it's always pretty, it's not always impacting. Sure, their soundscape have expanded: there are some post-rock crescendos added here and there, as well as lush and dreamy textures, each boosting the polyrhythmic nets deployed by the power trio. Still, after 5 listens, can't remember shit. I always have a good time jamming this, but it does fall in the background too easily. Maybe Yvette's lovely vocals should have been further incorporated, as they are briefly used in two tracks only. I'm still waiting for the Currents LP version.
