Brighton based metalcore chaps Architects, while incredibly young to be releasing their third album, have been a shining beacon among the British underground scene for a number of years and have as yet failed to gain the success of many of their undeserving contemporaries. Perhaps this is why the theme of their new LP has been described by the band members as a pop at the 'high and mighty', people who harbour undeserved arrogance. With Hollow Crown it is as if Architects are saying 'this is what you're doing and we can do it better'. And my do they do it better.
The first notes of 'Early Grave' give the listener a taster of the heaviness to come on Hollow Crown. Intricate yet crushing riffs are offered by guitarists Tom Searle and Tim Hillier-Brooke which are backed up very well by Ali Dino's bass work and Dan Searle keeps help keeps things tight with his controlled yet chaotic drumming. Frontman Sam Carter's voice has matured greatly since 'Ruin' both lyrically and technique wise. His voice is incredibly yet highly adaptable as we can hear on tracks such as 'Every Last Breath' and particularly the title track, often displaying an Arron Gillespie (Underoath) style clean vocal wail that is melodic yet dark, adding to the epicness of Hollow Crown. While many Archi-fans may be dissapointed by the less technical direction that Architects seem to be taking, Architects have manage to mature their song writing ability while often making excellent use of their musicianship, for example the riffs and blastbeats of 'Dead March' and the odd time signatures and squeals of 'Left With A Last Minute'.
While Architects are doing nothing new and borrow much from their peers, Each track on Hollow Crown is incredibly well crafted. The combination of epicness and brutalness is definitely a winning formula that is sure to propel them out of the underground.

diggin' the clean vocals, or is it just me gettin' softer? nah, don't think so...
still very technical record, you might think it's less technical than ruin, but it isn't, it just takes you a while to hear/discover all those cool riffs
i'd say some of these songs are even harder to play than those on ruin
anyway, even though january isn't even over yet, this is already my fav record of the year!

Every song on this album is awesome but it becomes tiresome to sit through after a while because it's so relentless. As an album it's still not as good as nightmares.

So Architects have found their sound, and its pretty fucking amazing. With pretty incredible guitar and percussion work and emotionally powerful vocals the Uk band prove that they have a metalcore sound that can't be matched my alot of the bands on the scene today. Where this record faulters though is a complete lack of ideas. After awhile all of the songs tend to run together, so instead of being exhilarating it becomes, well, boring. If they continue to hone their skill and creativly expand we could have really amazing record instore. But this in itself is one of the best metalcore records of the year.

So my relationship with Architects first began with the release of their debut LP 'Nightmares' and hey that was some awesome stuff. Seriously, for kids their age coming up in a British scene that was hardly full of innovation or even anything all that good I gotta admit I was kinda blown away. Their technical ability was matched by songwriting skills which was a plus. And then they get rid of their original singer and bring out another release - 'Ruins'. I mean like I hear this is good but other than 2 or 3 tracks I haven't actually heard it. So having skipped that record completely we come to 'Hollow Crown'.
Well they've toned down the technicality (although this is still complex stuff) thrown in the occasional polyrhythmic assault, introduced some fantastic cleans which are by no means overdone and produced another excellent little record. Well done chaps.

Edit: Bumped this from 4.5 to 4.rThe impact this album had on me four years ago has worn off. Still a great album for it's genre, but much of it feels like it blends into one another.rSomething I've noticed on this is that the screams are passionate, and the clean vocals are used to solid effect, much unlike their two most recent albums.

Great metalcore CD that shows the more frenzied and chaotic side of Architects in "Dethroned" and "Borrowed Time" and a more melodic side in "In Elegance" and "Left With A Last Minute." Sam shines throughout the album, combining a solid but boring yell mixed with awesome clean vocals. The good production is also a plus.

Listened to this in full, unfortunately. Boring, dry and unoriginal best describe this album. The singer is a copycat of Sikth's vocalist but with less range. Every time a song starts to descend into a clean, proggy section, it's no different than the small clean section from the song before, and accompanied by this section are those awful vocals. The riffs show some original potential, but mostly just fall to overused tritones, a generic mathcore mistake. This album was painfully boring, and made no impact on me at all. Avoid it if looking to get into the genre, as this is not the place to look.

Top-notch vocals (especially the clean ones), sharp production, tight musicianship. Highlight tracks are "Early Grave", "Follow the Water", "In Elegance", and "Hollow Crown." This album contains no filler, and every song displays raw emotion and carries it's own weight.

A pretty decent attempt, though they have traded their unpredictable songwriting for straight up verse, breakdown, quiet bridge build up to clean singing section metalcore songwriting. It works well and they still maintain their technical music aspect but it is completely formulaic songwriting. Follow the Water is a tune though.
