(8/27/18): At the time of its release, Vulgar had to have come as a shock to the system - a bigger surprise compared to MACABRE, even. Dir En Grey's fourth studio outing exuded less Eastern vibes, thereby showing off a more prominent Americanized sheen, though it was still unmistakably metal. Diru were also easing up on lengthy compositions and just generally streamlining things, thankfully not at the expense of any redeeming qualities. Indeed, Vulgar is by far the bestest 'gym album' this quintet has delivered next to the other two succeeding LPs. Despite the rocky, underwhelming mix and predictable songwriting in places, the album really didn't do much else wrong as far as other aspects go. People could easily make the argument that it was one of Diru's most consistent affairs from front to back.

Vulgar marked another change of direction for Dir En Grey's style, as this is a much more Westernised album. Vulgar sees the band pursuing a more metalcore/nu-metal style. This means there is much less emotional power to be found in the music; it is appealing more in its general musicianship. There is still a dark, creepy atmosphere to be had, but the sheer diversity the band once had to offer is now almost vanished; a lot of the songs blend too much into each other, and there are a lot less memorable moments. However, there is still the dark, creepy atmosphere commonplace in the band's music, and Obscure and Child Prey rank among the band's best songs. It is also nice to know that even when the band is following Western trends, they still manage to do it far better than those they are copying.

This is one of my favorite albums by Diru. Great review, and I love the part about Obscure, best song on the album. The video is fantastic, easily my favorite Dir en grey video. Also, if you have the chance, see them live! I did and it was the greatest concert I have ever been to, they even opened with Obscure!
