3.0 good | SinNanna | December 1st 20 | Gautier Serre's Igorrr project is pretty infamous because of its pretty unique and eccentric blend of different styles of metal, electronica and classical music and the intentionally gaudy way in which all of it comes together. This same unapologetic gaudyness however has often turned me off a little from Gautier's music, despite how much I respect the surgical-level eye for detail and musical talent that is needed to produce tracks like these. Gautier tends to structure his songs in a way that can come off pretty gimmicky and more style-over-substance, with genre combinations and ideas that clash sonically in a really ugly way. I do think ever since 2017's Savage Sinusoid Gautier has refined his style and made me walk away from his music relatively pleased, and this record sort of fits that description too. On one hand, we have a song like Musette Maximum which is a melting pot of upbeat accordion melodies, double bass drumming (which overall on this album sound a bit too punchy and relentlessly mechanical for my taste) and funky slap bass which I really don't enjoy, but other tracks like for example Very Noise and Camel Dancefloor are actually quite visceral. Tracks like Lost In Introspection and Overweight Poesy have some pretty captivating and sometimes beautiful arrangements, vocals and melodies worked among their breakbeat passages, which segway pretty tastefully into each other as well. Still, my gripes about Igorrr are still here to stay at the moment, and as such I can only say I found this to be a decent release at best.

4.5 superb | Chamora | July 3rd 20 | Igorrr finally reins in their insanity to produce a catchy and (more) accessible album. One of the few albums that had me on the edge of my seat the whole first listen, and that I've since been making all my friends listen to. Will probably be a year-end best albums staple IMO.

4.0 excellent | Blazewire | June 1st 20 | This album is a crazy eclectic combination of music styles. The base and core is rooted in metal, but there are so many genres and influences in this mental mixing pot. There are classical, operatic, electronic, eastern influences just to name a few that stuck with me. This is by no means an easy listen, but each listen rewarded me with discovering something new. If you want a challenging and truly experimental album, I highly recommend this. being a fan of Devin Townsend I thought I had heard odd and experimental choices in music, but Igorrr takes it to another level. Tracks to check out: Parpaing (with George "Corpsegrinder" Fisher on guest vocals) this is the "normal" sounding track on the album, Downgrade Desert, Musette Maximum, and Camel Dancefloor.

3.0 good | Gene Gol-Jonsson CONTRIBUTOR | June 1st 20 | The unfortunately inevitable happened, Igorrr's style turned into a gimmick. They now come off as one of those pretend-"look how weird and crazy we are" bands. Not bad songs, but I'd rather listen to them on their own.

3.5 great | cjbizzlebizzle | May 26th 20 | 'Spirituality and Distortion' feels like a bit of a continuation of 'Savage Sinusoid' furthering Igorrr's progression towards metal but still retaining the base of Breakcore that is the lifeblood of Igorrr's music. The beats are as spastic and energetic as ever and this effort feels more riff based than ever. The one major complaint here is the vocal performances aren't as dramatic, beautiful and intense as they have been in the past. They are just less featured overall and the record centers more around the instrumentals than in the past and it leaves a bit of a void. That being said Igorrr's sound feels as polished and approachable as ever while still mashing intense electronic beats and metal riffs together effectively.

5.0 classic | noahconstrictor | May 14th 20 | About as perfect as you can get with Igorrr. More of the same is sometimes a great thing, and with Igorrr, they somehow still have a fresh sound still. Their blend of literally every genre creates a sort of soundscape in a way, and you can feel the rhythm in the chaos. Amazing album, worth countless relistens.

4.0 excellent | ajcollins15 | March 30th 20 | Igorrr is an electronic artists who does things in a very unconventional way by fusing so many different genres and through the years each album becomes more and more refined. On his most recent release, the French artist is showing off his chops for making the weird sound so great. The biggest gripe is he could have shaved off a few of the last 5 or 6 tracks, because after 40 minutes I wish the record would end already. Otherwise, it's a great great album!

3.0 good | Chino smoking it up! | March 30th 20 | I can see myself bumping this one maybe, it has even more metal appeal...and I don't know yet if that's a good or a bad thing.

3.5 great | Gary STAFF | March 30th 20 | It has its highs and lows: for example the (gated) drums are getting a bit annoying after a while, since they sound pretty much the same... and yeah, way too modern for my taste. But the experimental side of the album is pretty fun.

4.0 excellent | Fernando Alves STAFF | March 29th 20 | What pleases me most about Spirituality and Distortion, in addition to its experimentalism, is the simplified approach of each song. It may seem contradictory, but if we remove the decorative elements, each song focuses only on one central idea. That's the album's secret, in my opinion.

3.7 great | Erwann S. STAFF | March 27th 20 | This might sound pedantic (prob is), but this might be what Mozart would have thought 2020 music would sound like. It has elements of Western classical music, Arabic folk music, metal, breakbeats and every weird shit Gautier Serre ever listened to. Still, he's been known for years for fusing these genres, so what does this record change in his discography? Well, it's not as obnoxious as other LPs, the switches from one genre to another are less abrupt, and overall he knows better than ever how to blend two totally different styles into one mindfuck music.

4.0 excellent | Panzerchrist | March 27th 20 | My first instinct was to say it didn't touch Savage Sinusoid, which is, in my opinion, Igorrr's
most complete work to date.
After five more listens, I would say that S & D clearly has other priorities, and the one first
and foremost is 'fun'. The musical chairs approach Gautier has always taken to songwriting seems
more melodic and straightforward in places, emphasizing the European folk melodies just a tad
more, driving home the themes that he seems to be indicating in the title.
While I would love to see more of Laurent Lunoir and her absolutely stellar operatic stylings, I
understand why Gautier took a step back, assessed and moved in a different direction. It certainly
makes for a more interesting listen, overall.
