People have been saying it resembles an amalgam of all previous albums thus far, and I think for the
most part that's true. Might bump this down based on how the album grows on me but so far it
definitely seems a worthy addition to the catalogue. Hey Ma & Faith are still incredibly affecting in
context.
Also much like 22AM, a number of these songs could benefit from being more fleshed out.

This is sick -- what a unique and imaginative release. Love that sample in iMi that sounds almost like a hissing furnace, and there keep being so many layers to focus on, one moment to the next. It all sounds so gooooood

The antithesis of For Emma, the antidote to the bleakness of Bon Iver's debut record. Although there are still matters that Vernon struggles with (organized religion gets targeted a few times), he seems to conclude that faith and hope can be procured from even the darkest places, and even after all the struggles of his life, as he proclaims in "Faith": "I'm not all out of mine".

This is mostly just terribly inoffensive. While that can be regarded as a step forward after the rather obnoxious 22 A Million, that doesn't account for much. There's hardly anything memorable about it, safe for Naeem and maybe Jelmore (both with interesting instrumentation), two songs that have their immense faults as well (Naeem's trite, dumb chorus and Jelmore not going anywhere). After two listens, there's nothing that genuinely makes me want to return to this. Moreover, the lack of personality downright annoys me. Not necessarily his worst, but the most redundant. - 3.5

More of the same from the last two. Some nice experimental textures. Beautiful moments, as we've come to expect from a Bon Iver project, sprinkled throughout. Maybe the quietest album of the discography; leaves me wanting a few more big moments. The detailed and layered soundscapes of We, Faith, and Salem make it worth returning to. I could see my rating go up with a few more listens on some nice headphones.

Let's be honest it may be Bon Iver's worst album, but it's a superb piece that for the moment remains one of the most beautiful releases of the year for me. They ended up completing their last cycle, the fall in the author's words, and it is again an evolution and a progression (I emphasize these 2 terms) for the group. Always as intimate, but always as exciting, on I,I we are moving towards a hybrid music difficult to classify, between pop, classical, gospel/rnb, hiphop, folk and jazz sounds... the production is majestic and the overall work is so subtly complex, so charming. I think they could have done a little better with vocals and melodies, but the main thing is elsewhere. Above all, they have managed to keep their moments of apotheosis, like a firework display, which can be found once or only partially in all the tracks.

I enjoy this more than 22, M. And I really like that album. I probably enjoy it more than For Emma even. Just speaks to me clearly. I think it is written superbly aswell, and produced well too. Nothing Bon Iver does will likely ever strike me like CREEKS does though.rMy favorites are U (absolutely and totally disagree with Sowing on this one :D), Sh'Diah, iMi, raBi, salem, and Marion.
