4.5 superb | NeroCorleone80 | January 16th 16 | An intense mix of post-punk and noise rock. Possibly Nick Cave's finest vocal performance too. If you
can imagine The Jesus Lizard crossed with Joy Division then you get a good idea of what this album
sounds like.

2.0 poor | lz41 | November 7th 18 | This is shit. And it's particularly galling because you can hear that with minor adjustments it could have been good. Until a late effort to make the album accessible, the jazz licks, raw tantrums and groundbreaking soundscapes are ruined by music that is off-key, off-time and out of tune. You may persist with "Junkyard" - indeed, the Birthday Party as a whole - as a show of faith in Cave, but at some point you come to the uneasy realisation that he is the worst part of the ensemble with his lazy and indulgent performances and unintelligible lyrics that when studied on paper read like they were written by someone who had learnt English for all of an hour. Had The Bad Seeds not carved out such a superb career, The Birthday Party would be forgotten today. As it is, they are a novelty act at best.

4.5 superb | MadBaron | February 14th 15 | An exercise in dissonance. This is by far the most menacing, psychotic sounding album I've ever heard. Noisey, almost to the point of being painful, clashing drums, hellishly distorted rockabilly licks and Nick Cave screaming and ranting over all of it like a lunatic. For something so dissonant and truly twisted, it's remarkably infectious, especially on it's more energetic tracks.

0.0 | RYMsfullofscenesters | November 5th 13 | Maybe that cover isn't as ill-fitting as it seems. It sounds like what your dad's/uncle's crappy hard rock collection might have sounded like to you when you were 3 or 4. Rock n' roll made into an honest man, in that the sound reflects the ugliness of the band's intentions. Some of these songs make death metal sound cuddly.
