A year before MBV. Don't let the tag fool you though: Nowhere isn't really shoegaze. It's more of a fuzzy neo-psych record, with little atmospheric laden like MBV (on the shoegaze side) or Slowdive (on the dream pop side) would develop. It's a great 90s pop psych album, much more connected - imho - to The Beatles and The Byrds than Sonic Youth. This kind of aesthetic works much less on me, but the pop melodeez are nice, and when they hit the pedals ahrd I vibe ahrd.

This album for me was a summer essential. Released in October of 1990, this is revered as a shoegaze staple along with My Bloody Valentine's Loveless. Remember those long summer days of your childhood, when your main obligations were playing tag and drinking soda to the inevitable stomach ache? When the rising sun's glare was a optimistic sign of things to commence in your day, rather than a melancholie omen of things that cannot be? The faded sound of this album is reminscent of that childhood, from the commencement of summer attributed to the pulsating bassline of 'Seagull' to the nostalgic riffs of 'Kaleidoscope,' this is a hidden gem buried amongst the rhetoric of most present Modest-Mouse-gimmick indie bands. Forget waking up to school in the morning, forget that mundane job with that dogshit boss, let's sail to that mirage of a horizon.

I always feel so astonished when i hear Shoegaze. How can a style (when done well) be so perfect? How can a style awaken so many emotions within a human being? The fuse of the genre is something that i have always wanted to have witnessed and lived. "Nowhere" is yet another one of those albums that show how the style is broad and full of life. It may be impossible to surpass the perfection of "Loveless", but this material is practically flawless.

If not for Loveless, Nowhere would be the definitive shoegaze album. Of course, without My Bloody Valentine, there would be no Ride to begin with...

Too bad they fell at times into the "silly shoegaze" trap (Polar Bear) because overall this album is really good, different from My Bloody Valentine, as good as Pale Saints first 2 albums. The drums are really great, and it is noteworthy that drums can be great on a shoegaze album. Not for everyone, if you don't like the silly love song touch in shoegaze, avoid this Ride as it would get you Nowhere (yeah i know...).
Edit: I changed my mind about this one, it's actually great, don't get fooled by the first 4 tracks, the next 4 (from Deams burn down to Vapour Trail) are really awesome.
