Album of The Year is an ironic title because it's probably their worst Patton-led album up to this point and is a stepdown from King For a Day. That being said, there's enjoyable traits here. The guitarwork is reliable as usual, The rhytm section takes a back seat at time here but they play well and keep the bottom-end steady, the more laidback vibe here is welcome from the frenetic energy of previous works, and Patton's vocals are in top form as usual. "Collision" is a hardhitting opener that works pretty well, and "Stripsearch" is a tasty slice of deceptively relaxing music led by Patton's hypnotic vocals. "Last Cup of Sorrow" continues the trend, and "Naked in Front of The Computer" is a funny throwaway track with the riffiest song structure on the album yet barely makes the 2 minute mark. "She Loves me Not" is driven by Patton's smooth vocals not unlike "Evidence," and "Pristina" closes the record on a good note. A solid record for the band if a bit underwhelming in spades.

With Trey Spruance's departure following the recording of King for a Day, another guitarist was needed to fill the position. Jon Hudson, a former roommate of bassist Billy Gould, was selected. Unfortunately, his performance here is totally devoid of any personality; the solo on "Ashes to Ashes" is great, granted, but it would be so much better were there any passion behind it. The same can be said for the rest of the guitarwork, and indeed, much of the instrumentation in general. That is the problem with Album of the Year (the title is ironic-- the band members themselves were unhappy with the record): it's obvious the band was not as engrossed in the music as before, and thus the final product suffers. Luckily, Mike Patton manages to save some of the proceedings with his fantastic vocal work, and a couple of the songs ("Mouth to Mouth," the aforementioned "Ashes to Ashes") are worthwhile. Unsurprisingly, the band broke up following this album. (However, they reformed several years later.)

Considering Patton's other projects, this feels pretty underwhelming. Some solid tracks with "Stripsearch", "Ashes to Ashes" "Collision" and "She Loves Me Not". Instrumentation kinda feels underdeveloped at times.

Let Pitchfork be - album contains the same amount of good tunes you can find on their previous efforts; what may lack here is just the mere 'surprise' factor, which distinguished the first two efforts of the Patton-era.

Amazing in its sheer irony. AOTY is by far the most polarizing FNM record, with even the band members hating it. What most people fail to realize is that AOTY is the closest thing to the glory of Angel Dust they've ever gotten, using complete recklessness and nihilism to their advantage.
