There are interesting musical ideas like the instrumental break of "The Bringer", the chorus and instrumental break of "Natural Chaos" and of course the glorious "Song of the Damned", but these are so scarce and short lived that one wonders if they could've been elaborated upon, maybe that would've put this album to memorable status.

The album's fairly enjoyable, but has its dose of the ailments that soilwork would continue having for all their following albums - bad melodies, subpar instrumentation and overal so-so-ness.

This one shows Soilwork trying things a little on the accessibility angle, with their songs a little more stripped down and a little easier on the bugeoning metal-listeners ears. For that I can give this record some props, and there are definitely a few gems here (hear: Follow the Hollow, As We Speak, the title-track, Song of the Damned...) to keep the average fan happy. This seemed to be precede the start of a wave of polarization for Soilwork's followers, though luckily this record doesn't pray folly to that too much. I'd give 'er a 3.3/5

Natural Born Chaos sees Soilwork arriving at their full-blown alternative metal sound. While their influences are still somewhat noticeable, they have by now a fully-formed, individual and identifiable sound. With Devin Townsend (Strapping Young Lad) behind the boards, the production was always going to be strong, and so it is here. New keyboard player Sven Karlsson features prominently in the mix, the entire album wrapped in a swathe of lush synths. The overall endeaviour is less guitar driven (the guitars are generally pinning down grooves more than riffs) and much more focused on Bjorn Strid's increasingly accomplished clean vocals. While he was no slouch to begin with, his growth within a year is quite impressive. Unfortunately, despite all of these new additions, Soilwork's songwriting hasn't really improved enough to make full use of them, and the end result while solid and listenable, seems like it should've been so much more.
