5.0 classic | 3waycrash | February 7th 16 | The Glass Passenger shows a more mature Andrew McMahon with an album tied with a critical time in his life. Where Everything in Transit was very upbeat and sunny, its follow up is not. The Glass Passenger deals largely with McMahon's experience being diagnosed with leukemia and his subsequent battle with it. With that being said, the album is not depressing or bleak. There is a significant change in tone and the subject matter is clearly very personal; however, McMahon managed to miraculously stay positive and hopeful. With that context, The Glass Passenger is a testament to McMahon's courage and optimism during a dark time in his life. While the songs are quite the departure from the fun and upbeat tone of Everything in Transit, The Glass Passenger is nevertheless filled with a lot of heart. Andrew McMahon, though incapacitated for a time, returns stronger than ever with a collection of great piano pop filled with wonderful lyrics, catchy songs, and a hopeful tone.

4.0 excellent | Kirk Bowman STAFF | November 1st 15 | yeah, it's obviously flawed at points, but good luck finding something this genuine AND optimistic anywhere else. the messages on songs like "Swim" and "Hammers and Strings" would seem overly optimistic if they weren't coming from someone who actually had been through it all and actually knew it would be ok.

3.5 great | DaveyBoy EMERITUS | July 10th 09 | Not as immediate as the band's debut, 'The Glass Passenger' sees Andrew McMahon trade in "witty" and replace it with "mature" following his successful battle with leukemia. While the hooks & melodies are turned down, the album is definitely a grower if given the chance. But while there really is not a bad track amongst the 13, the majority of them do not demand repeat listens. Thankfully, this is balanced off by 'The Resolution', which is not only the band's best song yet, but a song of the year contender. Recommended Tracks: The Resolution, Spinning, Drop Out - The So Unknown & American Love.

4.0 excellent | mdb5061 | October 15th 08 | Jack’s Mannequin became in instant success when their 2005 debut, Everything in Transit, but the glory would be short lived as front man Andrew McMahon was diagnosed with leukemia. Transit is fueled by the fire and emotion of McMahon’s breakup with a long-time girlfriend and he now displays his fight for survival on the piano rock band’s second album, The Glass Passenger.
“The Resolution” tells the story of McMahon’s diagnosis with elegant piano notes and invigorating percussions as he sings; “For that moment it just froze/And I felt sick and so alone.” With an explosion of vocals and life McMahon reveals his soul when he asks for answers in the refrain; “Yeah I just need life/I’ll be lying in the dark/As I search for the resolution.” It gives strength and reason to those who have the dimmest of light ahead of them.
“Caves” takes you down the path of McMahon who lies near death in a hospital bed while fighting for his life as he slips in and out of consciousness. The song starts with a slow and steady saunter against the backdrop of a piano melody that eventually bursts free with life and a chorus of guitars. The lyrics evoke a frightening sight that many can relate to; “We’re not gonna lie/Son, you just might die/Get you on that morphine drip.”
The Glass Passenger is an album that transcends others in its genre due to McMahon’s honesty. It is a testament to the power and strength of the human spirit and will bring strength to anyone who goes through.
