| 4.5 superb | Jom STAFF | September 17th 08 | To fully appreciate 'Traced in Air' - and who Cynic are, in general - it would be a good idea to spin 1993's 'Focus' first. Do you read trilogies starting with the middle book? Does "Wayne's World 2" make any sense whatsoever without having the gnarly exposition "Wayne's World" has? Sure, you could pick up 'Traced in Air' without having any idea whatsoever who Cynic are and not have an understanding as to why "Focus" is heralded by nearly everyone, but the sheer enjoyment and satisfaction that comes with listening to this record will be incomplete without that prior knowledge and experience. If you haven't yet, do it now. If you are familiar, please read on.
Drummer Sean Reinert went on record proclaiming that the record would be "more upbeat, energetic, and most important of all, pretty God damn brutal," and he's absolutely right. "Focus'" biggest criticism was in the heavily vocoder-laden vocals - some people endured it, others cringed and blindly dismissed the record - but gone (for the most part) are the robotic, mechanized vocals from Paul Masvidal. Opting for cleaner, more melodic vocals in his upper-register (newcomer Tymon Kruidenier handles the harsh death growls on this record - he sounds awesome on "The Unknown Guest"), Masvidal's new delivery is stellar. Tracks like "Evolutionary Sleeper," "Integral Birth," and "Adam's Murmur" showcase these higher vocals, while stellar guitarwork from Masvidal and Kruidenier whips around the vocals. The solos are stunning - just listen to "Evolutionary Sleeper" and its concluding solo - and the lead/rhythm parts juxtapose to near-perfection throughout the record.
There are an incredible number of highlights on this record -"The Unknown Guest's" mellifluous main riff, "King of Those Who Know's" Byzantine, schizophrenic crunches could have split Pangaea while soothing one's ears like aural aloe (what a beautiful outro, by the way - almost as majestic and innocent as "The Space for This's" introduction). The lyricism on the record is also top-notch and challenging; once again, Masvidal returns to theological, spiritual and philosophical issues - themes typically far removed from your average death metal act.
Sean Reinert and bassist Sean Malone absolutely slay, as expected. They are quite easily one of the best rhythm sections to ever grace the Earth. Malone needs no expansive introduction: a well-versed fretless bassist who also composes for his Gordian Knot project, his lush basslines and tandem effort with the phenomenal Reinert consistently pull you in. Album opener "Nunc Fluens" (translation: "The Moving Present") starts so softly, but as soon as Reinert starts pounding away in a frenzied, almost tribal run, Malone's plunking adds just enough gasoline to set the song's low-end inferno ablaze. As for the bookend "Nunc Stans" ("The Timeless Present" - in theology and philosophy, a point in time where one cannot establish causation between the now and the past or future)? It must be heard.
Actually, the whole record needs to be experienced - Cynic sound tighter than ever - and like "Focus," "Traced in Air" will challenge you to listen for things you previously may not have looked for in music, your emotions will calmly ebb and flow just as much as they will violently turn, and the seamless listen from start-to-finish will leave you speechless at first.
Then again, I devoted five paragraphs and these last couple sentences talking about how brilliant this record is.
What effect will 'Traced in Air' have on you? Listen once, then listen again, and again. I can't guarantee that you'll love this record as much as I've loved Cynic's work, but it's certainly possible that, if you approach their work with an open mind, Cynic will open your mind even further.

| 5.0 classic | John A. Hanson STAFF | September 17th 08 | Listening to "Traced in Air", it isn't some massive evolution from "Focus". However, everything about the band has been tightened in the 15 year layover, and the album is far smoother and more focused, resulting in a much more listenable and flowing affair. The incredible riffs and solos are back, and the vocals are far better and are actually now reason enough to listen. With improved percussion, bass work that while not as show-offy as before is still just as precise, and an incredible overarching sense of beauty, "Traced in Air" is one of the best records of 2008, even with only a night of listening under my belt.

| 5.0 classic | AngelPhoenix | September 25th 08 | Damn it all, this thing is just perfect. The flow, the musicianship, the songwriting, the vocals, the acoustic sections/breaks, the solos, the ambiance, the keys, the riffs, the base, the drums...you get the idea. It just all comes together in a nigh impenetrable 34 minute package of pure awesomeness that, because of its brevity, begs to be replayed over and over. And as you do, you pick up nuance and subtly after glorious nuance and subtly. Each track is unique and each is fabulous in its own way. Excruciatingly exciting riffs that boast ever so slight tuning changes quiver up and down a rolling wave of precise, catchy bass work, and a never ending barrage of liquid-like drum fills and intelligently employed, powerful double pedaling. The vocals flow perfectly and the mixture of the high-pitched vocoder cleans and the stark, powerful growls create an oxymoron, a unified contrast that will often pleasantly distract you from the furious instrumentation. Additionally, the lyricism is, from what I've been able to gather, of the highest order. I can't wait for a hard copy and a lyric's-laden, artful booklet.
There is a sound everywhere you listen, but it never comes off disorganized or purposeless. Everything is right where it should be. The snare and symbols fill in gaps while the bass keeps the tempo and the guitars and vocals whirl around it all; it's like watching a master painter brush out a tapestry before your eyes of the utmost precision, beauty and intent. The emotion found here (but most prominently in the wonderful soloing) is astounding and the fact that such emotion can be felt through an almost mechanically precise and well thought out method of songwriting is even more amazing. As if that weren't enough, frequent transitions from the soft to the heavy and back (some delectably jarring like in Integral Birth, others painstakingly smooth like in The Space for This and King of Those Who Know), a couple of slightly odd time-signatures (like in Adam's Murmur) and strange but enticing stop-starts and almost tribal-like beats (with a modern feel, like in The Unknown Guest and Evolutionary Sleeper) round out the sound of the album that, to me, covers virtually every sonic aspect my ears crave from the kind of music I listen to.
I liked Focus very much, but wondered what all the fuss was about. Then I thought about how it was released in 1993 and was simply far ahead of it's time in many ways. I wondered if Cynic would be able to duplicate that kind of effect in 2008 when so much has already been done. Well they didn't duplicate it. They improved upon it, and created an album whose impact is, at least to me, greater than that of Focus, and indeed is one of the all around best metal albums I've ever had the pleasure of listening to about 30 times in less than a week. The entire album is a highlight really, but if I had to narrow it down, The Space for This, Integral Birth, Adam's Murmur, and King of Those Who Know are supremely spectacular. Also, the album's opener and closer are two of the most beautiful songs I've heard and are much like succinct summaries of the sound and feel that Cynic has poured their hearts and souls into producing. Can I give this more than a 5? No? Shucks. Get this now.

| 2.5 average | soneast | September 27th 08 | This is death metal? I'm not sure how they got that label. Must be because they have a few harsh growls in a couple songs, I dunno. If they were labeled something other than death metal, I might rate it higher (a 4 most likely), but as far as death metal is concerned, it really isn't that good. Did I mention death metal enough? lol

The record is so perpendicular. Parallax vistas of superfluous begingity....

| 5.0 classic | Nehemoth | September 19th 08 | An instant classic yet again, yes you will need to listen very carefully this album just as you did with focus.
This is no the typical death metal band everybody knows, this is for sure a great act of expression, and act of magic becoming music.
The added Tim from Exivious is just a bonus.
I just love it.

| 5.0 classic | iceman3019 | November 4th 08 | There are no words that I can think of to describe this album. It is not music--Traced in Air is transcendent of such an ephemeral, petty label. It is something that you must listen to time and time again, until you can fully experience the multitude of atmospheres and emotions that it evokes.
This is art, in its purest, most beautiful, and most powerful form.

| 4.5 superb | Infernis | September 19th 08 | Incredible album and I was someone who was "eh, this is good, but why does everyone think it's so great" about Focus. The production on here is solid and the vocoder vocals sound a lot more listenable in the sense that they are no longer...Purely robotic; emotion can be felt through the singing despite it being through a vocoder.
Instrumentation is solid and the album flows very well.
Integral Birth is ridiculous!

| 4.0 excellent | OllieS | February 28th 09 | Traced In Air's greatest strength is also its greatest weakness. The album's kernel point of 'the audible recording of air' does lead to impressive layered arrangements, mind-blowing instrumentation and great diversity, but hinders the album's potential to have many things tangible on it, let alone emotion. Still, once you get past all the insane amounts of layers you should find it a very enjoyable album.

| 3.0 good | Joseph Toeben | December 15th 08 | I give this a 3 only because it does not cater to my taste of music. The idea of jazz and metal is absolutely splendid but it just does not ring my bell. The sound of Cynic is very virtual and good. My favorite was "King Of Those Who Know." Maybe if I listen to their first album Focus I may enjoy this more. Until then this stays at a 3 for me.

| 5.0 classic | Sir Grigor Domashevich | November 30th 08 | I'm going to be quite honest. I really tried to find a flaw with this album. I really did. My efforts were in vain, because simply put, there aren't any. Wonderful riffing, smooth fretless bass work, ethereal solos, calm vocals, etc. is all here. Made all the more impressive due to Cynic not being together for 14 years. This album is truly Traced in Air.

| 4.5 superb | Kit Brown CONTRIBUTOR | November 17th 08 | A perfect and highly anticipated return to form. Cynic have definitely released one of the year's finest in any genre. Yes, it's a little bit too short, but it just makes the journey all the sweeter, and easier to start all over again. Reinert has never sounded more devastating behind the kit and the vocals are a huge improvement from Focus. I couldn't be happier with this album.

| 4.5 superb | Wael | November 1st 08 | An excellent album by cynic made even more impressive by the fact that cynic have been on hiatus for over a decade. The music are complex yet very harmonic it manages to be fast paced yet contemplative . And there's an aching sense of beauty about this album that contrasts marvelously with the heavy moments of the album. The only downfall is that the album is very short, it's only 30 minutes tall. This album is a must have for any metal fan, and hopefully Cynic's next album will be the album of the decade if this album is any indication of what's to come my previous prediction will probably come true.

After a while this album gets extremely boring and I found myself constantly checking when each song would be over. After that long break I was kind of expecting much more from Cynic. Not that this album is bad because thats not the case. Just didn't meet my expectations."
Needs more constant blast beating and shrill possessed vocals.

| 5.0 classic | David James Young | November 1st 09 | Well, there's no use fighting it - Traced in Air is the best metal album of the decade. Every twist and sharp movement is an exciting joy; the shifts between the sweet vocoder harmonies and the guttural, piercing growls an initially shocking but ultimately rewarding display of versatility. Your attention seldom wanes across eight engaging, intricately-arranged works of dense modern art - "The Space for This" and "King of Those Who Know" the best examples one can provide.
This is an essential listen. No, we're not even talking genres any more. You'll be hard pressed to find a stronger, more forward-thinking and overall brilliant album from recent years.

| 4.0 excellent | Nate L. | May 9th 09 | I saw these guys play in between The Faceless and Meshuggah. Sure they're incredibly technical and proficient, but I didn't understand the appeal. I felt the vocals were either boring when whispy, or not hard enough when growled. Otherwise it was just a lot of noodling, which is cool, I guess... but not really my cup of tea. I still gave them an "excellent" because they are; I just can't break through the mass appeal.

| 4.0 excellent | travolta | March 19th 09 | This guy creates a genre of music ~15 years ago and then disappears and listens to how others follow.
This album seems like Cynic is saying "Okay, this is what we were TRYING to do way back when, now study this album for the next 15 years."
The more I listen to Traced In Air I see less and less of the genius of it, but I do see more and more over-produced, middle-aged man writing licks in his basement for an easy-to-predict populous.
4/5 because I can see how an older person might see this album.

| 4.0 excellent | red0 | November 27th 08 | Cynic's Traced in Air is the most beautifully aggressive metal album I've ever heard. A mixture of loose electronics and sweeping guitars packaged with crunching, brutal guitar work makes one of the best metal albums of all time.
Bump |
| 4.0 excellent | Mendigo | November 27th 08 | "Traced in Air" is Portishead's "Third" of Metal, but even more surprising and epic. Not many bands could return fifteen years after their last output - in this case their debut which until now has gained the status as one of the best metal albums of the 90s - with a follow-up that does neither imitate the first album nor forget about it. Instead it reinterprets the band's style and comes up with an album as fresh and powerful as you can wish for.
Like "Focus" this album also feels like an immense amount of ideas packed into as little time as possible, finally ticking in at only 35 minutes. Yet it is so full of everything you can imagine, so compacted and loaded, diverse and varied, going through the most drastic changes in seconds without feeling forced and losing its natural flow. Surprisingly this doesn't make the album harder to grasp. While there is always something left to discover, the album maintains a certain easy-going attitude unusual in Progressive Metal. The melodies are catchy, the guitar solos mindblowing and the diverse vocals do grip you and won't let you go all the way through. The only low point I can think of is a rather personal one, namely that Cynic aren't quite as jazzy anymore. But all the rest adds up to one of the greatest Metal albums of 2008.

| 4.5 superb | 0m3ga0n3 | November 22nd 08 | Holy Shit. I had noticed this all around the metal section but i was too lazy to actually listen to this. I went to "The Space For This" on Youtube and sat there enjoying the beauty of the introduction when i was suddenly blown away by the metal addition. Listening to the entire song left me in awe. So i decided i had to listen to the other songs to truly know the power of this album. then i went to "Evolutionary Sleeper." Simply uncanny. This band is mind-blowing. The softness of the vocals mix gently with the complex guitar work. The growls add a deeper feel that even furthers the greatness of their songs. Looking through the rest of the songs made me enjoy this album more and more. I had not expected what i heard but what i heard surpassed what i had expected by millions of miles. This album is amazing.
