I don't share the general enthusiasm for this album, sure it has its good moments and the band's more direct and melodic approach may appeal to the masses, but I find the songwriting too generic.

This is what has to be expected by COB: a good, solid album, definitely. But all in all, COB used to do these things already better in the past.

It should probably surprise no one that a band like Children of Bodom has had a very up and down career in the 20 years since the release of their masterpiece 'Hatebreeder' in 1999. While the band has had a steady lineup (Laiho and Warman being the key players) their sound has wavered as the band found the metal limelight after the release of Hatecrew Deathroll. There were obvious attempts to tune the sound to the masses but despite overall albums being lackluster there were always good tracks here and there and Bodom pushed forth with their signature melodic death metal sound. Here we are in 2019 and Bodom has released their best work in 16 years. It seems like Alexi has found his knack for dynamic, catchy songwriting and both Janne and Alexi have gotten back to their ways harmonizing keyboard and guitar melodies successfully. Hexed has variety from the blisteringly fast 'Kick in a Spleen' to the groovy, downtempo 'Hectate's Nightmare'. The songs are catchy and addicting. Great riffs all around, aforementioned sweet harmonies, the solos you have come to expect from Laiho and Warman and some throwback Bodom elements like the mob shouted choruses. As someone who listened to Bodom's first four albums 100s of times each it seemed like the band had chased fame a bit too much but boy is it sweet to see them back playing into their strengths once again.

It's cool that the Finns deliver solid albums up to this day, but truth is they used to do it with way more edge during their heyday/early days.

I had never given this band a listen, but Nuclear Blast was really pushing them, so I gave them a shot. I can now safely say I'm a fan.

Road 3 mellow metal almost buttrock but enjoyable; Grass & Clover 3 same as road but with more twang and a catchier chorus; Glass 2 garbo filler track; Hecate post ironically fun 4; Spleen a weak throwback to in your face but fun and too trv all the same 4; Platitudes one of the goddamn most annoying songs they've ever written with the most hashed chorus and yet i dont hate it 3; Title hashed in neoclassical stuff for the sake of the old days but it sounds good so 3 still just kind of mehleasant; Relapse is this even a track? 1.5 pure white noise, officially my lowest rated and thus worst bodom song; Never Look another garbo filler track should be the theme song for sesame street 2; Soon Departed perfect ballad only beaten by angels, perfect sense of rhythm, flow, tone, lyricism, and pathos. the only imperfection is that it suddenly ends abruptly instead of gradually fading out, same problem with tie my rope from being a completely perfect song. Knuckleduster: one of the best and most badass tracks theyve ever recorded, rawer version on the ep is better but this one still packs the soul n punch of the original 5. live bonus tracks suck, knuckle remix is archetype lolz

Their best album since AYDY, HOB comes close but this edges it on the number of competent riffs, catchy hooks, their best use of keyboards in years and great assortment of solos. Enjoyed every track on this immensely.

Good album starting right at the first second by hitting you in the face, and doesn't stop doing so until the end. It may be a little redundant but heh, it's Children of Bodom. Also, nothing to do with the music, but I'm not a fond of the cover
