I could feel my consciousness slipping away, until finally I was hovering above my own lifeless body on a hospital stretcher. I drifted through the ceiling and towards the sky, following that brilliant, tantalizing light. At the gates of heaven stood 5 Angels riffing hard. They said, "hear our song" and transitioned into this incredible breakdown. From behind the gates I could hear Jesus pounding the drums like a maniac. Thomas greeted me at the gate and as I extended my hands to show him my palms, he said "yo, shut the fuck up this is my favorite part" and the riff from 'A New Color' descended upon us. The gates of heaven blew wide open and I could see everyone in the kingdom was just rocking out, losing themselves in the bliss of this 'dream thrash'. Then I saw God, and he smiled upon me and said, "my son, check out this sick riff" and from behind him, like a great bow, he pulled out a golden guitar and went off on an insane solo, headbanging with those beautiful white tresses. I could feel tears of joy welling up in my eyes, as I saw from afar my grandfather in the mosh pit laughing and screaming, throwing fisticuffs at everyone in sight. It was pure bliss. Then I heard a loud beeping sound and could feel my soul being sucked back down into the Earth. I reached for the skies but there was nothing to latch onto. "CLEAR" yelled the doctor, and I gasped loudly as oxygen flooded my lungs. I was sent back to tell my story -- Astronoid is the way, the truth, and the light. Go and listen to it right now; for it is good.

The criticism I’ve seen of this album is that the everything starts to sound the same by the mid-point of the album, and that despite the tempos, double bass, and black metal influences, Astronoid’s second release has no balls. The first issue I don’t agree with, but the second one I do. Astronoid is absolutely the most neutered post black metal release I’ve ever heard, which is kind of crazy because it also has plenty of black metal/metal influences floating around. It’s also one of the big reasons I like it. The shoegazey ethereal vocals floating over galloping drum beats and black metal-ish leads are an awesome contrast, and it doesn’t matter that somehow they’ve managed to remove any hint of aggression from the music. It’s actually kind of impressive that they did.

Astronoid churn out consistently faithful blackgaze on this record. There isn't quite the number of standout moments that make any sort of 'gaze album stand out from the pack to me, but the general sense from this album is one simultaneously of peace and coursing energy. Astronoid could do with a bit more experimentation or variation otherwise in their next release, but this will do for now.

Astronoid is a very atmospheric and energetic take on dreamy post-metal that incorporates gaze elements. Lush and bright guitar leads are layered over a constant rhythm driven by the guitar, bass and quick drumming and almost always joined by very ethereal, melodic clean vocals. While the vocals themselves are never bad, they eventually wear their welcome and keep Astronoid from becoming anything great. The vocals are produced to sound very dreamy and they feel somewhat pushed back in the mix. The main issue is they are constant and there is never any variation, the vocalist sticks to the same style and similar melodies throughout the entire record. In general, Astronoid is samey. Most of the tracks sound like a very minor variation on each other and over 47 minutes it gets tiring especially since the best tracks are all in the beginning. Astronoid do good with atmosphere and energy but miss on songwriting and production. Better as individual tracks than an album experience.
