3.5 great | Trey STAFF | September 22nd 08 | I didn't know what this whole album sounded like for the longest time because I kept repeating the opening song. Now that I've finally let the album play through a few times it's sitting between a 3.5 and a 4. Sometimes the songs seem a bit "sterile" and "planned" (I can't explain it) but overall they're still really good. One problem is that some of the choruses seem to come from nowhere and kind of lower the overall quality of a song a little bit.
There is very little in the way of "Metallica Rip-Off" on this album and they sure as hell don't have any relation to Bullet for My Valentine (they're horrible). Matt does use all his different vocal styles, but they've become stronger than on previous albums, but really it is just going to depend on whether you liked his vocals before or not...
although the thrash vocals aren't really emulating James Hetfield anymore so that is nice. I do seem to hear a little bit of Nevermore influence though, especially in the solo sections, but it's tasteful and enjoyable.

0.0 | Athom EMERITUS | September 22nd 08 | For the last 5 years Trivium have been nothing more than the sum of their influences, and with Shogun they have finally created an album that feels like it is the band's own work. Unfortunately, while Shogun finally sees the band establishing their own identity, there just isnt enough that sticks out to make me want to listen to it again. The band is still young, so only time will tell if they will ever release an album that lives up to their potential, but at least they are on the right track.

2.0 poor | Iluvatar | September 24th 08 | Trivium go from being a wannabe thrash outfit back to a psuedo metalcore band, and improve on their last horrific outing by making a bad album that is at least listenable. Good riffs abound with little else to call "good" here.

0.0 | bastard | September 21st 08 | I almost cried when I saw the average rating for Shogun was higher than it was for Ascendancy. Shogun, simply put, is the incredibly bland mixture of the Metallica rip off album The Crusade and the over wanked piece of metalcore crap Ascendancy, all of which combined equals an over wanking group of Bullet For My Valentine rip offs. The riffs show potential, but as usual with Trivium, are quite stale and thrasy, and while solos show off some skill, but are rushed and are merely average for the genre they belong to. The rest is pure crap, as Matt Heafy uses all of his terrible vocal techniques, yelling, hoarse screaming, high pitched cleans, and Hetfield-esqe harsh cleans. The fact is, Shogun maybe the worst metal album of the year, displaying stale riffs and a mediocre group of musicians ripping off Metallica and becoming the shadow of their former selfs. Only get this if you are truly a Metallica/Trivium/BFMV fanboy, otherwise, avoid this like bird flu.

3.0 good | Thor | October 30th 08 | Trivium learn a lot from their past mistakes and come back with a (mostly) solid album. The first five songs and the title track are easily the strongest material Heafy & Co. have ever written, though the remainder of the album drags, and Matt Heafy's harsh vocals are just as grating as ever. Over an hour of Trivium is simply too much for all but the most loyal of fans. While I'm still not totally convinced that this band is as great as some would have you believe, I'm starting to see a bit of light. Everyone should at least check out "Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis", it's one of the twenty best metal songs of the year.

5.0 classic | Crimson Death | March 7th 10 | Incredible guitar riffs throughout, some of the most memorable solos I've heard, amazing drumming/double bass, aggressive screams, powerful rough vocals and catchy clean vocals. Title track is fantastic.

4.0 excellent | Poet | September 28th 08 | With the release of the poor album Ascendancy in 2005, followed by the mediocre The Crusade in 2006, I didn't have much hope for Trivium. Yeah, they were decent musicians, but something just didn't stick out. Maybe it was Matt Heafy's bland James Hetfieldesque vocals on The Crusade, or maybe it was just the uninspired feel I got from the band. Whatever it was, Trivium was just a mediocre band. Boy oh Boy has this changed with Shogun. Releasing an album where over half of the songs don't suck and are actually enjoyable is definitely a step-up. The guitar harmonies and the riffs are catchy and pretty sweet. Vocally this is a step up too, though the screams are a bit funny. The best part about this album though is easily the self titled track. A contender for song of the year, this has everything Trivium has in their arsenal. It's as brutal as mainstream metal is going to get, but it never loses its melody or catchy factor. Everything about this near 12 minute song is unbelievable. This album is definitely a surprise for 2008

Corey Beaulieu - guitar/backup vocals
Travis Smith - drums
Paolo Gregolitto - bass
Tracks
1. Kirisute Gomen (6:42): There is a lot of great, great stuff on this album, but I just can't get into this track. It has a Crusadey feel to it, and it kind of plods along until it reaches the chorus, which is really the only good part of the song. The song structure here is kind of annoying I think. Basically, intro, verse, pre-chorus, verse, pre-chorus, chorus, solo, pre-chorus, chorus, outro. I don't hate this track, but its far from the best on this album.
2. Torn Between Scylla And Charybdis (6:48): This would have been a great opening track for the album. TBSC has one of the coolest intro guitar riffs I've heard in a long time, and the two nasty guitar solos delivered up my Heafy and CB later on don't hurt either. This is the first time on the album we get to hear Heafy's clean singing voice, as opposed to his thrash and screaming vocals. I think it sounds great.
3. Down From The Sky (5:27): The subject matter for this one is nuclear war, and this is one of the heaviest tracks on the album. What stands out the most here is the guitar solo, which has some strange (but pretty cool) effects to it. I like this track a lot.
4. Into The Mouth Of Hell We March (5:52): By far my favorite track on the album. This track is an absolute pounder, and the whole band is at the top of their game on this one. The beat is very unique, and gives the song a 'different' atmosphere (but definitely not a bad one). Into The's... highlights are an unbelievable, throttling, and lengthy guitar solo, and amazing rhythm guitar work in the verses. The basslines are also superb. A plus plus.
5. Throes Of Perdition (5:54): TOP has a similar song structure to Kirisute Gomen, and because of this, it kind of drags until it hits the chorus. But once it hits that chorus, everything clicks, because the chorus, solo, and bridge are all excellent. One of the album's better tracks.
6. Insurrection (4:57): This is a low point of the album. Basically just speed drumming by Travis while Heafy puts on a lackluster vocal performance. Not much to love in the form of guitar work, either. I usually skip this track.
7. The Calamity (4:58): Another highlight of Shogun, all four members of the band put on a show in The Calamity. Heafy stands out in particular, as both the lyrics and his vocal delivery are top notch.
8. He Who Spawned The Furies (4:08): HWSTF shows us Heafy's growls for the first time on the album. Not bad at all. The whole track has kind of an ominous feel to it, which suits the lyrics (Greek mythology stuff). Some pretty decent talkbox effects in the solo.
9. Of Prometheus And The Crucifix (4:40): This track features some particularly gory lyrics (Chew my organs out/I feel it tear out my insides), and the guitars seem to have a slightly higher pitch than in other tracks. As a note, there is very little screaming in this track, the vast majority of it is clean. But other than a crazy double kick section that starts about a third of the way through, this song is fairly boring.
10. Like Callisto To A Star In Heaven (5:24): I probably defend Heafy's vocals more than pretty much everyone, but his vocals in Like Callisto... grate on me a little. Its his screaming that's the problem, a lot of the time in this track he sounds like the cookie monster. What saves this track from being a complete waste of time is the instrumentals. Travis is superb, even by his standards, and the guitars crank out a suprisingly harmonious guitar solo. For those reasons, I'll still call this a highlight of the album.
11. Shogun (11:53): The epic closer is epic. Shogun has four major 'parts', as I'll call them. The first part starts after the intro, and features the only real chorus in the song (which does a brief comeback much later on), and ends at about the 4 minute mark. The second part begins with an acoustic section with soft vocals by Heafy, then an electric guitar and drums kick in, and he repeats those vocals, and this wraps up at about 7 minutes. The third part is absolute mayhem, and I love it. Its basically a couple of double kick verses which then each explode into shredding guitar solos. This works so well, it nearly sends chills down my back. After the chorus from part one makes a brief comeback, the song wraps up with about a minute and a half of bass & drums, and Travis really kicks ass here. This song honestly feels about half of the nearly 12 minute running time. Shogun and Into The... are without a doubt the highlights of an unbelievable heavy metal album.

4.5 superb | Michael Davis | November 15th 18 | Total sucker for this album. Corey Beaulieu's guitar work is nothing short of incredible and Matt Heafy paying homage to his Japanese heritage through the lyrical theming is a very nice touch. The entire album is a highlight for me personally, but the absolute stand-out tracks are Kirisute Gomen, Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis, Down From The Sky, Throes of Perdition, Like Callisto to a Star in Heaven and Shogun.

3.0 good | Xenorazr | November 28th 17 | Trivium come so close to creating a truly great album on Shogun, but once again, they spread too thin for its own good. By the time it's over, Shogun has overstayed its welcome and makes a single listen feel overly ample.

2.0 poor | SkapalPes | January 14th 15 | Radio ShofunrYeah, it starts quite good. But after every other minute of listening I`m more and more cheesed off. This is like any average commercial pop rock band, only suited in metal dress. I mean using all of time proven principles of commercial succes, playing only what was already played, and worst of all, ever repeating refrains.rOK, there are some passages that may have a balls, it`s good instrumentally, but I just don`t like it. It is a perfect example how to make sell-out metal.

0.0 | macadoolahicky | March 26th 12 | Trivium is one of those bands you have to love and hate at the same time. While they can easily play some riffs and do some serious shredding, Trivium also proves that being talented doesn't mean that you are original. If you want something heavy and don't care about vocals, I would consider suggesting this. Otherwise, avoid it. In fact, if you ask me, avoid this band.

4.5 superb | 05McDonaldT | March 16th 11 | After the crusade, an album that can best be described as a flop, Trivium's future was
uncertain, but considering the quality of Shogun we needn't have worried. Everything that
was bad about Trivium's earlier albums is gone. Trivium have effectively grown up and
produced a mature and intelligent album that should as well as regaining the popularity they
lost after Ascendancy, give them some credibility among metal fans. The riffs are far more
creative and are catchier than those on other albums, and the songs themselves feature far
more complex and even progressive structures that make things all the more interesting.
Heafy's vocals have improved and his screams have more power and an altogether less grating
sound like on Ascendancy. His clean vocal have improved as well and he has developed a style
that can more be called his own. Bar a couple of weaker tracks in the second half Shogun is
a consistently stunning album and is easily the best of Trivium's career so far
Bump |
4.0 excellent | tom6 | October 23rd 10 | Trivium manage to create a recognizable sound they can call their own, turning their worship of Gothenburg death metal and 80's thrash into workable influences for their songwriting. This is Trivium's best album on average and the best songs in here, such as Torn Between Scylla and Charybdis and the title track, are gripping beyond anything they've done before. Still, they continue to work with a similar pattern for every song, so the dull moments are quite forgettable.

3.5 great | ShinXetsu | July 9th 10 | While this album is definitely a step in the right direction, Heafy's vocal abilities are still sub-par and the musicianship has an unsettling feeling of "been there done that" even with the standout moments factored into the equation.

3.0 good | SylentEcho | April 6th 09 | Trivium are the biggest double sellouts ever. They sold their metalcore fans out when they (supposedly) went Thrash and now they've alienated their pseudo-thrash fans again by going Thrashcore (I can't believe I said that word). We dont even know what they are right now.
Kirisute Gomen was fairly ok, they shouldn't have ripped that first part off of Opeth though and certain other parts are generic and recycled riffage again. Heafy's vocals are pretty annoying now especially the gurrtal scream sometimes just so that Corey can do them live. (The vocals in Upon The Shores are good though). He cant even go back to Metalcore because its dead. Poor Trivium.
all that aside, this album:
3/5
so not too bad in the end. Ha.

3.5 great | c0nf1n3d | February 4th 09 | The singles on this album really make the album itself. While I do like this sound of Trivium far better off than their last album, it's still not as cool as Ascendancy.

4.0 excellent | neurosisxeno | December 31st 08 | At first Shogun seemed to me like an attempt to expand on The Crusade, and was a bit of a let down. I waited a few weeks and tracks from it started popping up on my WinampiPod shuffles and then I decided to give it another shot.
The 2nd time around this album blew me away. It's somewhat of a "Missing Link" between The Crusade and Ascendancy where they take the better parts of both albums and combine them.

4.0 excellent | mastodonnn | October 8th 08 | This is a very good album. Don't let any of the Trivium haters say otherwise. I know it's not amazing, but its not bad, not one bit. Give it a chance before you voice your negative opinions. You'll find something good out of this album.

3.5 great | casket56 | October 1st 08 | Put Ascendancy and The Crusade in a blender and this is what you end up with. The album is filled with the lyrics of gore and battle ("chew my organs out") and this time lacks the love ballads (think this world cant tear us apart and dying in your arms)
An overall pleasing album but lacks some good influence that past albums featured. A little predictable with the screaming at some times but otherwise i was happy with triviums latest
