Okay so I listened to it again (see what you people are making me do to myself?) and I still maintain that this is pretty much masturbating for 58 minutes without an orgasm at the end to make it all worthwhile. I mean, sure it feels kind of good at first, but you start to feel bored after a while and then you start to get frustrated that you still haven't climaxed, and you eventually just give up in disgust and go and do better things with your time like stare at Jessica Alba's tits in Sin City.

This is "Inhuman Rampage" part deux; listening to this album is a trial by fire- and God damn it I didn't make it. That's right, I stopped mid-album. Reason: I've heard all of this before. ALL of it. There is not a riff, drum beat, melody, synth line, or bass line (or wait... was there one? Fuck it. Couldn't hear it anyway) that the 'Force hasn't already thrashed through at 5000 bpm before. This is unfortunate because these guys really are immensely talented; the riffs are nuts, the drummer is inhuman, etc.; but this all deflates quickly and gets oh so stale so quickly. If you can enjoy this, CONGRATULATIONS! I don't care. Dragonforce may have tons of talent and pwn all the n00bz lol, but they write the same song over and over and over = they're on par with musics' most songwriting-inept bands.

These guys have one major problem, and just one. They are not very much original. In any way. At all. And yeah, I'm still making an understatement. Sure, DragonForce may have the two fastest guitarists in the world, that doesn't make them GOOD. Well, it did, in fact, with their first album, which was alright, and their second, which was great. Their sound could be called refreshing even, they were a 'one of a kind' band, really. The potential was there, but where DragonForce doesn't sound like anyone else, this 4th record make them sound too much like themselves. Again. And that, frankly enough, is unforgivable. If they pull of this trick again with their next, I will be forced to give them even lower than this.

a girl at school wore a shirt with this on the cover and she doesn't even like metal but she wore the shirt and I don't know if it's just coincidence but later that day I saw her getting stuffed in a trash can by some mexican girls

Lethargy must've catched up with this power metal band hailing from England, seeing as how Ultra Beatdown does much of absolutely nothing to differentiate from the album's predecessor Inhuman Rampage. You would think DragonForce's songwriting abilities would increase tenfold, yet sadly speaking, that simply isn't the case. It's as if ZP Theart and the fantasy-driven, Drunken kung fu-slandering heroes of our time were too busy attempting to come up with retro video game sound effects and frantic guitar solos, and they couldn't put more effort into the finished product due to constraints or whatever. The success of "Through the Fire and the Flames" (and to an extent, DF's previous record itself) probably forced them to shove a dozen burning shards into their craniums while Ultra Beatdown was still in the making.

I seem to be the only one in the world who thinks this is DragonForce's best album, but I guess I love it for its excess, crazy solos and all.

Best songs are Heartbreak Armageddon, Inside The Winter StormrEvery thing else is just super wankery

One of DF's best, and it's mostly because Vadim, the keyboardist, had a hand in writing most of the songs here.

DragonForce is one of those groups who's records could have one song, and I wouldn't even notice the difference. These tracks bleed into each other, and while it may have worked on "Inhuman Rampage", It has lost it's luster and become repetitive. Not recommended.

My favourite DF album (so far). The most varied. It won't convert non-fans/haters, but for fans this should be up there with Valley Of The Damned.

Testament that I may just like the guitar a bit too much. Guilty pleasure if there ever was one.

Heroes of Our Time is the best song on the album, and possibly the best of their career. However, it's the first track. It's like eating a highly sugary treat, and then drinking soda. The soda tastes horrible after that sugary treat, and only slightly worth drinking the rest of. The album's just like that. It becomes old after a while. However, the good news is that small doses can get you to listen to it. Try Heroes of Our Time, Reasons to Live, and The Last Journey Home, and you won't need the rest of the album. That's the problem with the album, only 4 songs stick out as the best, and the rest is forgettable. Except of course Strike of a Ninja, but because of its cheesiness, not prowess.

Honestly, I don't know why this is getting the *lowest* out of all the Dragonforce albums. I see this as my favorite. It has more variation that all of the other ones. The others were really more blah.

How fortunate are we to have exceptional artists within the already joke genre 'power metal' to compare to Dragonforce? Otherwise we might all be laboring under the delusion that this is actually good. All ideas have been carried over from their debut and exhausted further; prevalent here are more keyboard loops obnoxiously juxtaposed with fast guitar picking. The lyrical concepts on Ultra Beatdown are god awful and laughable at times. They evoke a Nintendo rock sound that just does not work, and those of us out there who appreciate fantasy based music with layers of loopy keyboard effects would be better off downloading an actual video game soundtrack.

I really wanted to like this album. I bought and listened to the whole thing, tedious as it may have been. We all know DragonForce plays variations on the same very fast, very technical song over and over and over...which worked for a while because it was also a very good song. But four albums into their career, it's beginning to sound stale. These guys have the chops to create good music, as is apparent in bits and pieces here. It's time to put that ability to better use.

Inhuman Rampage part 2: even more wankery and crappy song writing than ever before! all for $10.99 at your local store!

This is a true Marmite band, and a true Marmite album. You either love or hate Dragonforce, and this album reflects that. Although not as varied as Inhuman Rampage (no power ballad this time) the songs are still fantastic. People say all the songs sound the same, and that may be true to some extent, but the songs are still varied enough to be able to recognise them from one another. The guitar work is great, the drumming (though laborious at times) is quality and the vocals are good. To enjoy the album, I would recommend the bonus version.
Top 3 songs - Heroes of our Time, Strike of the Ninja (bonus track), Reasons to Live
Bottom 3 songs - Inside the Winter Storm, The Warrior's Side, The Last Journey Home

This album gets a 5 for technical ability with the instruments and a -2 for songwriting ability. Average that to a 1.5.
|4.5 superb||SwallowARazor | August 21st 08|
It's really fun and more varied than Inhuman Rampage, but you can always tell when they've done something before on another album. But the fact that they revisit their past work just makes this more enjoyable. I don't really take them seriously as a band, they just make fun, insanely technical music.
